In the sixth chapter of the Bhagwad Gita, Krishn elevates the discourse on yog from the external to the internal. He asserts that
Karm Yog
—performing one's worldly duties without attachment—is nobler than renunciation. But beyond all, the yogi who meditates with unwavering devotion to the Divine is supreme (6.47). This vision of yog is not escapism, but a precise alignment of our attention, energy, and time with spiritual realization.
The Age of Scattered Attention
Modern life is not short of stimulation, but it is starved of stillness. In an era of infinite scrolling, attention has become our rarest resource. And as the Gita proclaims, 'Elevate yourself through the power of your mind, not degrade yourself; for the mind is both friend and enemy' (6.5).
This internal war—between the distracted and the disciplined mind—is where yog truly begins.
Focus: The Spiritual Muscle

Yog is the ancient art of winning that battle. It is the practice of bringing the mind back—again and again—to the Divine, as described in Gita 6.26: 'Whenever the mind wanders... bring it back under control.'
The Kundalini, the rising serpent, symbolizes this precise power—of awakening focus, of uncoiling our spiritual energy toward its highest possibility.

Attention as Enlightenment
Modern psychology echoes these ancient truths. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, in his seminal work,
Flow
, observes: "The best moments in life occur when a person's body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile."
This is Yog: not relaxation, but immersion. Not escape, but engagement with our highest self.
The Lamp That Does Not Flicker
A mind trained in yog becomes like a flame in a windless place (6.19)—still, unwavering, full of light.
It sees gold, dirt, and stone as equal (6.8), and beholds the Self in all beings and all beings in the Self (6.29). This is not poetic fantasy, but a lived transformation, attainable by persistent practice and joyful detachment.
From Self-Help to Selflessness
Real yog is not about helping ourselves—but transcending the self. The Gita teaches that the yogi lives in the world but is not of it. He works, sleeps, eats, and interacts in balance (6.17), free from the turbulence of likes and dislikes.
He becomes a mirror, not a mask—a presence that reflects love, impartiality, and inner bliss.
The Way Forward
As we honour Yog on this day, let us honor not just its physical elegance, but its spiritual essence. Let us strive not just to stretch our limbs, but to still our minds, not just to master poses, but to master attention.
In a world of noise, the yogi is the silence that sings.
In the storm of desires, the yogi is the center that holds.
And above all, in a civilization distracted by consumption, the yogi is a reminder that being is enough.

The doer, the physical body, the life air, the various kinds of organs, and the Divinity ( God ). Adhishtanam tatha karta CH-18-Verse-14. God extends to us a limited free will to perform actions, and we have to use it judiciously. Noble men would feel that if they faced problems and sufferings, it may be due to their misdeeds, and if any good thing happened, it would be because of God's blessings. A doubt arises whether the fruit of the action is due to our performance or granted by God. All our deeds are to be aimed at satisfying God, and if He is pleased, He will extend His blessings. He will not give at random. It depends on our attitudes and beliefs. In the churning of the milk ocean, the celestials indulged in it with the sole aim of rendering service to God, while the Asuras tried to overpower God. Hence, He chose to give nectar to the celestials. Dharma has several meanings and explanations, and in this context, it refers to 'Sastras', which define a set of rules and regulations to be followed. The Lord says that the Vedas and the Sastras are His commands (Sruthi Smruthir mamaivagnya). By following the prescribed codes of conduct, people can derive His blessings and reach the realm of His abode.

