Fire erupts in Islamabad's Margalla Hills, containment efforts underway
ISLAMABAD: A wildfire erupted in the Margalla Hills in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad on Monday, the Islamabad district administration said, with efforts underway to put out the blaze.
The Margalla range, part of the Himalayan foothills, often experiences bushfires in the summer months. Last year, several incidents of forest fire were reported at the hills as various parts of the country remained in the grip of intense heatwaves.
On Monday, a fire broke out near Saidpur Darra, Jungle Number 15 and Rumli areas on the hills, prompting an immediate response from the Capital Development Authority's (CDA) fire brigade and officials of the district administration.
'More than 70 firefighters are participating in the operation to control the fire,' the district administration said in a statement.
'The fire was brought under control once, but it broke out again.'
No casualties or property damage have been reported in the wake of the fire, according to authorities.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
'The fire will be brought under control again soon,' the district administration added.

More than 100 inmates escaped from a prison and at least one was killed in a shootout in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi overnight after they were temporarily moved out of their cells following mild earthquake tremors, officials said Tuesday. Kashif Abbasi, a senior police official, said 216 inmates fled the prison in the capital of Sindh province before dawn. Of those, 78 had been recaptured. No one convicted or facing trial as a militant is among those who fled, he said. One prisoner was killed and three security officials were wounded in the ensuing shootout, but the situation has been brought under control, Abbasi said, adding that police are conducting raids to capture the remaining escapees. Ziaul Hassan, the home minister of Sindh province, said the jailbreak occurred after prisoners were evacuated from their cells for safety during the earthquake. The inmates were still outside of the cells when a group suddenly attacked guards, seized their weapons, opened fire and fled. Though prisoners have escaped while being transported to court for trial, prison beaks are not common in Pakistan, where authorities have enhanced security since 2013 when the Pakistani Taliban freed more than 200 inmates in an attack on a prison in the northwestern district of Dera Ismail Khan. Karachi has experienced several mild and shallow earthquakes in the past 24 hours, ranging from 2.6 to 3.4 in magnitude, according to the National Seismic Monitoring Center.

Over 100 inmates escape Karachi prison damaged by earthquake— official
KARACHI: Over 100 inmates managed to escape from the Malir prison in Karachi late Monday night after the outer gate of the jail was damaged by tremors this week, a senior Sindh government official confirmed. Speaking to reporters late Monday night, Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar said inmates panicked when tremors hit Karachi late Monday night. He said around 700 to 1,000 prisoners gathered outside their barracks near the jail's outer gate in panic when the tremors shook the area. Lanjar said it became difficult for jail authorities to control a mob of 700 to 1,000 prisoners near the gate, which had been damaged by the quake. 'The gate which you can see behind me was damaged [by the earthquake] due to which the prisoners were able to escape,' the Sindh official told reporters. He said that while authorities were counting the number of prisoners who had escaped, as per initial estimates, around 80-100 prisoners had managed to flee. 'As per what the deputy inspector general of police east has told me so far, so far 46 prisoners have been re-arrested,' Lanjar said, adding that around 18-20 prisoners were at large. He said no 'hardened criminal' had managed to escape the jail following the late-night chaos. In response to a question, he said one prisoner had been killed in clashes with police during the jailbreak while five persons, including both prisoners and police officials, were injured.

Pakistan's Punjab issues fresh rain alert after 21 killed by storms last month
ISLAMABAD: The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Monday issued a fresh alert about rains and strong, dusty winds in the province from June 2 till June 5, days after thunderstorms killed nearly two dozen people in Pakistan's most populous province. Thunderstorms killed at least 21 people and injured more than 100 others in Punjab as moist currents penetrated upper parts of Pakistan late last month, according to national and provincial disaster management authorities. More rains and gusty winds are expected in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiat, Attock, Chakwal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot, Narowal, Okara, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar districts. 'Citizens should stay in safe places to protect themselves from lightning. The public should never go out under the open sky during thunderstorms and storms,' the PDMA quoted its Director-General Irfan Ali Kathia as saying. Due to possible rains, it said, the intensity of heat will decrease during the three-day Eid Al-Adha festival, which begins on Saturday. Kathia said the PDMA has alerted the district administrations as well as health, irrigation, construction and communications, local government and livestock departments. Pakistan has seen erratic changes in its weather patterns which have led to frequent heat waves, untimely rains, storms, cyclones and droughts in recent years. Scientists have blamed the events on human-driven climate change. Thunderstorms last month also claimed more than 10 lives, while 30 others sustained injuries in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan's northwest, according to provincial authorities. In 2022, devastating floods, blamed on human-driven climate change, killed more than 1,700 Pakistanis, affected another 33 million and caused the country over $30 billion in economic losses.
