Karnataka CM Announces Financial Relief And Investigation Following Fatal RCB Victory Celebration Crush
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has declared the deadly crowd crush during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations an "unforeseen catastrophe" while announcing immediate relief measures and launching an official investigation. The tragedy at Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and left numerous others injured when massive crowds gathered to celebrate the team's championship win.
During a media briefing, Siddaramaiah revealed that the Karnataka State Cricket Association, not the state government, had organized the stadium event. He emphasized the unprecedented nature of the crowd turnout, explaining that while the venue's maximum capacity is 35,000 spectators, an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 people converged on the location. The Chief Minister noted a stark contrast with another large gathering at Vidhana Soudha, where approximately 100,000 people assembled without incident.
"Nobody anticipated this outcome, including the Cricket Association," Siddaramaiah stated, while referencing similar incidents that have occurred elsewhere, including at religious gatherings like the Kumbh Mela. He clarified that his comparison was not intended to minimize the current tragedy.
The Chief Minister announced comprehensive support measures for affected families, including Rs 10 lakh compensation for each victim's relatives and complimentary medical care for all injured individuals. He confirmed that a Deputy Commissioner-level investigation has been initiated to examine the circumstances leading to the disaster.
Siddaramiah personally visited Bowring and Vaidehi hospitals to meet with the injured and their families, providing updates on their condition. "I consulted with medical staff. All injured persons are now stable," he reported during his press conference.
Reflecting on the incident's impact, the Chief Minister posted on social media that "A moment of celebration has been overshadowed by grief," expressing his condolences to the bereaved families. He revealed that the government had previously declined requests for a comprehensive victory parade specifically due to safety concerns about crowd management.
The incident unfolded Wednesday evening as enthusiastic supporters gathered outside the stadium to commemorate RCB's long-awaited IPL championship victory. Despite prior awareness of potential overcrowding issues, the massive turnout created dangerous conditions that ultimately resulted in the fatal crush and multiple serious injuries.

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court on Friday granted relief to CLAT-PG candidates over alleged discrepancies in the answer key and directed the consortium of NLUs to declare results soon. A bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela's decision came over the plea of students in relation to a couple of answers in the key. The court, however, rejected the objection with respect to the declared answer to a third question, and asked the consortium of national law universities (NLUs) to accordingly award marks to the candidates. The court passed the order while deciding three pleas seeking rectification of errors in the final answer key of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)-PG 2025. The bench's verdict highlighted the issue of a high fee of Rs 1,000 charged by the consortium per question for raising the objection to the provisional answer key, observing there ought to be a 'fine balance' between the concerns of the candidates and the institutions. While comparing the fee charged for objected questions by other organisations, the fees sought by the consortium 'appeared to be excessive and disproportionate' but the consortium's concern that it was required to keep frivolous individuals and coaching institutes at bay also did not appear to be 'fanciful or imaginative', it added. The bench, however, expected the consortium to take heed of its observations and take appropriate steps to 'avoid such excessive fee in the next examinations'. 'It may be advisable for the consortium to place this issue before the committee headed by Justice G. Raghuram (retd) for his valuable opinion which may be adhered to by it,' the bench said. The court ruled on the correctness of the answers in the answer key after considering each question and the submissions made by the counsel for the petitioners and the consortium. CLAT determines admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate law courses in national law universities in the country. CLAT PG 2025 was held on December 1, 2024. Multiple pleas were filed in different high courts alleging several questions in the exam were wrong. On February 6, the Supreme Court transferred all the petitions over the issue to the Delhi High Court for a 'consistent adjudication'. The top court passed the direction on the transfer petitions of the consortium.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased while slamming the organisers of the event. 'It is very unfortunate. This is a negative side of popularity. People are crazy for cricketers. The organisers should have planned it better. My deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. I wish early recovery of the injured," Saikia told news agency PTI. 'When one organises a victory celebration of this magnitude, proper precautions, safety and security measures need to be taken. There have been some lapses somewhere. After such a glorious ending to the IPL, this has been an anti-climax," he added. The RCB squad arrived in Bengaluru on Wednesday morning before heading to Vidhana Soudha where they were felicitated by Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar. They then headed to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to continue their victory celebrations where fans had gathered to witness a musical performance before the players including RCB captain Rajat Patidar and Kohli delivered speeches.
