Face taping: What is it, why is it trending and can it really 'snatch' your face?
Music art or fashion fans will have heard of Doechii. The Grammy-winning Floridian has, in recent years, exploded onto the world stage with her signature bombastic rap style, experimental looks and visible face tape. The latter, however, has caused people to question: Why would someone tape their face? What does it do?
The reason is simple, it snatches.
'Face taping, also known as wrinkle taping, involves taping your skin into a taut position to allegedly improve the appearance of wrinkles and prevent new wrinkles from forming,' Professor Nicola Ralph, consultant dermatologist and co-founder at the Institute of Dermatologists, says.
'This concept is exactly what the name implies, where a tape or adhesive product is placed on areas where we tend to notice lines, such as the forehead, under the eye, cheeks, and décolletage. It is thought that if you hold your face in place with tape, it will prevent wrinkle formation. However, face taping is more of an immediate short-term effect rather than a long-term fix for wrinkles.'
Nicola Ralph: Face taping is more of an immediate short-term effect rather than a long-term fix for wrinkles.
The tape works by gently lifting the skin, creating a smoother, more defined contour that enhances your facial features. It's an Old Hollywood trick for achieving a sculpted look without the need for a procedure. And, in fact, Doechii is far from the only starlet to wear it.
Once a hidden makeup artist trick to create a lifted eye look, high-quality face tape – usually made of latex, silicone, or polyethene plastic – has become a regular fixture in the beauty arsenal of celebrity makeup artists. The only thing they do differently is hide it.
In fact, most choose to cover up their face tape by positioning it farther back on the sides of their face and letting their hair or wig fall over it to keep it concealed.
How do to it?
To start, choose a high-quality, hypoallergenic product designed for the skin. Clean and dry your face to ensure proper adhesion, then decide where you want to enhance or lift — common areas include the jawline, cheekbones and eyes.
Then, cut the tape into small pieces, gently peel off the backing and stick one end to the desired area, pulling the skin in the direction you want it lifted. Press the other end down and repeat on the other side.
Make sure it's taut but not overly tight, then blend makeup over it. If it feels too tight or uncomfortable, adjust as needed.
To remove, peel it off gently, being careful not to tug at the skin. Use a makeup remover to gently clean any residue.
Is it safe?
Using facial tape can be seen as relatively controversial, as most dermatologists and aestheticians agree that tapes, patches, and bandages will a) not effectively reduce, remove, or prevent wrinkles and b) potentially make them worse. Another concern? While rare, some people can have a reaction to the glue.
'People are using anything from classic Scotch tape to more advanced, reusable patches,' Dr Ralph shares.

'My preference is to use broad-spectrum sunscreen each morning, which I always recommend EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 (€59, instituteofdermatologists.ie) and a topical retinoid at night to prevent fine lines and wrinkles rather than relying on cumbersome taping of the face which for some can result in irritation or even allergic contact dermatitis depending on the tape used.'
Effective face tape alternatives
Ella & Jo's Relax & Renew Night Cream (€50, cloud10beauty.com)
Skincare: Yes, skincare has its limits, but investing in a quality skincare routine can help you reach your skin goals. Look for products that feature broad-spectrum SPF, collagen and elastin-boosting ingredients like retinol and retinoids. Sensitive skin crew can try retinol plant-alternative bakuchiol, as listed in Ella & Jo's Relax & Renew Night Cream (€50, cloud10beauty.com). Chemical exfoliating products like lactic acid, glycolic acid and hydroxy acids (i.e. AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs) are also helpful.
Injectables: Once you have your skincare regimen down, you may want to consider professional treatments, if that's your bag. Botox is tried and tested for limiting muscle contractions and preventing fine lines.
Michelle Ryan: Radiofrequency the perfect option for anyone looking for definition and lifting along the jawline with no needles and no downtime
Radiofrequency: I just recently tried Inmode Lift (€350 per treatment, 3-6 treatments required), a non-invasive Radiofrequency contouring treatment to tighten, lift and sculpt the lower face and neck. 'It uses Forma Radiofrequency to stimulate collagen and tighten and sculpt the jawline and jowls area, then the Minifx treats fatty tissue in the double chin area, and finally a lymphatic drainage massage to boost circulation and lift the jawline,' Michelle Ryan, national training manager for InMode, shares. 'This is the perfect option for anyone looking for definition and lifting along the jawline with no needles and no downtime.'

