Karnataka leads country in adding wind power capacity
BENGALURU: Karnataka has topped the country in wind power capacity addition for 2024-25, adding 1,331.48 MW — the highest among all states. The achievement was recognised at the Global Wind Day 2025 celebrations, held under the theme 'Pawan-Urja: Powering the Future of India'. Tamil Nadu and Gujarat followed, with additions of 1,136.37 MW and 954.76 MW, respectively.
Energy Minister KJ George, who received the award from Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, mentioned that Karnataka's total installed wind power capacity has now reached 7,351 MW and that the state has a commitment to the national goal of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, including 100 GW from wind.
Joshi said, 'As a proud Kannadiga, it's meaningful to celebrate Global Wind Day in Karnataka — the land of Hanuman, the original symbol of wind power. Just as he embodied the power of the wind, we are now capturing it through modern offshore turbines.'
Highlighting India's growing capabilities, Joshi said, 'In 2014, our solar manufacturing capacity was just 2-3 GW. Today, we manufacture 90 GW worth of modules. The same is happening in wind – nacelles, gearboxes, turbines – all are now being made in India.' He added that domestic manufacturing of high-end electronics like mobile phones, including Apple devices, has risen significantly because of government policy. 'Today, 97% of Apple phones exported to the US in March and April came from India,' he noted.
The minister identified three key challenges - ensuring 24x7 power and grid stability through integration of wind, solar, and pumped storage, offering competitive power tariffs and boosting domestic manufacturing to position India as a global leader in green energy.
Joshi also released a report titled 'Ramping Up Local Manufacturing for Wind Turbines in India', which outlines a strategy to strengthen India's wind turbine manufacturing ecosystem.

Five questions from Abhishek Banerjee to Centre on Pahalgam massacre
Trinamool Congress General Secretary and the party's Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee, on Monday, posed five questions to the Centre on the ghastly terror attack at Pahalgam in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) in which Hindu tourists were selectively killed in April this year. In a statement which Banerjee posted on the wall of his official X handle, he also attacked the Opposition parties and the media for refraining from seeking the answers to these five questions from the Union government. 'It has been over 55 days since the Pahalgam terror attack. It is deeply concerning that in a democracy neither the mainstream media, members of the Opposition, nor the judiciary has stepped forward to raise these five critical questions before the Government of India. However, as a citizen committed to the nation's well-being and as a public representative entrusted with accountability, I raise these five questions before the Government of India,' the statement by Banerjee read. "The first question is how did the four terrorists manage to infiltrate the border and launch an attack that killed 26 innocent civilians and where was the accountability for this massive breach in national security in the matter?" he said. 'If this was an Intelligence failure, why was the Intelligence Bureau chief granted a one-year extension, that, too, barely a month after the attack? Why was he rewarded rather than being held accountable? What is the compulsion? If the Government of India can conveniently use PEGASUS spyware against Opposition leaders (including me), journalists, and even judges, what stops it from using the same tools against terrorist networks and suspects?' the second question read. The third question was about the current status of the four terrorists who were responsible for the Pahalgam massacre. 'Where are the four terrorists responsible for this brutal, religion-based massacre? Are they dead or alive? If they have been neutralised, why has the government failed to make a clear statement? And if they haven't, why is there silence?' the third question read. In his fourth question, Banerjee had sought a specific deadline from the Union government for the goal to make Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) an integral part of India. In the same question, Banerjee enquired why India did not officially respond to the U.S. President's claim that he persuaded India into a ceasefire with promises of trade. 'Just as the nation stood together irrespective of their cast, creed, religion, and political affinity, celebrating the triumph of righteousness and saluting the valour and sacrifice of our armed forces, why were the emotions of 140 crore Indians disregarded? What led to such a compromise?' the fourth question read. The fifth and final question was more elaborate dealing with global diplomacy in the matter. In this question, Banerjee demanded clarification on how many of the 33 countries that were approached after the Pahalgam massacre, extended explicit support to India. 'If we are truly a 'Vishwaguru' and the world's fourth-largest economy, why did the IMF and World Bank approve $1 billion and $40 billion in financial assistance and long-term investments to Pakistan immediately after the Pahalgam attack? How did a nation repeatedly involved in cross-border terrorism not only escape global scrutiny but get rewarded?' Banerjee questioned. At the same time, he questioned, how was Pakistan the vice-chair of the UN Security Council's Counter-Terrorism Committee barely a month after the Pahalgam massacre. 'Over ₹2000000000000 (two lakh crores) has been spent on external affairs over the past 10 years. The Indian public deserves transparency, accountability, and results, not silence and spin! The nation awaits a response!' Banerjee's final question read.

Ambedkar photo row: BJP attacks Lalu Prasad, demands apology
Bihar BJP chief Dilip Jaiswal and Union Minister Giriraj Singh launched a scathing attack on RJD national president Lalu Prasad Yadav on Monday, accusing him of allegedly insulting Dr BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. Dilip Jaiswal demanded an apology from Lalu and his family, alleging that a photograph of Ambedkar was placed near the feet of the RJD chief during his 78th birthday celebration on June 11. 'Baba Saheb Ambedkar is a messiah of the Dalit community and the entire nation. Lalu Prasad Yadav has insulted him by placing his photo at his feet. The people of this country will never forgive such an act,' Jaiswal said while interacting with the media persons. Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh echoed the sentiment and escalated the demand for an apology. 'Dr. Ambedkar is revered as a god-like figure in India. What Lalu Prasad Yadav did in arrogance -- placing his photo near his feet -- is shocking. He should apologise by standing in the Ganga river,' Singh said. The controversy emerged from visuals that surfaced during Lalu's birthday event, where a photograph of Dr Ambedkar was seen placed near his feet. The BJP has taken strong objection to this, terming it an act of disrespect. Meanwhile, Giriraj Singh also hit back at Tejashwi Yadav, who had recently alleged nepotism in the Nitish Kumar government, claiming that the sons-in-law of leaders like Ram Vilas Paswan, Jitan Ram Manjhi, and Ashok Choudhary were given plum positions in various commissions. 'The way Tejashwi Yadav is speaking, it's like a thief accusing someone of theft. He should introspect before making such allegations,' the Union Minister retorted. The RJD has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations. However, the incident has added a new dimension to the ongoing war of words between the BJP-led NDA and the RJD-led opposition, especially with the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections on the horizon.

Union minister Piyush Goyal seeks blessings at Tirumala, prays for nation's well-being
TIRUPATI: Union minister for Commerce and Industries, Piyush Goyal, offered prayers to Lord Venkateswara at the Tirumala temple on Monday. Piyush Goyal was accompanied by his family members, AP industries minister TG Bharath, and revenue minister Anagani Satya Prasad during his visit to the Tirumala temple. Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams priests and officials, led by chairman BR Naidu and additional executive officer Ch Venkaiah Chowdary, accorded a traditional welcome to the Union minister's entourage and led them to the sanctum sanctorum, where they worshipped the presiding deity for a brief while.
