Ex-YSRCP Minister Bought Gold Using Money From Liquor Scam: Nara Lokesh

NDTV3 days ago
Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh on Thursday levelled serious allegations against former minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, alleging that gold worth ₹400 crore was purchased with money acquired through the state's multi-crore liquor scam by a firm linked to the latter.
Mr Lokesh alleged that funds from Adan Distilleries were funnelled into a construction company owned by Mr Peddireddi called PLR Constructions.
"Why would a liquor company buy Rs 400 crore worth of gold? Does it make any sense? Is that a raw material?" Mr Lokesh said at a press conference.
The allegations come amidst an ongoing investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the alleged Andhra Pradesh liquor scam, which reportedly occurred during the previous YSRCP government's tenure (2019-2024).
The SIT has been conducting raids and has already seized significant amounts of cash, including ₹11 crore from a farmhouse in Hyderabad, believed to be linked to the scam.
The probe suggests that distilleries paid large kickbacks for preferential treatment and contracts, causing substantial losses to the state. The investigation is also looking into a complex network of transactions through shell companies, with the alleged kickbacks amounting to thousands of crores.
During the conference, Mr Lokesh "dared" Mr Reddy to deny the allegations. "Money came to Mr Peddireddi's company from Adan Distilleries. I am challenging Peddireddi Ramachandra Reddy. If he has the guts, let Peddireddi deny it," he said.
The accusations are the latest in a series of exchanges between the two political leaders. The current government has been vocal about its intentions to hold the previous administration accountable for alleged corruption, and the SIT's investigation into the liquor scam is a key part of this effort.
There was no immediate reaction from Mr Reddy on the allegations but earlier, he had dismissed Mr Lokesh's claims, calling them "foolish". The political fallout from these new claims is expected to escalate as the investigation continues.

Dharmasthala case: SIT urged to deploy GPR at locations identified by witness

Mangaluru: Advocate Manjunath N, legal counsel for Sujatha Bhat, mother of Ananya Bhat, a medical student who allegedly disappeared while she was in Dharmasthala in 2003, has requested the use of advanced Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) at locations already identified by the complainant witness. These locations have been excavated in connection with the alleged Dharmasthala mass burial case. "It is learnt that skeletal remains were uncovered at some of the locations identified by the complainant witness. He said he left Dharmasthala in 2014. The region experiences heavy rainfall, leading to a high possibility of soil shifting and accumulation from one place to another," the advocate said in a release. "Since considerable changes have occurred in the forest area over approximately 11 years, there is a high probability that the landmarks the witness identified from memory may have changed or shifted. Therefore, as we previously petitioned on July 29, we request that GPR units, which are comparable in size to machines used for clearing grass and weeds and can be operated by a small team, be deployed to detect skeletal remains at the already excavated locations and in the surrounding areas," he stated. "Many experts anticipate that the SIT, led by Pronab Mohanty, will implement GPR technology. We have faith and confidence that the Karnataka govt and chief minister Siddaramaiah will support the SIT in deploying GPRs," the advocate added. The SIT began its field investigation into the case on July 28 by mapping 13 alleged burial sites, based on the testimony of the complainant witness, and started searching the area from the next day. Till Saturday, the SIT, in the presence of Puttur assistant commissioner Stella Varghese, searched around 10 locations. Security personnel have been deployed in the area. Demand for transparent investigation The Mangaluru unit of All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) has demanded an impartial, transparent, and time-bound investigation into the matter by the SIT. "These are not isolated crimes but raise serious questions about the functioning of the law enforcement system," said Vinay Chandra, convenor, AIDSO Mangaluru unit. Dharmasthala is a place founded on truth: Scholar "Attempts are being made by mischief-makers to malign the sanctity of Dharmasthala by spreading baseless allegations and misinformation. These unauthorised accusations have deeply hurt countless devotees," said Daivajna Somayaji, a senior scholar. During his visit to Dharmasthala on Sunday, he told reporters, "Dharmasthala is a sacred place rooted in truth, dharma, justice, and ethics." PM to open Metro line to IT corridor on Aug 10

Bengaluru: Missing the original deadline by two-and-a-half years, Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line — from RV Road in Jayanagar to tech hub on Hosur Road, offering a congestion-free commute for lakhs of tech workers — will be inaugurated by PM Modi on Aug 10. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Commercial operations are likely from Aug 11. Union minister of housing and urban affairs Manohar Lal Khattar announced the launch date on X. On the same day, Modi will lay the foundation for Phase III of Namma Metro project, which proposes 45km lines at a cost of Rs 15,611 crore, the post added. Though infrastructure was ready for over two years for the 19km yellow line built by BMRCL at a cost of Rs 7,000 crore, the inauguration of this stretch, having missed revised deadlines multiple times, was further delayed due to shortage of coaches. BMRCL recently set Aug 15 as the revised target to open the line with just three trainsets. After receiving safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety to open the new line connecting Electronics City, BMRCL approached the state govt. In 2023, ahead of the Karnataka assembly elections, Modi inaugurated the extended Purple Line from KR Pura to Whitefield. Later, three Namma Metro projects — two Purple Line stretches, the Green Line extension towards Tumakuru, and the Ragigudda–Silk Board double-decker flyover—were opened without fanfare. Although the Centre sanctioned Orange Line in 2024, the state govt's plan for a double-decker flyover delayed tendering. BMRCL is expected to float tenders by year-end. The agency is finalising the design plan, while environmental and social impact consultations are in progress, with reports likely to be published between Oct and Nov.

‘Punjab has sent no proposal for solar parks under central scheme in last 5 yrs'

Bathinda: Even as 18 solar parks were developed in several states under the central scheme of 'development of solar parks and ultra-mega solar power projects', the Punjab govt did not send any proposal for the development of a solar park under the scheme in the last five years. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This was revealed by Union minister of state for new and renewable energy and power, Shripad Yesso Naik, in a written reply in Lok Sabha on Wednesday in response to a question by Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal. The development of solar parks and ultra-mega solar power projects aims to accelerate large-scale solar power generation by facilitating the development of solar parks and ultra-mega solar power projects. These parks provide a platform for developers to set up solar projects with shared infrastructure, including land, transmission lines, and other necessary facilities, reducing costs and speeding up project completion. The country in the past increased maximum renewable energy under solar energy to achieve its target of 450 GW renewable energy by 2030 as per its nationally determined contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement. After the scheme was launched in Dec 2014 to accelerate large-scale solar power generation and support the country's renewable energy goals, 50 solar parks with a total capacity of 37,990 MW were sanctioned across 12 states, while 18 with 10,856 MW were developed. As per the minister, 18 projects were developed in nine states with a capacity of 10,856 MW, with a maximum of four projects each in MP and Rajasthan. Under the project, central financial assistance (CFA) of Rs 3,661.93 crore was released to various states in the last five years under the 'development of solar parks and ultra-mega solar power projects', with a maximum of Rs 1,116.4 crore to Gujarat, even as only one solar park with 700 MW was developed there. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Harsimrat Kaur asked for details of the number of solar parks set up under the 'development of solar parks and ultra mega power projects' in the country, including Punjab; the details of funds allocated and utilised by the different states under the said scheme since its inception; whether the Union govt received any application/financial assistance proposal for the development of a solar park from the state govt of Punjab under this scheme during the last five years; and the reasons behind the delay in the implementation of the said proposal, if any, in Punjab.
