Offer to 'share expertise' over station upgrade
Railway bosses say they are willing to share their expertise on historical coal mining beneath a station in Staffordshire to enable improvement works to move forward.
It comes after a row between the local MP and leader of the borough council over the planned work at Kidsgrove Railway Station.
Bosses at Network Rail said the previous scheme was hampered due to poor underground conditions caused by uncharted mine workings.
The current project is now at an impasse while funding for exploratory works is being argued over by the politicians.
Council leader Simon Tagg recently called on MP David Williams to ensure funding was still in place for the plans - which include parking for 200 cars and a new transport interchange - but said he had not received a direct response.
The MP had claimed Tagg was attempting to deflect responsibility on the issue.
He said Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council had failed to properly budget for the scheme, having been previously aware of historic coal mining in the vicinity of the station.
"It is regrettable that they now resort to finger-pointing rather than putting forward a serious solution," Mr Williams said.
Tagg also claimed bosses at Network Rail, which owns and manages most of the railway infrastructure in Great Britain, were blocking the scheme.
They had demanded a fully funded restoration plan prior to giving the go-ahead for the work to begin, he said.
Tagg added that he felt this was unrealistic, as Kidsgrove Town Deal Board, which is overseeing the scheme, would not be able to predict costings until the work had begun.
Network Rail bosses said they had previously faced historic mining issues in the area.
"During our work to build new lifts to make Kidsgrove station accessible for all, the multi-million-pound project was hampered by poor underground conditions caused by previously unknown historic mine workings," they said.
"Having overcome those challenges, we are now offering our knowledge and expertise on what lies beneath the station for a separate council-led scheme to build a new car park and expansion of the station facilities on the site.
"Due to risks from previous coal mine shafts, additional ground investigation is needed before improvements can safely begin, which our colleagues at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council are leading on."

Translink moves some bus services to Grand Central Station
Translink has announced bus services from Downpatrick, Newcastle and Ballynahinch will operate from Belfast Grand Central Station from July. The move aligns with the launch of Translink's summer timetable and aims to enhance passenger convenience and connectivity, it said. The changes will see Goldliner coach and Ulsterbus services, including routes 215, 515 and 516 to Downpatrick; 237 and 520 to Newcastle; and the 652 to Ballynahinch via Cairnshill Park and Ride and Carryduff, all depart from Belfast from 1 July. It is part of Translink's ongoing transition to the £340m public transport hub in the centre of Belfast, which opened last September. "We are pleased that our services will now offer customers greater convenience, access to modern facilities, and better connections to other bus, rail, cross-border and airport services," he said. Mr Woods also confirmed that while Grand Central Station will be the main departure point, Adelaide Street will remain an outbound stop. On return journeys, buses will revert to their previous city centre set-down stop at Bedford Street before completing their routes at Grand Central. In addition, Translink will introduce a new express service, which will provide a faster, direct evening peak journey to Newcastle via the M1 bus lanes through Ballynahinch. Changes will also affect the Metro network, with Metro 8 services relocating to their former stop at Donegall Square East from Howard Street, while continuing to travel via Great Victoria Street and Wellington Place. Executive bonuses banned at six UK water companies over pollution
Six UK water companies were banned Friday from paying bonuses to senior executives, which the government said would be inappropriate given their failure to clean up their massive sewage discharges. The new measures, whose targets include the country's biggest supplier, financially troubled Thames Water, prohibit the companies from paying bonuses "to water bosses that oversee poor environmental and customer outcomes", the government announced in a statement. Suffering from underinvestment in a sewer system that dates largely back to the Victorian era, UK water companies, privatised since 1989, have been under fire for several years due to the discharge of significant quantities of sewage into rivers and the sea. Despite this, "water companies have awarded over £112 million ($152 million) in bonuses and incentives over the last decade," the government noted. These executives "should only get bonuses if they've performed well, certainly not if they've failed to tackle water pollution", said environment minister Steve Reed. The Labour government, which came to power in July, has promised to reform a sector "in crisis" and has already legislated to toughen penalties for water company bosses who fail to comply with the law. Water regulator Ofwat last week imposed a record fine of £123 million on London supplier Thames Water, which serves 16 million customers, for repeated sewage spills. Some £18.2 million of the fines related to "unjustified" payouts of dividends. The firm is seeking a private buyer to avoid a state bailout. US investment fund KKR pulled out of a potential deal on Tuesday. Yorkshire Water, Anglian Water, Wessex Water, United Utilities and Southern Water were also hit with the bonus ban.
