Saudi Arabia's Art Bridges unveils programmes in Scotland, Japan, South Korea and Spain
The 2025/2026 round of the initiative will take place across four programmes.
The first, in collaboration with the British Council Scotland, will take place between September 22 and 27.
While the trip to Scotland was nomination-based and already closed, the other programmes in the initiative are open to applications, with each of them is designed to reflect upon specific geographical and cultural contexts.
In Japan, running between October 31 and November 7, the programme will study how creatives respond to natural, urban and traditional environments. The itinerary in South Korea, taking place between November 19 and 27, will examine the impact of grass roots cultural movements. Finally, the programme in Spain, which will be held between March 2 and 9, will look into how collective practice emerges in contemporary and historic cultural spaces.
In each programme, participants will visit cultural centres and artist studios. They will take part in workshops and discussions with prominent figures from the local art scene.
Dina Amin, chief executive of the Visual Arts Commission, said the Art Bridges initiative is designed to foster cross-cultural exchange and highlight the kingdom's artistic potential internationally.
'These professional programmes offer Saudi and Saudi-based cultural practitioners a unique opportunity to share their creative voices with the world, reflecting the depth and diversity of Saudi Arabia's artistic landscape,' she said.
Those interested in applying should be at least 21 years of age. They should have a minimum of five years' experience in their respective fields and submit a portfolio that showcases their cultural contributions. Proficiency in English and a full commitment to itineraries is also mandatory.
The deadline to apply for the Japan programme is August 21, whereas the application window for the other two trips closes at the end of the month.

After Qatar Airways, Saudia, Saudi Arabia's flag carrier airline, could become the next Middle East airline to install SpaceX's Starlink internet service. According to a Bloomberg report, the Elon Musk-owned company is in advanced talks with Saudia to equip its fleet of more than 140 aircraft with its high-speed onboard wifi, according to people familiar with the talks. A deal with Saudia would give SpaceX a foothold in the Gulf's biggest economy, at a time when local rival Neo Space Group, owned by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, is working on establishing its own satellite-based in-flight service. Rossen Dimitrov, the Saudia chief guest experience officer who previously worked at Qatar Airways, wrote on LinkedIn that he recently visited the SpaceX industrial complex in Texas to learn 'about the exciting future they are bringing to aviation'. SpaceX markets its Starlink service to airlines through a subscription model similar to its consumer offering. Airlines face upfront hardware costs that amount to anywhere between US$300,000 and US$500,000, depending on the aircraft, in addition to a monthly fee for every seat, according to a document seen by Bloomberg News. Saudi's new airline Riyadh Air, set to start commercial operations by the end of the year, has partnered with Viasat. The report added that because Starlink isn't authorised for use in the UAE, any deal with the Emirates or flydubai would likely require a reversal of that policy. Earlier this year, Qatar Airways became the first carrier in the region to offer the service. The airline made Starlink available across the cabin of its Boeing 777 models, and the company has started retrofitting its Airbus A350 jets, with the 787 Dreamliners up next.

Saudi: SFDA publishes guidelines for travelers to obtain clearance permit for controlled drugs
RIYADH — The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has outlined the procedures for obtaining a clearance permit for controlled drugs containing narcotics and psychotropic substances in the possession of passengers arriving in or departing from Saudi Arabia. This reinforces SFDA's commitment to facilitating patients' travel and ensuring a smoother journey while maintaining safety standards. SFDA confirms that all information related to controlled drug permits is available through its Controlled Drug System (CDS) at Travelers can now easily apply for a permit through the CDS platform by creating a personal account, submitting an electronic clearance permit request with the patient's details and trip information, and uploading supporting documents like a prescription, medical report, and proof of identity. Travelers can also add multiple medications by providing accurate details, including the trade name, active ingredient, drug concentration, dosage form, and quantity or pack size. Applicants must include documents that prove the medical need for the medication, whether it is for the traveler or another patient. The applicant must agree to the terms and conditions, and then submit the application. Travelers can also track the status of the application, which is clearly classified as "Submitted," "Completed," "Rejected," or "Incomplete." The applicant can take the printout of the permit once the application is completed.
