Cork hurling duo start as Barrs find feet after slow start
St Finbarr's recovered from a slow start to see off Clonakilty in the McCarthy Insurance Group Premier SFC clash in Bandon on Saturday evening.
After winning the Division 1 league trophy at the start of the month against the Brewery Town, the city outfit navigated another battle, but this was the real stuff in the opening game in Group 2.
Brian Roche's charges recovered from a slow start to prevail here in what was a team performance that underlined St Finbarr's quality.
Starman Steven Sherlock did kick 0-6 (0-1 f, 0-1 45), but he was overall well marshalled by Maurice Shanley. William Buckley popped up with three sweet points while there were also big displays from the likes of Billy Hennessy, Alan O'Connor and Jamie Burns in defence.
Cork hurlers Brian Hayes and Ethan Twomey both started here having been named as subs on the programme.
It's another case of fine margins going against Clonakilty in Bandon, as they now have to regroup.
Twomey was involved from the off when he was involved in a great Barrs move that also involved Conor Dennehy and Ian Maguire, but the latter's well struck effort from close range was expertly saved by Clonakilty goalkeeper Mark White.

The stop proved crucial, as the Brewery Town pointed from an acute angle through Ross Mannix and goaled after three minutes when Conor Daly finished to the net after St Finbarr's failed to clear their lines.
St Finbarr's had the lion's share of possession, but were struggling to penetrate a resolute Clon defence.
Buckley did fist over a point after five minutes, but it was a frustrating opening for them. A pair of frees through Conor Dennehy and Sherlock did leave a point in it after 12 minutes, as they were slowly finding their feet.
Hayes could only find the side netting in what was a great opportunity for the Barrs of a goal, but they did draw parity when Buckley landed his second, 0-4 to 1-1 after the first quarter.
A trademark Sherlock 45 handed his team the advantage for the first time, but it was short lived. In a game that ebbed and flowed, three successive white flags from the Brewery Town gave them a two-point buffer. David Lowney, Seán White and Darragh Gough with the scores.
Daly could and should have scored Clonakilty's second goal after 28 minutes, but it was a nice height for the St Finbarr's netminder Darragh Newman. A minute later, the Barrs got the green flag they were craving when Conor Dennehy finished smartly into the bottom corner of the net, the Togher outfit back ahead, 1-5 to 1-4.
In keeping with an opening 30 minutes where both defences were on top, Daly did draw Clon level, 1-5 each at half-time.
On the resumption, it was a case of wayward shooting on both sides, until Seán White nudged the West Cork team in front five minutes into the new half.
The sides then traded points with the game firmly on a knife-edge with Clon having their noses in front by the bare minimum.
St Finbarr's did land two of the next three points with Sherlock kicking two frees to draw level at 1-8 apiece after 43 minutes.
A Buckley effort and another Sherlock free opened up a two-point lead for the Barrs as they were now very much enjoying a purple patch. Further points from sub Fionn Crowley and Sherlock from play gave their side their biggest advantage so far, 1-12 to 1-8 after 52 minutes.
A Gough free and a two-point free from Dara Ó Sé left Clonakilty just a point adrift with five minutes to go.
A couple of Sherlock two-point efforts from frees drifted wide, as their opposition remained in the game going into added time.
The sides traded points with the Barrs 1-13 to 1-12 ahead. Luke Griffin did have a chance to level it, but it dropped short.

