Exeter boosted by return of skipper Sweeney

BBC Newsa day ago
Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell says he is delighted that captain Pierce Sweeney has made his return from an eight-month injury lay-off.The 30-year-old - who is celebrating his testimonial year at St James Park - started City's 2-0 Carabao Cup loss at Cheltenham Town on Wednesday night. The defender had not played since 14 December after suffering serious calf and hip injuries. "Pierce Sweeney at his best is a brilliant player for this football club," Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon."Since I've come in, he has bought into how we want the game to be played."He's got fantastic quality building from the back and the final third with his crosses, he gives us so much options to how we can play the game."
Exeter made 10 changes for the cup tie as a host of young players got first-team experience. The loss came after an impressive 4-1 victory over Blackpool on Saturday in League One.Caldwell says it is up to players such as Sweeney, who are trying to break back into the side, to prove they can outperform those who did so well last week."What we want is competition," said Caldwell. "We want a healthy squad that provides competition and at this moment in time the boys that played on Saturday in those positions, and all over the pitch, were excellent."So it's up to everyone else to when they get the opportunity to play, play well and train well every day and try and keep the competition within the squad and that's what drives performance."

Killie starlet Stout the latest example of constant abuse sports women continue to face on social media

Signing a professional sports' contract should be a time of pure, unadulterated joy. A reward for hard work, endeavour, resilience, and talent. For Kilmarnock Women's player Skye Stout, however, that moment was cruelly stripped away from her after mindless morons abused her on social media for her appearance. Stout wasn't performing on the pitch or doing anything remotely controversial. She was merely sitting there, beaming from ear to ear, without a care in the world. An image of the 16-year-old had been posted on social media by her club, who were clearly thrilled to have her sign a contract. It was supposed to be a moment the youngster would never forget, but now that will be for all the wrong reasons. The pile-on didn't take long to start. Men, with zero regard for the welfare of a teenager, laid into Stout due to a skin condition evident on her face. The abuse was so horrendous that the club made the decision to remove the post to protect their young talent from any further harm. A post published on X by Grassroots Football has been viewed by over 3 million people Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher was one of many big names to offer their support Now, let's be frank. Anyone who has suffered from acne or even spots, knows just how demoralising it can be. I know kids who suffer, who won't leave their bedrooms, won't join family gatherings, because they're terrified about what people will think of them. I can't imagine for a second how that poor kid is now feeling. Thankfully, Stout appears to have come out fighting, saying she will 'do her talking on the pitch'. This is exactly the right attitude to take, to shoot down the goons who choose to hide behind a keyboard and throw cheap shots at those who achieve even a modicum of success. What concerns me, however, is that abuse of female sports people seems to continue unabated. We saw this recently with tennis player Katie Boulter, who revealed she'd been regularly abused by online trolls with death threats and even calls for her to 'get cancer'. Fellow Brit Jodie Burrage admitted she too had been abused, this time after her Wimbledon first round exit, while Eilish McColgan, Jess Carter, Kirsty Gilmour, and many others have also spoken out about the abuse they've suffered at the hands of numbskulls online. Then there was fellow teenager, Ava Easdon, last year. A 17-year-old goalkeeper for Partick Thistle women's team, who was hideously targeted by former player Joey Barton for her performance between the sticks. One has to seriously question the motives of those who think it's okay to denigrate young women who play sport — and, indeed, those who focus in on their appearances. Yes, many men are also hit with derogatory comments — but women bear the brunt of it. A case in point is the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where a whopping 87 per cent of all abusive posts on Twitter were directed towards females. On the plus side, it's heartening to see the huge groundswell of support for Skye Stout since the image on Killie's page was pulled down. At the time of writing this, a post from 'Grassroots Football' — asking for folk to send Stout their love — has been viewed over 3million times on X. More than 72,000 people have 'liked' it. Other sport stars, such as cricketer Kevin Pietersen and former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher, have given her their backing. Stout will hopefully see how many people, football clubs, and organisations have now rallied behind her. She's not in this alone. Who knows, it may even fire the fuel in her belly because just when we thought that women's football was reaching a new level of fandom, commercial viability and support, this came along to remind both her and us that it still has a heck of a long way to go in the fight for respect and equality.