Heavy showers in Mumbai trigger pothole woes: Over 3,300 complaints in 12 days

After a week of heavy rainfall lashing the city, as many as 3,396 complaints over potholes were raised by residents over a period of 12 days till Tuesday afternoon. In comparison, between June and July 17, a total of 3,461 pothole grievances were flagged by the citizens. Of the total complaints raised by citizens through mediums ranging from the newly launched My Pothole Quick Fix app and WhatsApp bot channels, nearly 38 per cent of the pothole woes have emerged in Bhandup, Andheri West and Mulund. According to records, the maximum pothole grievances have been reported in S ward, Bhandup, wherein at least 1,412 potholes have surfaced since June. As potholes record an uptick across city's roads amid rising monsoon activity since June, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed a road engineer each across its 227 wards to carry out daily inspection and proactively fill pits to prevent untoward incidents. This year, the BMC also launched the My Pothole Quick Fix' app which enables citizens to flag pothole related complaints. Besides this, citizens can also flag complaints through social media, WhatsApp chatbot and the civic disaster management number. Upon receiving grievance, the civic body aims to resolve each complaint within a bracket of 24 – 48 hours. Sharp rise in complaints Data furnished by the civic body showed that between June and July 17, 3,461 complaints had been flagged by the citizens through various channels, while 3,297 other potholes had been identified by the civic engineers during their inspection. The Indian Express, in a report published July 28, highlighted that this marked a rise of at least 8 per cent complaints during the same period in the previous year, even as the mega-concretisation project is nearly halfway achieved. However, following the resurgence of monsoon activity in the previous week, more potholes have surfaced along the city's roads. While 3,461 complaints had been flagged by citizens until July 17, by Monday afternoon, the total number of pothole related complaints touched 6,859 on Tuesday afternoon. According to the pothole dashboard, these encompass woes raised by citizens using the new application as well as the WhatsApp Chatbot. Of these, the civic body had resolved 5,341 complaints until Tuesday afternoon and 1,518 potholes were being fixed. Bhandup worst hit Of the total complaints, nearly 38 complaints have been reported in three wards alone — S ward (Bhandup), K/West (Andheri) and T ward (Mulund). Bhandup, records show, is amongst the worst hit wards with maximum potholes afflicting its roads. Since June, over 1,412 complaints have been raised in Bhandup of which, the BMC has resolved 676 plaints while 736 complaints are being currently addressed. After Bhandup, the second highest complaints have been recorded in Andheri West (K/West ward) wherein citizens have raised at least 616 pothole complaints since the onset of monsoon in June until Tuesday afternoon. Of these, civic officials said that 564 complaints have been addressed, 52 are being resolved while four are under review. At 563 complaints until Tuesday afternoon, meanwhile, Mulund has the third highest number of potholes reported. Behind the high number of potholes Responding to questions about the high number of the eastern suburbs' Bhandup and Mulund belt, senior officials from the BMC pointed to a 'suo moto' pothole filling drive which was launched by the Deputy Municipal Commissioner (DMC) of Zone 6 over the weekend on July 26. 'Mulund and Bhandup, both fall under Zone 6, wherein a drive was launched to identify and fix potholes in the zone during the previous weekend. The objective was to proactively identify potholes across the ward and not wait for citizens to flag the complaints. The drive was launched during the weekend as the vehicular traffic is less during this period. Owing to this drive, it is possible that the number of potholes registered in these areas is higher compared to the other pockets,' said an official. Meanwhile, about the K/West ward (Andheri area), another official told The Indian Express, 'While we have been proactively identifying the potholes ourselves and set our ward roads to high standards, citizens in K/West ward are also generally more aware. Therefore, the number of cases reported in these wards also tend to be higher.' For the record, the K/West ward is home to 13 electoral wards. According to records, the maximum number of potholes have been observed along the non-concretised (asphalt or paver block) roads, which the civic body is fixing using mastic. For this, the BMC has been pressing an average of 8 -10 mastic cooker machines daily and laying a certain amount of mastic to fix the pits. Speaking to The Indian Express, a senior BMC official maintained, 'While we are receiving and addressing the complaints, the comparison of the numbers between wards can be misleading as they are objective. In some cases, we are observing that several people are also reporting complaints about uneven surfaces under the pothole criteria.' 'Besides this, the quantity of mastic used so far is much less than the previous year, indicating that the potholes are being fixed immediately upon being identified. Our ultimate objective is to ensure that potholes are identified and fixed at the earliest,' added the official. So far, this year, only 6,548 metric tonnes (MT) of mastic has been used to repair potholes as against 25,632 MT mastic used in 2024 in this period. In a bid to fix potholes, this year, the BMC has deployed two mastic cookers — one for potholes which are wider than 9-metre and another for smaller potholes — across each of Mumbai's wards through contractors.

Sometimes, staying detached is the solution to life's difficult moments. And it can help with not taking others' criticisms personally. Remember, their criticism and harsh words are a reflection of their views and how they are as a person-- and it had nothing to do with you, in most cases. Learn to let go of others' rude comments, and this will save you your mental peace which is more important. The Bhagwad Gita says, "Just as a lamp's flame remains still and unwavering in the absence of wind, so is a yogi's mind fixed on the object of meditation who is united with the Self." In other words, when senses are fully controlled and turned inwards, the mind becomes calm and still, just as the Sun is visible in a tranquil, motionless lake. But when the mind is full of desires and distractions, it is restless and shaky, like a flickering lamp in the wind. We live in a world of movement, sound, form, emotion, and ambition. The mind runs like a chariot led by untamed horses, pulled in every direction. But we need not condemn this mind; rather, understand it, still its restlessness, and transform it into a vessel of Divine awareness. Sit quietly. Let your spine be straight, breathe gently, with your gaze turned inward. The hands rested in chinmudra or jananamudra, symbolic of the union of the individual soul with the universal truth. Let pran settle like the Ganga returning to calm after a storm. Watch, and you will see thoughts emerge and dissolve like waves upon water. Some bring joy, others sorrow, but all pass. And yet, behind all of them, something constant remains: the Witness, Self, Atman. In this state of inner witnessing, you are no longer entangled. You see the mind as it is a tool, not a tyrant. The senses may call you outward, but you no longer leap in response. You remain centred, like the still hub of a spinning wheel. As you inhale and exhale gently, watch the movement of your inner world. Thoughts will rise with memories, plans, and stray feelings. The mind will distract from it; it is natural and born to be in motion. Observe without judgement. Remain the witness, and slowly, your identification with the noise begins to loosen. Life continues to test us with harsh words, insults, and sudden losses. But instead of reacting, pause. Train your mind to respond not from emotion, but from a place of dharm, what is right and not from impulse. Responding with calm clarity is not a weakness; it is a strength. Like a skilled archer who waits for the wind to still before releasing the arrow, the wise wait for their mind to settle before taking action. Let emotions rise, but don't be swept away. Watch them, and then choose your response not from ego or hurt, but from your more profound sense of what is right, your dharm. The Gita says, "Karmanye vadhikaraste, ma phalesu kadachana", you have the right to perform your duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Focus on the action itself rather than the outcome, not becoming attached to results. This is the essence of Karm yog , action born from clarity, not compulsion. The wise one does not seek to escape the world but to elevate it through mindful presence. Silence is not withdrawal, but alignment. Detachment is not denial, but purity of intention. The soul is not void, but a spark of Brahmn, infinite and complete. Practice quieting the mind each day through meditation, not just in silence, but also in the midst of the world's bustle. Whether speaking to a friend, facing criticism, or choosing your daily duties, remain rooted. This is abhyas, practice, combined with vairagya, detachment, twin wings of yog.
