Kinetic DX vs Ather Rizta: Price and specifications compared. Take a look…

Mint7 days ago
In India's fast-growing electric two-wheeler market, the newly launched Kinetic DX revives a beloved nameplate from the past, bringing a nostalgic design twist to modern-day EV commuting. But it's up against stiff competition, including the Ather Rizta, a feature-rich, family-focused scooter that's already made its mark with practicality and performance.
Here's how the retro-modern Kinetic DX stacks up against the contemporary Ather Rizta in terms of pricing, specs, and appeal.
The Kinetic DX is priced between ₹ 1.12 lakh and ₹ 1.17 lakh (ex-showroom), offering two variants, DX and DX+, focused on value with nostalgic charm. In comparison, the Ather Rizta starts at the same ₹ 1.12 lakh (ex-showroom), but its top variant stretches up to ₹ 1.49 lakh. This broader range gives buyers more flexibility depending on the battery pack and feature set they want. While both scooters start at the same base price, Ather offers a wider range of options.
The Kinetic DX+ is powered by a 2.6 kWh LFP battery, which offers an IDC-rated range of up to 116 km and a top speed of 90 kmph. It also delivers 6.4 bhp of peak power, giving it a relatively brisk performance edge in this segment. On the other hand, the Ather Rizta offers more battery flexibility. The entry-level Rizta S gets a 2.9 kWh battery with a range of 123 km, while the top-end Z variant with a 3.7 kWh battery boasts an impressive range of 159 km. All three variants of the Rizta are limited to a top speed of 80 kmph. The Kinetic DX+ is quicker, but the Rizta pulls ahead with longer range and battery options.
The Kinetic DX leans heavily on nostalgia, reviving design elements from the original Kinetic Honda DX. It features a Kinetic logo-shaped LED DRL, a unique LED headlamp, and a vintage-style visor with Kinetic branding. While it nods to the past, it also includes updated EV design cues. The Ather Rizta, meanwhile, focuses on practical modernity. Its design is clean and family-friendly, with a wider seat, spacious footboard, and user-oriented features. Being an Ather product, it also offers advanced connected tech, app support, and a sharp digital interface. In short, the DX speaks to emotion, while the Rizta speaks to function.

Ather Energy narrows Q1 loss on higher demand

E-scooter maker Ather Energy reported a narrower first-quarter loss on Monday on higher demand, and said it expects a week of "potential business impact" only in the second quarter due to China's rare-earth magnet export ban . Ather expects around a week's worth of a supply gap to dealers due to China's ban but aims to manage the impact with existing inventory, CEO Tarun Mehta said in post-earnings call. The company is also exploring alternatives, including a shift to more widely available light rare earth magnets, which remain unrestricted, he added. China, which supplies around 90 per cent of the world's rare earth magnets, imposed the export ban in April. Last week major Indian carmakers Mahindra, Hyundai India shrugged off medium-term issues from the export ban, with Mahindra saying it was using alternatives such as light rare-earths and ferrites. Ather Energy, which makes the popular "Rizta" e-scooter, said its losses narrowed to ₹178 crore ($20.3 million) in the quarter ended June 30 from ₹183 crore a year ago, helped by sales that grew nearly two-fold to 46,078 units. Backed by Hero MotoCorp, Ather entered India's EV market in 2018 as an early mover, but has since lost ground to rivals such as Ola Electric and legacy players with stronger finances and a broader reach. Its revenue surged 78.8 per cent on-year to ₹645 crore, but rising material costs pushed overall expenses 54.4 per cent higher. Its adjusted gross margin rose to 23 per cent from 19 per cent a year ago, driven by non-vehicle revenue such as warranty programs, software and accessories such as its "Halo" helmets. Ather's shares rose as much as 19.4 per cent to a record high of ₹414.65 rupees on Monday after its quarterly results and closed 14 per cent higher. reuters

