Teddy Bridgewater set to return to the NFL with the Buccaneers to back up Baker Mayfield
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Teddy Bridgewater is nearing a return to the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said Bridgewater is visiting the team and the Bucs plan to sign him. The Buccaneers will be the eighth team in 12 seasons for the 32-year-old Bridgewater. Bridgewater coached his former high school in Miami to a Class 3A state championship last fall and then returned to the NFL in late December to serve as a backup to Jared Goff for the playoff-bound Lions. He would provide insurance for the four-time defending NFC South champions behind Baker Mayfield. The Buccaneers also have veteran Kyle Trask, who has thrown 11 passes in four seasons since he was a second-round pick in 2021. Mayfield returned to practice Tuesday after missing a couple of days because of a hand contusion. Bridgewater said last month that he was suspended from coaching Miami Northwestern High School because he provided players with financial benefits that he says he reported to the school. 'I'm not going anywhere,' Bridgewater said on social media post. 'And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.' Bridgewater, a first-round pick by Minnesota in 2014, is 33-32 as a starter and made the Pro Bowl after his second season when he led the Vikings to an 11-5 record. He also spent time with the Jets, Saints, Panthers, Broncos and Dolphins. Bridgewater has completed 66.4% of his passes for 15,120 yards, 75 touchdowns, 47 interceptions and a 90.5 passer rating. Buccaneers offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard was an assistant coach in Miami in 2022 when Bridgewater backed up Tua Tagovailoa. Buccaneers defensive line coach Charlie Strong was Bridgewater's head coach at Louisville. Tampa Bay's quarterback room also includes Michael Pratt and Connor Bazelak. Pratt, a seventh-round pick out of Tulane by Green Bay in 2024 who signed to the Buccaneers' practice squad last August, has been sidelined by a back injury. Bazelak signed as an undrafted free agent out of Bowling Green where he spent the final two of his six college seasons. ___ AP NFL: Rob Maaddi, The Associated Press

Panthers rookie has sensational performance at Tuesday's practice
A hidden gem of the Carolina Panthers' 2025 draft class may not be hidden for much longer. Safety Lathan Ransom put his stamp all over Tuesday's rainy outing of training camp. The rookie defensive back not only picked off starting quarterback Bryce Young, but also punctuated the workout with a sack of third-stringer Jack Plummer on the last play of 11-on-11 drills. Head coach Dave Canales talked about Ransom's sparkling performance after the final whistle. "Just being where he's supposed to be," Canales said of Ransom, whom the Panthers selected in the fourth round of the 2025 draft. "I think one thing that I'm noticing about him is he always seems to be in great position to make a play. And that comes with study, that comes with being disciplined about owning your leverage, analyzing the formation, run-pass and then putting yourselves in an athletic position to make plays. And I couldn't be happier with where he's at and where he's headed." Ransom showed that discipline and preparation during his impressive collegiate career at Ohio State University. There, as a three-year starter and national champion, the six-foot, 206-pounder amassed 227 combined tackles, three interceptions, 3.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. Reporters also got a chance to talk to Ransom this afternoon, and he credited his standout session to the vibes from his teammates. "Yeah, I think the [defensive backs] brought a lot of energy today—between Jaycee [Horn], Mike [Jackson], Demani [Richardson], Tre [Swilling], all them, Nick [Scott]," Ransom said. "Lettin' us know that it don't matter if it's raining or snowing, we gotta go out there and show up." The 23-year-old is in the mix for the starting job next to fellow safety Tre'von Moehrig, who signed a three-year, $51 million deal out of free article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers S Lathan Ransom has sensational outing at Tuesday's practice

Lions 2025 first-round pick Tyleik Williams turns in best practice of training camp
Lions 2025 first-round pick Tyleik Williams turns in best practice of training camp originally appeared on The Sporting News With Alim McNeill out until at least October, the Detroit Lions will be relying on Tyleik Williams to be an impactful player immediately in his rookie campaign. The 2025 No.28 overall pick is starting on Detroit's defensive line along with D.J. Reader on the interior, and the rookie turned in his best day of practice on Monday. According to Tim Twentyman of Williams tallied two sacks during team periods on Monday and also showcased his power in the pass rushing department and run game. "Tyleik Williams had his best practice of training camp Monday night," Twentyman wrote. "Williams recorded two sacks on quarterback Jared Goff in team periods and made a number of other nice plays in the run game. His sacks were on bull rushes, pushing veteran center Graham Glasgow and left guard Christian Mahogany right back into Goff." "Williams' power was on full display on the sacks, but he's also showed off nimble feet for a 330-pound man. He's got great initial quickness to cross the face of defenders and knock them off balance and then let his power and push take over. He plays a lot on the other side of the line of scrimmage." During his four-year college career at Ohio State, Williams wasn't known for posting prolific sack numbers. The 22-year-old posted just 11.5 sacks in his career with the Buckeyes and was more known for his stout run defense. However, it looks like Williams is improving as a pass rusher at Lions' camp, and is showcasing why he will likely be a Day 1 starter on Detroit's defensive line. Williams didn't play in the Hall of Fame game versus the Los Angeles Chargers last Thursday. However, we should see him in action for the first time on Friday as the Lions travel to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to square off against the Atlanta Falcons.