How Sunderland lined up for last Premier League game including Jordan Pickford, Man Utd legend and two Liverpool flops

IT'S BEEN eight long years but finally the Black Cats are back in the big time. Every gruesome detail of Sunderland's downfall into League One was screened on Netflix. 5 Now the cameras and spotlight return to the Stadium of Light for what promises to be a bumper showdown against West Ham on Saturday. Regis Le Bris could potentially field an entire new team against the Hammers after bringing in eleven new recruits over the summer. But what ever happened to the last side that lined-up for the club in the top-flight? Sunderland 's last Premier League fixture was back in May 2017 in a match better remembered as John Terry's bizarre final farewell to Chelsea. Despite taking an early lead, the already relegated Black Cats were thumped 5-1 at Stamford Bridge. That proved to be David Moyes' final match in charge - but here's a look at each player who was wearing red and white that day at Stamford Bridge: JORDAN PICKFORD It also proved to be academy product Pickford's last game for his hometown club as weeks later he joined Everton for £30m. It's fair to say that the now 31-year-old goalie is one of the few to go on to bigger and better things. He's still at the Toffees and preparing for their big move into their new stadium - coincidently with Moyes as his manager again. And he remains England's No1 goalie - a position he's enjoyed since 2018. BILLY JONES He arrived at Sunderland in 2014 from West Brom and played over 80 times during his four years on Wearside. Jones stayed for one another season after relegation from the Prem but departed shortly after the club dropped into the third tier 12 months later. He headed to Rotherham before hanging up his boots in 2021 after a loan spell at Crewe following knee injuries. Was last known to be working as a coach in Shrewsbury's academy. 5 JOHN O'SHEA The Manchester United legend was another who stuck it out at Sunderland for another season but departed once relegation to League One was confirmed. The former defender headed to Reading for a campaign before retiring and going into coaching. He had spells at both Birmingham and Stoke and is now Heimir Hallgrímsson's assistant manager at Republic of Ireland. JOLEON LESCOTT A Prem winner with Manchester City, this outing proved to be the final outing of the ex-England defender's career. His brief stint with the Black Cats was one to forget and this was the second of his two appearances for them. Lescott has ventured into coaching since hanging up his boots and has worked with both the U21 and senior England setup. JAVIER MANQUILLO The Spanish full-back, who had previously endured an uneventful loan spell at Liverpool, is actually the last player to score for Sunderland in the Premier League. He opened the scoring against Chelsea early doors before Willian, Eden Hazard, Pedro and a brace from Michy Batshuayi secured the Blues 5-1 victory. Full-back Manquillo returned to Atletico Madrid following this loan spell but weeks later transformed into a villain on Wearside as he joined bitter foes Newcastle on a permanent basis. He went on to spend seven years at St. James' but left in January 2024 to reunite with ex-Toon boss Rafa Benitez at Celta Vigo and is still playing there. SEB LARSSON The Swedish midfielder became a big hit with the Mackems during his six years at the club. He left for Hull City after relegation and then headed to his homeland to finish his career at AIK. Larsson has turned to coaching since retiring in 2022 and is now assistant manager to Jon Dahl Tomasson with Sweden. LEE CATTERMOLE The former Sunderland captain spent a decade at the club and stuck with them after they dropped into League One. He left for Dutch outfit VVV-Venlo in 2019 but only spent a year there before hanging up his boots. The ex-midfielder is another to have moved into coaching and has worked at both Middlesbrough and Bristol City. He recently completed his Pro Licence badge and is now eyeing up a new job. JACK RODWELL Arguably one of, if not THE, most disastrous signings in Sunderland's history. The former Everton and Man City midfielder made just 76 appearances during his four years at the club. Continuing to earn big bucks, believed to be £70,000-a-week, in the Championship, Rodwell went almost a year without featuring before his deal was eventually terminated in June 2018. Moves to Blackburn and Sheffield United failed to help him reignite his career before he headed to Australia to play for both Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney, where the 34-year-old's deal has just expired. BRYAN OVIEDO The Costa Rican arrived in January of the relegation campaign and stayed put even after the Black Cats dropped into League One. He returned to old team Copenhagen in 2019 prior to heading to the MLS with Real Salt Lake three years later. Oviedo moved back to his homeland to sign for Alajuelense a year ago though it remains to be seen whether the 35-year-old's contract will be extended. ADNAN JANUZAJ The ex-Manchester United wonderkid failed to shine during his loan spell at Sunderland and left Old Trafford permanently for Real Sociedad that summer after relegation. The Belgium attacker later moved to Sevilla in 2022 but has been sent out on loan to Istanbul Basaksehir and Las Palmas over the past two campaigns. FABIO BORINI The 34-year-old one cap Italy international, who previously underwhelmed at both Chelsea and Liverpool, was a firm favourite on Wearside. He departed after the drop and headed to AC Milan and has since played for Hellas Verona, Turkish club Karagumruk and spent the past two seasons with Sampdoria. Borini has recently been back in England after becoming a free agent and been training with other out of contract players in a PFA camp.

