Peter Moyanga, Franchisee Multi-store owner for McDonald's, said that he owns 18 McDonald's restaurants in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, and the North West provinces. 'I employ more than 800 people who fall under the age of 18-35. There are advantages when you start a franchise business; this includes there being less risk vs starting a new business as you have something that is already successful.'
Moyanga added that with a franchise, there is trademark and goodwill. 'The experience of business is also not a prerequisite for franchise business. I first had a dream of opening a restaurant while I was a student in 1981 when my uncle took me to a restaurant in Johannesburg. I started to do my research by reading and asking questions about what it means to open a restaurant business. I was determined to be a business owner, and for me, the key to this is passion, control, independence, achievement, growth, creativity, designation, and persistence.'
Moyanga said that when he opened his first McDonald's store, he faced challenges as he had partners that were supposed to come on board, but unfortunately, they let him down.
'Lucky for me, it was Standard Bank that came on to assist me to be able to open McDonald's stores in South Africa. The cost of acquiring a franchise is much higher and more set and less flexible than, for example, when you open your own business. But that's the cost of being there. Franchisors need to be independent in their business. At my stores, we start our people right down at the bottom from high school, and we grow them. Other people in my business started with me 18 to 20 years ago, they're still there,' Moyanga said.
Sheldon Tatchell, the founder of Legends Barber, said that he comes from a community called Eldorado Park in Johannesburg. 'This community, as you know, is inflicted with violent crime, and I learned the skill of barbering in my community at the age of 14 years old. Fast forward to 2011, I was working at a bank; however, I still dreamed of becoming a full-time barber. A dream that was really becoming a reality, but taking baby steps in the process. I can only remember that I had a clipper and a chair, nothing else.'
Tatchell added that he would go on a scooter to customers, driving all over as a mobile barber. 'While riding on a scooter, I had this vision of a mobile bus, being fully equipped with all the steps needed to give haircuts. In 2013, I had a bus that made this services mobile. Two years later, there were 30 Legends shops across the country. We faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, where the beauty industry was closed for four months. Legends Barbers relaunched in June 2020, and we have rebounded with over 75 stores in five countries.'
Lee Langenhoven, Senior Manager, Economic Insights at Standard Bank South Africa, said that he believes that the South African economy is heading in the right direction. 'For the foreseeable future, there is a good chance that there could be another decrease in interest rates following last week's interest rate cut. I do think there could be most likely, probably with a 60% probability, another 25 basis points reduction, which would not necessarily come at the next meeting in July, but could maybe be put on hold until September. But I do think that 25 basis points would be the last one.'
Langenhoven added that if you look at just spending patterns, across the economy, confidence seems to be returning. 'To a certain degree, certainly a little bit better than a year ago. If you look at growth in retail trade sales year on year, this is real, real growth. We see over the last few months that the price of retail sales grew at an excess of 7% towards the end of last year.'

Image: Supplied The Competition Tribunal hearing concerning the acquisition of the longstanding South African company Barloworld by Newco has ignited discussions around empowerment for historically disadvantaged persons as well as the company's impending delisting from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). As the details unfolded on Wednesday, tensions rose over the implications of this significant transaction. Former executives in Barloworld are acquiring Barloworld through Entsha Proprietary Limited while Saudi Zahid Group is the other shareholder in Newco. With Newco intending to bump up its shareholding in the South African company, Barloworld will ultimately be delisted from the JSE. The merging parties through their legal representative told the Competition Tribunal hearing on Wednesday that the delisting of Barloworld was a major condition for the implementation of an Employee Share-Ownership Program (ESOP). After delisting, a women led consortium will also be empowered into the company. 'The merger parties' position is quite clear that if there is no delisting, they're not in a position to implement an ESOP. That being said, we are confident and the likelihood is that there will be a delisting,' the merging parties told the Competition Tribunal hearing. Newco is offering R123.10 per share for Barloworld. The tribunal also heard on Wednesday that Newco now has assurances of about 58% shareholders to raise its stake in the company and delist it. Video Player is loading. For the year ended September 2024, revenue declined by 7% to R42 billion, with operating profit from core activities falling 12.6% to R3.8bn and Ebitda declining 7% to R5bn. Gross debt, however, eased 29% to R7.9bn. The delisting of Barloworld is important for Newco as without it, it will be 'practically difficult for it to implement' transactions overpowering historically disadvantaged persons. To attain this, Newco is pursuing to bump up its stake to 90%. 