ON MEETING WITH TRUMP AND EUROPEAN LEADERS:
"I would like to thank President Trump for this meeting. It was the best of our meetings - and that is important. In addition to the fact that we discussed many issues, it was a long and detailed conversation.
"Today was an important step — a demonstration of true unity between Europe and the United States. The leaders personally came to support Ukraine and to discuss everything that brings us closer to real peace and a reliable security architecture that will protect Ukraine and all of Europe."
ON DISCUSSION OF UKRAINE'S TERRITORY:
"The issue of territory - I had a long conversation about it with a map of Ukraine.
"I was even able to show many things on the map to all of our American colleagues ... I even debated a bit about the percentages shown on the map, because I know very well the actual percentages of temporarily occupied territories. But nevertheless, it wasn't an argument - it was truly a warm, good, substantive conversation.

ON SECURITY GUARANTEES:
"We talked about security guarantees. This is the key issue - the starting point for ending the war.
"It is important that the United States of America is sending a clear signal that they will be among the countries that will help, coordinate, and also participate in providing security guarantees. I believe this is a major step forward. I can't yet say how everything will unfold, all the details, but it's already important that there is political will and political decisions.
"Security guarantees will probably be 'unpacked' by our partners, and more and more details will emerge. All of this will somehow be formalised on paper within the next week to 10 days.
"(A part of security guarantees) is the weapons package — a package of American weapons that we currently don't have. This includes, above all, aircraft, air defence systems, and so on.
"There indeed is a package with our (Ukrainian) proposals worth $90 billion.
"And we have agreements with the U.S. president that when our export opens, they will buy Ukrainian drones. This is important for us."
WHAT'S NEXT, POSSIBLE MEETINGS WITH RUSSIA:
"After our joint meeting and coordination on how we will work on security guarantees, the president of the United States contacted the Russian side, and they discussed what kind of diplomatic assurances might be possible. Russia proposed first a bilateral meeting between Ukraine and Russia, and then a trilateral one.
"We are ready for any formats at the level of leaders, because only at the level of leaders can all these complex and painful issues be resolved, the most important and the most painful for us. I confirmed — and all European leaders supported me — that we are ready for a bilateral meeting with Putin. And after that, I expect a trilateral meeting but that all will depend on how the bilateral meeting goes." REUTERS

BEIJING - China will stage a massive military parade next month involving tens of thousands of people in the heart of Beijing to commemorate 80 years since the end of World War Two following the surrender of Japan. Hundreds of aircraft including fighter jets and bombers as well as ground equipment, some of which have never been seen in public before, will be featured in the parade, military officials said at a press conference. The September 3 parade, the second such procession since 2015 to observe the formal surrender of Japanese forces in 1945, will be a show of China's military strength as some of its neighbours and Western nations look on with concern over the projection of power by the People's Liberation Army in recent years. The 70-minute-long "Victory Day" parade, comprising 45 contingents of troops will be surveyed by President Xi Jinping at Tiananmen Square alongside a number of foreign leaders and dignitaries including Russian President Vladimir Putin, who also attended the 2015 parade. Authorities have stepped up security in downtown Beijing since early August when the first large-scale parade rehearsal was held, setting up checkpoints, diverting road traffic and shutting shopping malls and office buildings. WASHINGTON – Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that the US is satisfied with the current tariff arrangement with China, a signal the Trump administration is looking to keep ties calm before a trade truce expires in November. When asked in a Fox News interview when progress in negotiations would be seen and if the US needed a trade agreement because of how tariffs were going, Mr Bessent said that 'we're very happy' with the tariff situation with China. 'I think right now the status quo is working pretty well,' he said. 'China is the biggest revenue line in the tariff income – so if it's not broken , don't fix it,' he said in the interview on Aug 19 . 'We have had very good talks with China. I imagine we'll be seeing them again before November.' Mr Bessent's remarks indicate that an easing of tensions between the two sides remains in place, potentially creating an opening for US President Donald Trump to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The Trump administration has generally dialed down its confrontational tone with Beijing recently to get a summit with Mr Xi and a trade deal. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said a meeting between the two leaders is likely, though no date has been set. Last week, Mr Trump extended a pause on higher tariffs on Chinese goods for another 90 days into early November, a move that stabilised trade ties between the world's two largest economies. That was possible because the US and China agreed to reduce tit-for-tat tariff hikes and ease export restrictions on rare earth magnets and certain technologies. S&P Global Ratings has said revenues from Mr Trump's tariffs would help soften the blow to the US' fiscal health from the president's tax cuts, enabling it to maintain its current credit grade. Still, the trade dispute with China is causing some pain for the US. Mr Caleb Ragland, president of the American Soybean Association, said in a letter to Mr Trump dated Aug 19 that American soybean farmers are near a 'trade and financial precipice' and cannot survive a prolonged trade war. And in a move that's likely to irk China, the Trump administration is set to step up scrutiny of imports of steel, copper, lithium and other materials from the world's No. 2 economy to enforce a US ban on goods allegedly made with forced labour in the country's Xinjiang region. The plan dovetails with Mr Trump's broader trade goals, given he wants to lower the US trade deficit with China and put pressure on Beijing to curb shipments of fentanyl and precursor chemicals. Earlier in August Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, saying the hike was punishment for India's purchases of discounted oil from Russia, which he argues helps fund President Vladimir Putin's war against Ukraine. There's been concern that the US may also target other nations – China is the largest overall buyer of Moscow's crude – but so far India has been the only major economy to be hit with such 'secondary tariffs'. Mr Bessent defended the administration's lack of secondary tariffs on China in an interview with told CNBC, saying India only ramped up its purchases after the Kremlin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. PALMERSTON NORTH, New Zealand - A military court sentenced a New Zealand soldier on Aug 20 to two years' detention for attempted espionage for a foreign power. The soldier, whose name has been suppressed, admitted to attempted espionage, accessing a computer system for a dishonest purpose and knowingly possessing an objectionable publication. The court martial at Linton Military Camp near Palmerston North heard the soldier gave military base maps and photographs to an undercover officer posing as an agent for the foreign nation. During the investigation he was found to have copies of a livestreamed video of the March 2019 killing of 51 worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch by white supremacist Brenton Tarrant. The soldier became a person of interest in the aftermath of the Christchurch attack as police cracked down on right-wing extremist groups, of which he was a member, the court heard. While monitoring him, the New Zealand government became aware he had 'made contact with a third party, indicating that he was a soldier who was wanting to defect', according to an agreed summary read out by the prosecution. The military court has permanently suppressed the identity of the foreign nation. It was the first spying conviction in New Zealand's history. The soldier was arrested in December 2019, and had spent all but six days since then under what the New Zealand Defence Force called open arrest. He was required to live on an army base in a military house, and was subject to a curfew. The soldier was suspended on full pay, earning more than US$230,000 (S$295,806) since his arrest. During that time he married his wife and had two children. His wife is expecting a third child. AFP
