Wisconsin women's basketball adds standout transfer forward, second addition of offseason
Wisconsin women's basketball made its second splash of the 2025 offseason on Tuesday.
Roughly one week after Wisconsin added its first transfer addition in former NC State guard Laci Steele, the team has bolstered its frontcourt with a much-needed addition. Recently hired head coach Robin Pingeton landed a commitment from former Southern Illinois forward Gift Uchenna, the first signature splash of her tenure in Madison.
While Steele boasts an impressive high school resume -- 2023 Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year and Edmond-North High School's all-time scoring record -- she averaged just 1.7 points and 0.9 rebounds in limited minutes as a sophomore at NC State.
Uchenna, meanwhile, dominated at Southern Illinois in her first season of collegiate action. The Ebonyi State, Nigeria, native averaged 14.5 points, 12.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in 28.7 minutes per game. Her 12.8 rebounds were the second-most by any player in NCAA Division I, trailing only LSU star forward Aneesah Morrow.
Uchenna's rebounding talent is undeniable. She snared at least 15 boards in nine games last season, including a 21-rebound performance against Valparaiso on Dec. 29. She also collected 21 double-doubles during her tenure with the Salukis, highlighted by a 34-point, 17-rebound performance against IU Indianapolis in mid-November.
While Wisconsin will have a tough time replacing star forward Serah Williams, Uchenna could partially fill the void created by her departure.
Wisconsin now rosters eight players as of April 15. Four of those eight were true freshmen a season ago and saw limited playing time in the rotation. While Pingeton's task in transforming Wisconsin's program will take time, her first frontcourt transfer addition was key with both Williams and standout center Carter McCray gone to the portal.
The Badgers went 13-17 a season ago, a regression from their 15-17 output and WNIT appearance during the 2023-24 season. The team also went 4-14 in Big Ten play, barely securing a bid to the 2025 Big Ten Tournament. Pingeton's pedigree at Missouri immediately provides UW with an experienced presence on the sidelines. However, the Badgers' new staff has considerable work left as the program faces a top-down rebuild.
Uchenna's addition is a strong starting point. Her ability to translate her level of play to a challenging Big Ten Conference remains to be seen, but the potential is clear.

How Wisconsin great Braelon Allen performed in New York Jets' preseason win over Giants
Former Wisconsin running back Braelon Allen delivered a strong performance in the New York Jets' preseason loss to the New York Giants on Saturday. Allen took seven carries for 34 yards (4.9 yards per carry) in the 31-12 defeat. Just like in the team's preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers, Allen was more efficient than starter Breece Hall, who rushed for just 26 yards on seven carries. Allen now has 67 rushing yards on 15 carries through two preseason contests, compared to Hall's 35 yards on 10 carries. The former Wisconsin great is unlikely to claim the full-time workload when the 2025 season kicks off, both due to Hall's talent as a pass-catcher and his status as a second-round draft selection. But it's hard to ignore Allen's current trajectory. At the least, he is showing enough production and consistency to begin to carve into Hall's workload. None should be surprised if Allen improves on his 92-carry, 334-yard, two-touchdown rookie season in 2024. He is currently a popular pick for a sophomore breakout, especially as the Jets work to establish an identity under new head coach Aaron Glenn. Is Caitlin Clark playing today? Indiana Fever star's injury status vs. Connecticut Sun
Indiana Fever point guard Caitlin Clark is set to miss her 13th straight regular season game on Sunday as she continues to recuperate a right groin injury. Clark was officially ruled out by the Fever as Indiana (18-16) travels to Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday to take on the Connecticut Sun (6-26). It's now the 22nd regular season game that Clark has missed this season and the 23rd game overall, including the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final. Fever head coach Stephanie White provided an update on Monday of last week, revealing to reporters that Clark had not yet returned to practice. "No return to practice. She's been able to get a little bit more in her full-court running with all of her body weight. It's really building up from doing minimal to then building some endurance to do longer periods of time. She's been able to do a little bit more on the court in terms of how she moves, but not into practice yet," White said. ESPN broadcaster Ryan Ruocco said during last Tuesday's Fever loss against the Dallas Wings that coach White was hopeful Clark could return to practice this coming week. Ruocco shared some potential Clark return dates, too. "Indiana will play Washington on Friday at home. Then, at Connecticut, who has the worst record in the league, on Sunday. Then, they have a week off before playing Minnesota twice, home Seattle ... "Now, that stretch where they have the week off is where Stephanie White reiterated to us today she's hoping Caitlin Clark returns to practice. Stephanie talked yesterday about how Caitlin has been running more, doing more on-court work. She is hoping that Caitlin returns to practice next week, would need multiple days of practice before she then gets into a game, but you see the way the schedule stacks up after that week and wonder could one of those games against Minnesota or maybe the 26th at home against Seattle be a potential return game," Ruocco said. Fans last saw Clark on the court more than a month ago when she exited in the final minute of the Fever's 85-77 July 15 win over the Sun. Clark missed five regular season games from May 28-June 10 with a left quadriceps injury. Clark missed four more regular season games and the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final with a left groin injury from June 26-July 5. The 6-foot guard also missed the Fever's preseason opener with a left leg injury. Prior to her absences this season, Clark had played in 185 straight games across her college career at Iowa and the start of her WNBA career with the Fever. Limited to 13 games this season, Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game on 36.7% field-goal shooting and 27.9% 3-point accuracy.