Studio Ghibli's top five films as anime giant turns 40
Japan's Oscar-winning anime house Studio Ghibli turns 40 this month. Here are the studio's top five films that have delighted fans over the decades: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985, but this post-apocalyptic story featuring a young, independent princess curious about giant insects is considered its first film. It was based on a comic-strip series that Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki wrote for a magazine targeted at anime fans. Set 1,000 years after a war that destroyed human civilisation, the story takes place in a valley protected from toxic air emitted from poisonous forests. Miyazaki won critical acclaim and a cult following for the film about Nausicaä, who discovers the forests' secrets after getting embroiled in conflicts between countries trying to revive a lethal "giant warrior". My Neighbour Totoro (1988) This beloved Ghibli classic is set in the 1950s Japanese countryside where two young sisters with a sick mother move from the city. They encounter the cuddly yet mysterious forest spirit Totoro and Catbus, a 12-legged grinning cat with a hollow body in the form of a bus - two characters who have become the Studio Ghibli mascots. The film was turned into a play for the first time by Britain's Royal Shakespeare Company in 2022. Princess Mononoke (1997) The tale of a girl raised by a wolf goddess in a forest threatened by humans was a smash hit in Japan and raised Miyazaki's profile internationally. A young prince on a journey to find a cure for his curse meets San, also known as Princess Mononoke - meaning a spirit or monster in Japanese. The prince sets out to find ways to avoid wars between destructive humans and animal gods, centred around the ultimate god - nature itself. Ghibli expert and Tufts University professor Susan Napier described Princess Mononoke to AFP as "serious, dark, and violent". Spirited Away (2001) Miyazaki won his first Oscar with this film about a girl who gets lost in a mystical world of gods and spirits where she tries to save her parents, who are turned into pigs. In order to survive, 10-year-old Chihiro is told by a mysterious boy to get a job at an enormous Japanese bathhouse run by a witch. In a story infused with Japanese beliefs and traditions, Chihiro gains confidence through her work and solves the boy's curse before rescuing her parents. The Boy and the Heron (2023) Miyazaki's second Oscar-winning film - and likely the 84-year-old's last feature - follows a boy struggling to accept his new life after his mother dies in the haunting fire-bombing of Tokyo during World War II. Everything changes when he meets a talking heron and embarks on a journey to an alternate universe, shared by the living and the dead, to find his missing stepmother. In a documentary, Miyazaki, visibly affected by the 2018 death of Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata, said the pair had had a "love-hate relationship" and that he had based the character of the grand-uncle on him.

Inside the musical Wicklow home where The Fynches grew up — now for sale for €825k
SELLING Wicklow's vastly upgraded Coningbeg Cottage as a rustic yet accessible lifestyle home, auctioneer Anna Thornton enthuses about the peaceful setting and the sweetest of seasonal birdsong. Glass act Might she mean the sound of The Fynches? They're an Irish band with deep family roots, and who are finessing their first album to be released in November in this musical home's adjacent recording studio, and in West Cork where they regularly both gig and record. Fynches front man Ferdia Walsh-Peelo and crew recorded much of their debut album (launching November 2025) at Coningbeg Cottage's studios The talented band — fronted by singer/actor Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, who was in Oscar-winning Coda, Sing Street and The Vikings — and his brother multi-instrumentalist and singer Oisín grew up at Coningbeg Cottage with two other siblings, after parents, opera singer and teacher Toni Walsh and just retired RTÉ investigative journalist and documentary maker Mick Peelo, made a lifestyle move here near Ashford and just off the M11 25 years ago. Hen party: Vastly extended, on organically tended grounds with veg beds and chicken run The couple had bought a Land Commission 1930s era cottage, which grew with them as their family also expanded to four young creatives: both generations now have had a gravitational pull to West Cork. Folks Mick and Toni are downsize home- hunting around Clonakilty, swapping the east coast for the south-west, while their offspring have worked, gigged, and lived troubadour musicians lives in and around Clonakilty. The doubled-in-size Coningbeg Cottage is now a comfortable four-bed 2,080 sq ft detached family home, with (convertable) detached music studio/multi-use additional building, on c a country acre with lofty interiors with feature timbers such as Douglas Fir, conservatory, glasshouse and organic veg gardens with large hen run (clucking fowl to rival blackbirds and Fynches?). Harmonic home of the Fynches It's guided at €825,000 by DNG Thornton who started first viewings last week, primarily to Dublin families who also want a lifestyle shift close to the capital, just off the M11 and near Rathnew, Wicklow town, and Ashford. Piano nobile... It's likely buyers will follow the Walsh-Peelo family's fledgling footsteps, 'swapping suburban Dublin for peaceful and pastoral Wicklow. Waking up on our first morning, to the sound of horses' hooves, confirmed we had made the right choice ... we continue to say it was our best decision ever,' says mum Toni 'Soprano' Walsh. While Mick commuted to Donnybrook's RTÉ studios, she gave music and singing lessons at this hub of activity, including opera lessons to internationally acclaimed Ava Dodd, while bands like Hudson-Taylor, Gabrielle Aplin, and I have a Tribe 'have also passed through to drink at the well, or swim at local beaches'. Youngest son Ferdia and Fynches frontman was born here, and apart from the band has an acting career that most recently saw him filming the forthcoming Four Letters of Love with Pierce Brosnan, Helena Bonham-Carter and Gabriel Byrne — whose career also started in Wicklow's more fictional Glenroe. Sing Street with Ferdia Walsh-Peelo Swallows of the feathered kind enhance and enrich the garden 'a place of recreation and nourishment, it's been a passion with organically grown veg plus our hens' eggs have never disappointed. Now it's a new chapter for us: needs have changed and new pastures (and, new veg patches) beckon,' Toni chimes. Strike a chord? Balancing that delicate 'selling while buying' bridge (house swap, anyone?), the Walsh-Peelo folk are actively scouring property websites as home-hunters in West Cork as their own Coningbeg Cottage is spruced up for sale, so they have fingers on the property market's pulse and beat at both ends: there could even be a ballad in it? VERDICT: A well-feathered nest that reared a brood of Fynches. What's next?
