Knicks Urged to Make Major Offseason Move Involving Mikal Bridges

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Knicks' dream of winning the NBA title this season is over. New York was eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in six games within the Eastern Conference Finals, ending the playoff run they were on. As New York enters the offseason, the team has multiple questions to answer. There have been reports about the front office potentially looking to move on from Karl-Anthony Towns or other key players. More NBA news: Knicks Staff Reportedly Losing Patience With Karl-Anthony Towns But another big storyline from the offseason is what the team will do with forward Mikal Bridges. Bridges will be eligible for a four-year, $156 million extension before next season. New York paid a heavy price to land Bridges last offseason, and could be motivated by that to get a deal done. Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report has predicted that the Knicks will indeed extend Bridges to a massive deal. "After his star turn with the Brooklyn Nets, Mikal Bridges needed time to adjust to being a role player again on the Knicks. He's become a vital cog for them on both sides of the ball in the playoffs, though. New York is all-in with its core, and Bridges has just one year left in the deal. This offseason, the Knicks figure to do what they can to sign him to an extension." NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 12: Mikal Bridges #25 of the New York Knicks celebrates his shot against the Boston Celtics in Game Four of the Eastern Conference Second Round NBA Playoffs at Madison Square Garden on May 12, 2025 in New York City. More PhotoFor the season, Bridges averaged 17.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 0.9 steals per game. Bridges gave this team another wing forward to use, but there were times when he lacked the physicality needed to win games. More NBA news: Rick Carlisle Doesn't Hold Back on Pacers-Thunder NBA Finals Matchup Due to the heavy financial strain on the Knicks' salary cap, it could see the team potentially move on from one of the stars. Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, Towns, and Bridges would all have massive contracts on the books. With the new CBA in place, that could drastically impact how New York builds a contending team around the stars. But if the team were to move off one of those contracts, assuming they do extend Bridges, the Knicks could split that money up to build strong depth. The biggest weakness on the Knicks' roster this season was depth, and it showed in the postseason. Indiana was able to wear out New York throughout the series, so this will likely be a priority as the offseason unfolds. Rare NBA Finals Matchup Set After Nearly 20-Year Wait

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The 2025 NBA Finals are set. More NBA news: Rick Carlisle Doesn't Hold Back on Pacers-Thunder NBA Finals Matchup The Oklahoma City Thunder will host the Indiana Pacers for a chance to be crowned NBA champions. The Thunder and Pacers have proven to be two of the elite teams throughout the regular season, especially in the second half of the season and, more notably, in the playoffs. The Thunder and Pacers head into the NBA Finals each sporting a 12-4 postseason record, both chasing a historic first championship for their respective franchises. From a pure basketball perspective, this matchup promises plenty of intrigue, but let's be honest — almost no one saw this coming. It wasn't just fans who were caught off guard. The league itself didn't anticipate this outcome. For the first time in nearly 20 years, neither of the teams playing in the Finals appeared on the NBA's Christmas Day slate — a clear sign of just how unexpected this Finals showdown truly is. Photo byFor the first time since 2007, the NBA Finals will feature two teams who didn't play on Christmas Day, per @tomhaberstroh. Kinda crazy when you think about it. — Legion Hoops (@LegionHoops) June 1, 2025 The tradition of playing on Christmas Day for the NBA is a prestigious one. It's one of the very first games announced on the schedule, and it features five games throughout the day. The 10 teams featured are typically viewed as the league's elite — organizations and players the NBA holds in especially high regard. Participation often reflects both on-court success and market appeal, signaling who the league expects to be front and center on the biggest stages. These games are typically marquee matchups, attracting significant viewership and are often seen as a major stage for players and teams. By the looks of it, the NBA did not hold the Pacers or the Thunder in that regard. The fact that neither team had a Christmas Day game is a bit jarring. The Pacers are a team that made it to the Eastern Conference Finals and proved to be a formidable team. As for the Thunder, their absence from the Christmas Day schedule made no sense. Oklahoma City was coming off a season in which they locked up the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference and were considered one of the top teams to win and make the Finals this season. Not only is that the case, but they also had Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on their side, one of the favorites to win the MVP at the time, and he went on to win it this season. Both teams have proved to be elite, and these NBA Finals should be an entertaining one. Reggie Miller ‘claiming' Charles Oakley for Pacers as Knicks great still at odds with MSG

If the Knicks don't want Charles Oakley, Reggie Miller is extending an invitation. Miller posted an old photo of himself and Oakley on his Instagram story Sunday, with the caption, 'Y'all don't want this man in your building, we claiming him!! Charles you always welcome in Da Fieldhouse!!' Oakley, who spent 10 of his 19 seasons in the NBA with the Knicks, was famously banned from Madison Square Garden in 2017 by owner James Dolan after an altercation with security guards, and hasn't been back since. 3 Reggie Miller posted a photo of him and Charles Oakley on his Instagram Story. Instagram/Reggie Miller He never played for Miller's Pacers, and it seems unlikely that he'll take the Hall of Famer up on his invite. Though he's suing Dolan and MSG, Oakley used the word 'we' when referring to the Knicks in a recent interview with The Post's Howie Kussoy. 'I see a lot of energy like when we played, especially the Villanova guys,' Oakley said on May 21, ahead of the start of the conference finals. 'OG [Anunoby], he's just a different animal. [Mikal] Bridges is smooth, and [Jalen] Brunson, he's not scared of the moment.' 3 Charles Oakley (r.) with his wife Angela (l.) Getty Images The Knicks extended something like an olive branch to Oakley a few days later, as The Post's Jared Schwartz reported the team would have Oakley back at The Garden if he dropped the lawsuit. His ban is no longer a factor — Oakley can buy a ticket and attend games already. But without the lawsuit, he would be invited back, given seats and shown on the jumbotron along with all the other Knicks legends who are regularly there. Oakley's case for assault and battery claims against Dolan and The Garden has twice been dismissed, but was reinstated by an appeals court in September. 3 Reggie Miller celebrates the Pacers' Game 6 win over the Knicks on May 31, 2025. Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images The 61-year-old Oakley was a fan favorite during his playing carer. 'That's up to two people, commissioner [Adam Silver] and the guy who owns the team [Dolan], but there's a lot of things you can't control in life,' Oakley told Kussoy. 'I played there for 10 years, the fans let me know [how they felt] when I played there, and I tried to show them love every time I could. Win or lose, I showed that I was willing to fight.'
