Barcelona continue to closely monitor 16-year-old attacking prodigy for next summer
Links to Varela continued this summer, and reports emerged claiming that Barcelona were working on a deal worth €5 million in fixed fees plus €20 million in performance-based add-ons.
However, the 16-year-old wonderkid signed a contract renewal with Dinamo Zagreb until 2028 this summer, closing the doors on an exit.
Barcelona continue to track Varela
But, SPORT now reports that Barcelona continue to follow Varela closely ahead of the next summer transfer window.
The young winger continues to make waves and was one of the standout performers in Dinamo Zagreb's latest pre-season match on Saturday against Ukrainian side FC Kryvbas.
The 16-year-old came off the bench and made an impact, scoring the goal that made it 4–1. Just four minutes later, in the 82nd minute, after a well-timed run into space, he delivered a pass into the penalty area that resulted in an own goal.
All of this came within only 30 minutes on the pitch.
The upcoming season is expected to be one of growth and consolidation in Croatian top-flight football for Varela.
However, Dinamo manager Mario Kovacevic is proceeding with caution. This approach comes in part due to a recent injury scare. Earlier in July, Varela left a training session with discomfort, but the issue turned out to be minor.
Regardless, Varela's latest top-level display with Dinamo Zagreb's first team is further evidence of why Barcelona have shown strong interest.
As such, the club is working on a plan for the Portuguese winger to join the team in the summer of 2026, when he will be close to turning 18.
Barcelona enjoy a positive relationship with the player's agent, Andy Bara, who also represents Dani Olmo and Joan Garcia, further strengthening their chances.

Arsenal completes signing of Spain U21 defender Cristhian Mosquera
LONDON (AP) — Cristhian Mosquera became Arsenal's fifth signing of the off season on Thursday after completing a move from Valencia. The Spain Under 21 defender cost a reported 13 million pounds ($17.5 million) and signed a five-year deal with the option of a further 12 months. 'We identified Cristhian as one of the strongest young defenders in European football, and he is an important signing for our future,' Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta said. Arsenal, which has finished runner-up in the Premier League for the last three seasons, has been active in the market this summer. The move for Mosquera comes after deals for midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, forward Noni Madueke and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. The London club is also widely expected to sign a striker, with Viktor Gyokeres a reported target. The 21-year-old Mosquera was born in Spain and is also eligible to play for Colombia. He won gold at the Paris Olympics with Spain last year. 'He is a young player with exciting talent and enormous potential, who will fit well into our squad as we continue to prepare for next season,' manager Mikel Arteta said. ___ AP soccer:

Cardoso hoping to make history as first US player at Atletico
New Atletico Madrid signing Johnny Cardoso said Thursday he wants to "make history" as the first player from the United States at the club. The American midfielder joined the Rojiblancos from Real Betis last week for an estimated 25 million euros ($29 million). "All of this is very special and I hope to make history here as the first American to play at this club," Cardoso told Atletico's club media. The 23-year-old made his international debut in 2020 and has 22 international caps. Diego Simeone's side have rebuilt this summer after letting Saul Niguez, Axel Witsel, Angel Correa, Cesar Azpilicueta and others depart. Cardoso joined along with Alex Baena from Villarreal, Thiago Almada, Marc Pubill and Matteo Ruggeri. The midfielder highlighted some of Atletico's players he was excited to play with. "Koke is a player who I learn a lot from watching him play, (Antoine) Griezmann and Julian (Alvarez) are phenomenons. "We have a lot of players here who I will enjoy being with every day and I am sure I will evolve with them." Cardoso said he was looking forward to working with Simeone. "It's very special and a unique opportunity to be coached by him," he added. "His professionalism is an example, so to be able to share, learn and have all his advice will be very special." rbs/nf