Routine win for Rockies against under-par Barrs
Blackrock 2-25 St Finbarr's 2-14 Blackrock have one foot in the knockout stage of the Co-Op Superstores Cork Premier SHC following a relatively straightforward victory over St Finbarr's at Páirc Uí Rinn on Friday night. In this latest instalment between these two great city rivals, it was a disappointing display by St Finbarr's, who were surprisingly flat for long spells. Only for three superb saves by their goalkeeper Shane Hurley, the margin could have been greater. The Togher club didn't get into the game until late in the second quarter, and having trailed by 11 points at one juncture, went to the dressing-room seven points behind. The eventual difference was 11 points. Eleven was also the number of scorers for the Rockies, in comparison with six for St Finbarr's. Jamie Harrington's side caught fire from the off, and they were the much better side overall. The groundwork for success came in the opening eight minutes when they posted five unanswered points with Kevin O'Keeffe, captain John Cashman, Alan Connolly (free), Niall Cashman and Robbie Cotter arrowing over from different positions. Niall Cashman's effort in the seventh minute came from a stray St Finbarr's pass, while Cotter's was at the end of a swift move that was started by Tadhg Deasy and Stephen Murphy in defence. Both scores highlighted St Finbarr's inability to settle. Their opening point came from Jack Cahalane in the ninth minute. The score was 0-6 to 0-2 before Daniel Meaney got in for a Blackrock goal in the 12th minute but the hard work was done out the field by Deasy who soloed through and his shot was saved by a diving Hurley, and Meaney was in the right place at the right time. After a one-sided 20 minutes, where the Rockies defenders were also in control, they led 1-11 to 0-3. St Finbarr's, who were beaten by these same opponents in last season's championship, made somewhat of a recovery before the break when Ben Cunningham blasted to the net in the 27th minute - the badly needed score came after a five-man move. The interval lead was 1-13 to 1-6. Ben Cunningham was the main contributor for the Barrs (ended with 2-9) and his three frees cut the gap, but Blackrock found another gear. Alan Connolly's fifth point to put them eight clear demonstrated their greater hunger. Ger Cunningham brought in Brian Hayes (hampered by injury) midway through the half, but it was Blackrock who kept piling on the pressure. A second top-class save came from Hurley, this time denying Ryan Sweeney. However, he couldn't prevent Michael O'Halloran's bullet in the 47th minute, 2-18 to 1-10. An 11-point difference once more. Sub Peter Linehan, just on the field, pushed the advantage to 14 points. After Cunningham hit the post with a goal-shot, Hayes won a penalty and Cunningham made no mistake with the finish in the 53rd minute. The same player made it a seven-point game entering the final few minutes. There was no let up from Blackrock, shooting the closing four points. Sub Fionn Coleman marked his return from injury with one, while Niall Cashman capped a good evening's work with the final two white flags. Kanturk and Douglas meet on Saturday - both of these teams are without points. The round three pairings are Blackrock against Douglas, while St Finbarr's will take on Kanturk. Blackrock v Barrs derby kickstarts pivotal weekend in Cork Premier SHC
This weekend is make or break for a number of clubs in the Co-Op Superstores Cork Premier SHC. Some eagerly anticipated ties await and for the teams that secured opening day wins - Sarsfields, Charleville, Blackrock, Midleton, Glen Rovers and St Finbarr's - they will try and carry that momentum into the next round, safe in the knowledge that they have already delivered. Come Sunday evening, there will be a clearer picture. Of the six games to be decided, there are three standout derby clashes including Blackrock v St Finbarr's who get proceedings underway. The clash is certain to attract a huge crowd to Páirc Uí Rinn this evening at 7.30pm. In this all-city clash, both sides are in a positive state following their respective victories over Kanturk and Douglas. Ger Cunningham's charges were boosted by the return of their five Cork players (albeit minus the injured Brian Hayes) and recorded a nine-point triumph over Douglas. The Barrs are champions from three years ago, when incidentally they got the better of the Rockies. They've come off an up-and-down campaign, but they kick-started this year on an optimistic note with Ben Cunningham, Jack Cahalane and William Buckley top in the scoring charts. Jamie Harrington's Blackrock edged past the Barrs last summer thanks to a late Robbie Cotter goal. And it was a Michael O'Halloran goal that helped the champions of 2020 past Kanturk a fortnight ago, while Alan Connolly accounted for five points. Large crowds are expected at the Boreenmanna Road venue again tomorrow when it will host a double header, the second of which involves Erin's Own and county final runners-up and titleholders from the previous year Sarsfields (7pm) - another pairing that is sure to whet the appetite. These near neighbours need no introduction. The Glounthaune club is among six teams that kicked off their season with a disappointing defeat. Together with Fr O'Neill's, Newcestown, Kanturk, Douglas and Newtownshandrum, they seek a favourable result to keep their championship hopes on track. New manager Shay Bowen, who recently retired as their number one goalkeeper after over two decades of incredible service with Erin's Own, is at the helm. His team is in a period of transition, but he will be heartened by their strong finish against Glen Rovers. Goalscorer Finn O'Brien and Robbie O'Flynn are players they will look to. Johnny Crowley's Sars had 14 points to spare over Fr O'Neill's and the All-Ireland club finalists were inspired by Jack O'Connor, Cian Darcy and the dead ball accuracy of Colm McCarthy. They will be favourites in this all east-Cork battle. On Sunday, all roads lead to Milford (4pm) for Charleville v Newtownshandrum when these two north-Cork heavyweights collide. With so much on the line for both outfits, the atmosphere will be electric. Former soccer player Dominic Foley is in as coach to Charleville and helped steer them to an 11-point success over Newcestown. And after difficult times over the years - including 2024, when they faced the prospect of relegation - this has to be a significant result for them. Psychologically, more than anything else. An impressive league display is encouraging news for their supporters too and demonstrates how much they have evolved as a group while awaiting the return of their leading light Darragh Fitzgibbon. The mention of Newtownshandrum, and the input of Tim O'Mahony and Cormac O'Brien cannot be underestimated. O'Mahony, in particular, has filled a variety of positions over the years for his beloved Green and Gold. Newtown too, have come off a decent league. Midleton provided round one opposition and it was the Magpies that emerged five point winners.

Cork hurling previews: Barrs can put one foot into knockouts
PSHC Group 3 – St Finbarr's v Blackrock, Pairc Uí Rinn, 7.30pm Both of these behemoths recorded first-round victories two weeks ago, so the prize here for the winner is to put one step into the knockout stages. With two points in the bag, the Barrs may not risk Brian Hayes while Fionn Coleman continues to be a doubt for the Rockies. The Barrs defence may tip the scales. Verdict: St Finbarr's SAHC Group 1 – Killeagh v Fermoy, Ballynoe, 7.30pm Killeagh lived up to expectations in defeating Na Piarsaigh in a classic Round 1 encounter a fortnight ago. The ball-winning abilities of Shane Smiddy and Ryan McCarthy were crucial to their cause, as was the raw potential of Barry Walsh. Fermoy will look to Jake Carr and David Larnder to get their season back on track. Verdict: Killeagh SAHC Group 3 – Bride Rovers v Courcey Rovers, Riverstown, 7.30pm Bride Rovers were impressive in beating Blarney in Round 1 with Brian and Eoin Roche, Cillian Tobin and Adam Walsh all standing out. Courceys lost out to Watergrasshill with their star man, Seán Twomey, sidelined. Richie Sweetnam and Tadhg O'Sullivan will carry the fight for Courceys, but the Bride men may have that bit too much. Verdict: Bride Rovers PIHC Group 1 – Éire Óg v Carrigaline, Cloughduv, 7.30pm Both of these sides suffered narrow defeats in Round 1, but the form of Colm O'Callaghan for Muskerry during the week may give the Ovens-based side the boost they need. Verdict: Éire Óg IAHC Group 3 – Erin's Own v Aghada, Carrigtwohill, 7.30pm Verdict: Erin's Own.