'So that is why the HDP transactions are conditional on Newco effectively acquiring all of the Barloworld shares and Barloworld being delisted,' said the merging parties legal representative at the hearing. Wiri Gumbie, principal analyst for mergers and acquisitions at the Competition Commission, told the hearing that he was 'hopeful' that Newco will attain the 90% threshold to unlock total control of Barloworld and delist it. However, some concerns emerged that the delisting of Barloworld may not be easy to attain given that some minority shareholders could be disinterested in giving up their interests in the company. 'It's sounding more and more that the chances of the delisting may certainly not happen. The chances of workers benefiting and the women led consortium benefiting is certainly hanging in the balance in this regard and unfortunately, it is a concern now regardless,' the Competition Tribunal heard. Gumbi also revealed that the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) had indicated that it required the securing of black economic empowerment shareholder participation for it to support the transaction. The merging parties had addressed and resolved this, and the PIC is now satisfied that this has been settled under the conditions set out. Newco had included the empowerment provisions for historically disadvantaged persons and the ESOP after discussions with the PIC. Remaining shareholders that elect not to sell their shares then the requirement to do an ESOP will risk further dilution of their minority stakes. 'If there are minority shareholders that remain on the list and there needs to be, for example, an issuance of new shares or some other major transaction to implement those, there would presumably be some kind of shareholder approvals and and basically shareholder votes required and on such matters,' said the merging parties legal counsel. 'It may well be that if the transaction is implemented by way of an issuance of new shares, they may be affected because they would be effectively a dilution of their shares.' BUSINESS REPORT

Although business confidence is higher since the beginning of 2025 compared to the same seven months in 2024, US tariffs can change all that. Business confidence increased in July, but the 30% US tariff will put it under pressure once the fallout starts as orders dry up and local companies have to cut expenses and staff. According to the SACCI Business Confidence Index (BCI), the business climate improved over the short-term between June and July, as well as the medium-term from July 2024 to July 2025. In the short-term, 11 of the 14 sub-indices either remained unchanged or reflected a positive business climate, while over the medium-term, 10 sub-indices continued to imply an improved business climate. Over the year to July 2025, business confidence increased by 7.6 index points and by 3.5 index points between June and July 2025. The average for the BCI in the first seven months of 2025 was 118.6, 7.7 index points higher than the 110.9 for the corresponding period in 2024. The most positive short-term impact on business sentiment in July were made by an increase in new vehicles sold, increasing manufacturing output, the increasing global price of gold and platinum and lower inflation. Reduced volumes of merchandise imports, fewer overseas tourists and the decreased real value of building plans passed were signs of a weakening business climate. The medium-term (year-to-year) improved business environment was evident from increasing inward tourists, rising sales of new vehicles, lower inflation and higher world prices for precious metals. ALSO READ: Business confidence tanks in second quarter due to pessimism about trading conditions Reduced export volumes only negative from year ago Reduced volumes of merchandise exports were the only notable negative impact on the business environment from a year ago. Statistics for the automotive sector already showed a decrease in exports of about 80%. Richard Downing, economist at SACCI, says more uncertainty for South Africa could start weighing on economic activity as deadlines for additional US tariffs expire without substantial permanent agreements and progress. 'Economic growth could improve if trade negotiations lead to a more predictable framework and rational tariffs. Negotiations should support business and investor confidence, predictability and sustainability prior to other considerations. 'The imposition of a general US tariff of 30% on exports from South Africa could have unintended and austere consequences for the South African economy and for longer-term business relations. The categories of exports and the sectors affected will also play a role in how it affects economic growth and employment in the country.' ALSO READ: US tariffs: SA sends new proposal but no changes to laws US tariffs must be sorted out to grow the economy Downing says given South Africa's open economy, with 32% of output being exported, it remains obligatory that all global economic and business relationships be fostered. He points out that SACCI is concerned that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts South Africa's real economic growth at 1% for this year and 1.3% for 2026, while the South Africa Reserve Bank, at its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting at the end of July forecast growth of 0.9% for this year and for 2026. 'With such subdued economic performance, it becomes important that all efforts should be taken to enhance positive foreign trade relations, including the US, especially with the possibilities of revisiting the provisions of the Agoa Agreement. 'Although local business confidence has at least stabilised, it is important that it returns to levels achieved earlier in the year as the government of national unity took shape. 'The downside risks of potential or real higher trade tariffs to the economy, elevated uncertainty and geopolitical tensions that persist should make way by restoring confidence, predictability and sustainability of economic performance.'