Ather to unveil new platform EL, likely to drive sales uptick

Ather Energy is getting ready to ramp up its game as it prepares to unveil a new platform, called EL, later this month during the annual community day. This would be a brand new platform for developing at least one more family scooter (currently Ather sells the Rizta based on the older platform). Analysts have already indicated that the new platform is a significant factor in their projections of a healthy volume growth and market share increase for the company going forward. But will products built on the new platform signal Ather's entry into the mass market, with pricing below the psychological mark of ₹1 lakh? A source said that at least initially, the new scooter built on the EL platform may be priced above the ₹1 lakh mark despite production cost savings. And speaking after the declaration of June quarter results, Tarun Mehta , Executive Director and CEO, told analysts 'EL… will help us expand the market because it's a cheaper platform for us to manufacture. It will also be manufactured largely out of our new facility which is more vertically integrated so has better assembly costs. So, overall EL opens up the gate for more accessible priced products in the coming year'. How critical the new EL platform will be for Ather can be gauged from the fact that analysts at Nomura have estimated sales volumes of the company to rise at a cumulative annual growth rate of about 41 per cent till FY28. Among the reasons for this growth would be the new EL platform besides rapid distribution expansion and the launch of another platform for motorcycles, called Zenith. Our focus is shifting on network expansion into this zone as we speak. This is a very large zone. States like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, really giant geographies, all of Northeast, we are very excited about themTarun Mehta 'We estimate its volumes to rise at a CAGR of ~41 per cent over FY25-28F, from 155,000 in FY25 to 436,000 in FY28F. This will be backed by the doubling of its stores from about 350 (March-25), launch of the 'EL' platform in FY27 and the 'Zenith' motorcycle platform down the line,' the Nomura analysts said. And HSBC said that 'The upcoming launch of the new EL production platform in August this year to target the economy scooter segment should be a market share tailwind.' Q1 performance In the first quarter of FY26, Ather's total income was ₹672.9 crore, growing by 83 per cent year-on-year. Adjusted gross margins rose by 117 per cent to ₹154.8 crore, EBITDA margins improved by 1,700 basis points, from negative 33 per cent to negative 16 per cent. The company sold 46,078 units in the quarter, up 97 per cent year-on-year, driven by robust demand for the Ather Rizta and an expanding retail footprint. The loss after tax was ₹178.2 crore. The first quarter also saw Ather improve its market share. Mehta said during the call that Ather almost doubled its share year-on-year to 14.3 per cent in the June quarter this fiscal and compared to the previous March quarter, market share expanded by 70 basis points. 'To better understand this growth I think it's important to focus on our strategy which has been based on geography… in south India we have generally been a strong player and there our strategy has been in building up our dominance. Q1 FY26 was the first quarter when, for the entirety of the quarter, Ather became the number one player by volume ending with a 22.8 per cent market share'. Most of Ather's market share growth has been driven by faster distribution expansion and Mehta said that in FY26, 'a fair bit of growth will continue coming from the middle India geography. Rest of India, particularly North India, we have added stores and we have expanded our network. But really our focus is shifting on network expansion into this zone as we speak. This is a very large zone. States like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, really giant geographies, all of Northeast, we are very excited about them.' Q1 FY26 was the first quarter when, for the entirety of the quarter, Ather became the number one player by volume ending with a 22.8 per cent market shareTarun Mehta Rare earth impact The legacy ICE two-wheeler OEMs have already indicated a major impact on production this month due to the crippling shortage of rare earth magnets. But Ather's Mehta said that the rare earth magnet shortage could impact the business for just about a week this quarter. 'The right way to see this would be not production stopping for seven days but a possible gap in our ability to fulfill our dealers' demand for up to about a week for this entire quarter. Obviously teams continue working hard on minimising this. …This will have some impact on retail. I would be amiss if I say this will have no impact on retail because our channel stocks are not that high…I think it would have a small impact in Q2 hopefully.' Mehta said that the key challenge was China's ban on export of heavy rare earth magnets. 'This leaves a few possible options. Either you partly assemble your motors in China and don't import magnets or you move production to heavy rare earth free magnets… Or you move away from rare earth of any category and move to ferrite. Now in our case, we are exploring all. I will not be able to share at this point. I'll likely be able to give more color by the end of Q2 (July-September quarter), once we finish the transition. But at this point, honestly, we are exploring all options.'

Ather Energy shares tumble 5% even as Q1 net loss narrows 2%YoY. Should you buy?

Shares of Ather Energy fell 4.6% on Tuesday to hit a day's low of Rs 380.80 on the BSE, after the company reported a net loss of Rs 178.20 crore for the first quarter of FY26, compared to Rs 182.90 crore in the same period last year. ADVERTISEMENT This indicates a 2.6% year-on-year reduction in losses. Ather Energy posted a 97% year-on-year (YoY) volume growth in Q1. The company sold 46,078 units, fueled by rising demand for its flagship model Ather Rizta and an aggressive retail expansion strategy. The company's total income surged 83% YoY to Rs 672.9 crore in the quarter ended June 2025. A robust 117% increase in Adjusted Gross Margin to Rs 154.8 crore and a 1,700 basis point YoY improvement in EBITDA margin marked significant financial improvements. EBITDA losses narrowed to Rs 106 crore, and net losses post-tax reduced to Rs 178.2 added 95 new Experience Centres (ECs) during Q1, expanding its national footprint to 446 ECs. This follows 86 EC additions in Q4 FY25. The retail network boost has been instrumental in enhancing accessibility and lowering breakeven volumes, ultimately improving operational efficiency. ADVERTISEMENT Ather's national market share nearly doubled to 14.3% during the period under review from 7.6% in Q1 FY25. The company retained its leadership in South India with a dominant 22.8% share and achieved 2.6x growth in Middle India (comprising Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha), reaching a 10.7% revenue—comprising software, accessories, and services—contributed 12% of total income, benefitting from higher margins. Ather's charging network also saw major growth, expanding to 4,032 points across India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, up from 3,611 in the previous quarter. ADVERTISEMENT The company continues to focus on profitability with sustained R&D-led engineering, a value-centric product mix, and growing contribution from non-vehicle revenue. Ather's strategic deployment of multiple retail formats has further strengthened its scalability and cost structure, positioning it well for continued growth into the Q1 results, domestic brokerage firm HDFC Securities noted that Ather Energy's management has demonstrated strong capability in scaling revenue and improving margins, with the financial benefits expected to materialise sooner than previously anticipated. ADVERTISEMENT The company's robust R&D capabilities and operational agility are likely to enhance product performance, especially with the strategic shift toward using light rare earth magnets. This move mitigates the production risks associated with the earlier shortage of heavy rare earth magnets, which had posed a significant overhang.
