China says ready to work with Malaysia to safeguard free trade, multilateral trading system
KUALA LUMPUR: Chinese Premier Li Qiang said Monday that China is ready to work closely with Malaysia to safeguard free trade and the multilateral trading system, and address global challenges.
Li made the remarks when meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Xinhua news agency reported.
Li also said China is ready to work with Malaysia to deepen exchanges and collaboration across various fields, and jointly usher in a new 'Golden 50 Years' for bilateral ties guided by the principles of mutual respect and trust, equality and mutual benefit for win-win outcomes.
The Chinese Premier arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Monday to attend the ASEAN-GCC (the Gulf Cooperation Council)-China Summit at the invitation of Anwar.
He was welcomed by Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing, among others, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Prior to his arrival in Malaysia, ASEAN's rotating chair, Li paid an official visit to Indonesia.

Zeekr adds Carro to its dealers network
KUALA LUMPUR: Premium new energy vehicle group Zeekr has appointed Carro to as its latest authorised dealer in Malaysia. Carro is Asia Pacific's largest online automotive marketplace and Malaysia's most trusted used car platform. In a joint statement today, both parties said the partnership plans include four new Zeekr showrooms and three Carro Care workshops to support retail and maintenance efforts. "Zeekr car owners can look forward to greater accessibility and convenience within the electric vehicle (EV) sector in the long run, as they look forward to the standard dealer warranty. "They can also have plus access to a full suite of end-to-end Carro services, including financing, aftersales and insurance services with Genie financial services, Carro Care and Coverro respectively," it said. Zeekr Southeast Asia managing director Alrx Bao said the positive response it had received from the Malaysian market over the past few months reflects the growing appreciation for Zeekr's premium electric vehicles. Bao said the momentum reinforces its commitment to expand the company's presence in Malaysia. "The partnership with Carro represents a significant milestone in that direction, enhancing both our sales network and after-sales capabilities to better support our customers. "This collaboration also aligns with our broader business strategy as we prepare for the introduction of our next important model, the Zeekr 7X," he said. Carro chief executive officer of international marketplace Fong Hon Sum said this is a really exciting step for the company as it offers even more automotive options to its customers in Malaysia. Fong said the company is seeing a growing market in Malaysia for hybrid and electric vehicles, with developing infrastructure and tax exemptions in place. "We are ready to provide these services to Malaysians who are keen to make the switch to EVs. "Our expertise within the EV sector has us well-placed to handle inspections, repairs, and maintenance, and we're so excited to have Zeekr as our partner," he added. There are currently three showrooms, known as Zeekr Space, in Petaling Jaya and IOI Mall Puchong.

Palm gains higher on Chicago's soyoil, crude oil rally
JAKARTA: Malaysian palm oil futures rose for the third straight session on Monday, tracking gains in Chicago soyoil after the US proposed increasing biofuels blending, and supported by the crude oil rally following tensions in the Middle East. The benchmark palm oil contract for September delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained RM156, or 3.98 per cent, to RM4,078 (US$961.79) a metric ton by the midday break. US President Donald Trump's administration on Friday proposed increasing the amount of biofuels that oil refiners must blend into the nation's fuel mix over the next two years, driven by a surge in biomass-based diesel mandates, pushing soyoil prices higher. "The broader edible oils market tracked gains in crude oil, as investors reacted to heightened risks of conflict between Israel and Iran. Supply disruption fears lead to heightened risk premiums," said Darren Lim, commodities strategist at Singapore-based brokerage Phillip Nova. The push in higher energy prices increases both palm oil production costs and potential demand for biofuels. In essence, the biofuel sector acts as an alternative energy source to crude oil-derived fuels, he added. Soyoil on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) gained 4.51 per cent. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract was up 2.57 per cent, while its palm oil contract rose 3.76 per cent. Palm oil tracks the price movements of rival edible oils as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Oil prices were volatile on Monday after surging seven per cent on Friday, as renewed strikes by Israel and Iran over the weekend increased concerns that the battle could widen across the region and significantly disrupt oil exports from the Middle East. Stronger crude oil futures make palm oil a more attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. Exports of Malaysian palm oil products for June 1–15 rose 26.30 per cent to 662,580 metric tons from 524,596 metric tons shipped during May 1–15, cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services said on Sunday. Palm oil still targets the RM3,962 (US$933.33) to RM3,998 range, as it has almost broken resistance at RM3,927 per metric ton, according to Reuters' technical analyst Wang Tao.

High Court grants Muhyiddin's request to transfer case
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has granted Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's application to transfer his power abuse and money laundering case from the Sessions Court to the High Court. Justice Muhammad Jamil Hussin made the decision after hearing submissions from both parties on Monday (June 16). "I have deliberated on the submissions. The applicant has met the threshold for his case to be transferred and tried at the High Court under Section 417(1)(b) of the Criminal Procedure Code. "The three legal questions raised by the charges are extraordinarily difficult," he said. Justice Muhammad Jamil expressed confidence in the Sessions Court judge's expertise but felt it was "more expedient" for the High Court to determine the legal questions. "I hereby allow the application," the judge said. The court set July 14 for case management at the High Court. In the application filed on April 4, Muhyiddin cited complex legal issues and questions of unusual difficulty, particularly regarding the constitutionality of several provisions in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009. According to the Bersatu president, the case is of public interest, attracting significant media coverage both domestically and internationally, and allowing the application would not prejudice the prosecution. On April 27, 2023, Muhyiddin filed an application to transfer the case, but he withdrew it on July 10 of the same year. In May, Muhyiddin submitted a second application for transfer. Muhyiddin, 77, was charged with four counts of using his position to obtain bribes totalling RM232.5mil in connection with the Jana Wibawa Project from Bukhary Equity Sdn Bhd, Nepturis Sdn Bhd, Mamfor Sdn Bhd, and Datuk Azman Yusoff for the party. He allegedly committed the offence at the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya between March 1, 2020, and August 20, 2021. Muhyiddin also faces three charges of receiving RM200mil from illegal activities, deposited into Bersatu's AmBank and CIMB Bank accounts. The offences were allegedly committed at AmBank, Amcorp Mall branch, Petaling Jaya on January 7, 2022, and at CIMB Bank, Menara KL Branch, Jalan Stesen Sentral between February 25 and July 16, 2021, and February 8 and July 8, 2022. Muhyiddin's lawyer Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik and Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin appeared in the proceedings.
