BANGKOK, July 23 (Bernama) -- The Thai government has ordered all provincial authorities to maintain round-the-clock vigilance in high-risk areas and ensure swift evacuation of vulnerable groups amid the threat of Tropical Storm Wipha.
Acting Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, said that the Ministry of Interior places great importance on disaster monitoring, early warning systems, and assistance for affected communities.

With Tropical Storm Wipha already affecting many parts of Thailand, Phumtham expressed concern for residents in high-risk zones and instructed all relevant agencies to coordinate closely and monitor the situation continuously.
"This time, all relevant agencies have demonstrated preparedness in disaster surveillance, prevention, and the rapid delivery of assistance to the public.
"It is particularly commendable that the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has enhanced its mobile phone alert system (Cell Broadcast) and pre-positioned large-scale disaster relief machinery in high-risk areas," he said in a statement posted by the DDPM on its official X account on Wednesday.
Earlier, the minister chaired a meeting of the National Command for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (NCDPM), with Deputy Interior Minister Teerarat Samrejvanich in attendance, along with the Interior Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Anusit Samphantharat, and the DDPM Director-General, Phasakorn Boonyalak.
Phumtham further instructed all provincial authorities to be on 24-hour alert for potential disasters.
"I sincerely thank all agencies for their alertness and cooperation. If a disaster does occur, this level of preparedness will help minimise damage and ensure the safety of our people," he said.

Based on NDRRMC's situational report, 1,438 infrastructure facilities in 10 regions across the country were damaged by the combined effects of the habagat and tropical cyclones Crising (international name: Wipha), Dante (Francisco), and Emong (Co-may). The overall infrastructure damage nationwide has reached P10,594,409,072.32 as of 6 a.m. Friday, the NDRRMC said. The largest portions of the damage were reported in Central Luzon (over P3.8 billion) and the Ilocos Region (P3.1 billion). The Cordillera Administrative Region logged more than P1.2 billion in infrastructure damage, while Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) reported over P1 billion in losses. Two infrastructures in Northern Mindanao were affected by the bad weather, but the damage did not contribute to the total cost. The NDRRMC also reported that 736 road sections and 43 bridges, as well as 55,550 houses, were damaged nationwide. Meanwhile, agriculture losses now amount to P2.2 billion, the agency added. As of Friday morning, the death toll from the recent weather disturbances remains at 37, the NDRRMC said. Meanwhile, the number of injuries rose to 33, up from 22 on Thursday. The NDRRMC said eight persons remain missing as of this writing. A total of 2,272,696 families or 8,263,199 individuals, across the country, were affected. Of these, 27,516 families or 102,060 individuals, are still staying in evacuation centers. Currently, the southwest monsoon continues to bring rain showers to large parts of the country, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa). Pagasa added that the low-pressure area being monitored, which has a 'high' chance of developing into a tropical depression, may enter the Philippine area of responsibility and become the first cyclone in the country this August. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

Water Bombing Slows 105-hectare Bushfire In Mukah

SIBU, July 31 (Bernama) -- Aerial water bombing using a helicopter has successfully slowed the spread of a bushfire covering approximately 105 hectares in Mukah. Mukah Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief Nicholas Belulin said the firefighting operation was carried out by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) using an Mi-171 helicopter equipped with an underslung water bombing system. 'A total of four water bombings were carried out at 3.30 pm, releasing 6,360 litres of water over the affected area,' he said in a statement early this morning. 'This prompt action managed to slow the fire's movement and helped prevent it from spreading to nearby areas,' he added. However, the operation was halted after 42 minutes due to technical issues with the aircraft's system. 'Inspection found that several components need to be replaced, and the spare parts will be delivered by the maintenance team via road tonight,' he said. Nicholas added that yesterday's operation was conducted in hazy conditions, with visibility at around eight kilometres and winds blowing at speeds of 10 to 15 knots. According to him, the bushfire in Mukah was first detected on July 24, and firefighting efforts have been ongoing in stages since then. 'The Fire and Rescue Department has been conducting aerial monitoring and creating fire breaks to prevent the blaze from spreading further into oil palm plantations and nearby settlements.