Liverpool vs Bournemouth LIVE SCORE: Gakpo doubles the Reds' lead after Ekitike's strike in Prem opener

LIVERPOOL are now TWO up in this season's Premier League opener against Bournemouth. Hugo Ekitike kept his composure in front of goal before coolly slotting past Petrovic. And Cody Gakpo doubled Liverpool's lead with a sublime finish before paying a lovely tribute to Diogo Jota. just now By Sam Dymond Liverpool 2-0 Bournemouth 52. Liverpool keep on surging forward now, and Mac Allister almost makes it three with a stunning drive from 25 yards. In fact, only an equally impressive fingertip save from Petrovic keeps the Argentine from the scoresheet. 3 minutes ago By Sam Dymond Liverpool 2-0 Bournemouth 49. The champions are firing once more! This time Hugo Ekitike turns provider, laying the ball into the path of Cody Gakpo on the left of the penalty area. The Dutchman takes it upon himself to weave his way along the edge of the box, and when he sells Marcus Tavernier a dummy, the space opens up for him to caress the ball into the bottom corner of Djordje Petrovic's goal. Lovely stuff! 4 minutes ago By Sam Dymond Cody at the Kop! 27 minutes ago Ken Lawrence on Antonine Semenyo abuse There always has to be an idiot. On a night so full of emotion around the tragic death of Liverpool striker Diogo Jota, amidst a belter of a game with Bournemouth really impressive on the counter before Hugo Ekitike's fine Prem debut goal, the last thing the occasion needed was a racist comment. But that is what Antoine Semenyo reported to referee Anthony Taylor that he heard from the crowd. The guilty party or parties should be ashamed of themselves. Disgraceful. 28 minutes ago By Sam Dymond Liverpool 1-0 Bournemouth 42. Milos Kerkez goes into Anthony Taylor's book. The new Liverpool left-back has been diving into challenges all night, and it was only a matter of time before he got one wrong. Diving in on a flying Adam Smith, the Hungarian upends his former captain and is promptly shown a yellow card. 30 minutes ago By Sam Dymond Liverpool 1-0 Bournemouth 41. Bournemouth are showing no signs of being disheartened at falling behind. Andoni Iraola's side are pushing forward, and pursuing an equaliser before the break. 33 minutes ago By Sam Dymond Liverpool 1-0 Bournemouth 39. Ekitike with a second! No! A lovely cross clipped in from the left by Gakpo is met by the towering striker, but he gets himself under the ball and heads over Petrovic's goal. 34 minutes ago By Sam Dymond Liverpool 1-0 Bournemouth 37. A first Premier League goal for Hugo Ekitike! The striker has been all action this evening and deserves this breakthrough strike, and it's one that - unsurprisingly - he makes himself. Dropping deep to exchange passes with Virgil van Dijk, the Frenchman then finds Alexis Mac Allister in space. Receiving a return ball, Ekitike then attempts to nick it past Marcos Senesi on the edge of the Bournemouth penalty area. When the ball this time falls kindly for the new Liverpool man, he bears down on Djordje Petrovic and cooly wrongfoots him with a side-footed finish. 35 minutes ago By Sam Dymond Hugo boss!
