Ryan Gosling to star in new standalone "Star Wars" movie

CBS News18-04-2025

After his scene-stealing performance in "Barbie," actor Ryan Gosling is entering a galaxy far, far away.
LucasFilm announced Friday the next installment of the "
Star Wars
" franchise, "Star Wars: Starfighter" with Gosling will hit theaters in May 2027. Shawn Levy will direct the film.
Appearing on stage before a lightsaber-waving crowd at Makuhari Messe center outside Tokyo, Japan, on Friday, Gosling shared a photo of his childhood bedsheets, plastered with illustrations from the space epic created by George Lucas.
"I guess I was dreaming about '
Star Wars
' even before I saw the film," he said.
Levy, who also directed "Deadpool & Wolverine," told the crowd that the new movie will not be a prequel or a sequel in the famous franchise but a new standalone adventure with new characters set several years after 2019's "Star Wars: Episode IX -- The Rise of Skywalker." Filming starts later this year, he said.
"I can't say much about it because I understand the rules," he added.
Only the title was shown on a giant screen, although that was enough for the crowd to burst into cheers.
Wearing a baseball hat with the slogan "Never Tell Me The Odds", Gosling said: "I think it's just exactly the advice that we need as we embark on this journey."
The event, called Star Wars Celebration, which runs through Sunday, is full of "Star Wars"-themed merchandise including T-shirts, toys, books, manga comics, AC chargers, cellphone covers, autographs, posters and more.
The Lego booth featured a man wearing the ominous black mask and cloak of Darth Vader, made out of Legos. The deep-breathing villain also appeared as traditional Japanese lacquerware decorating earphones in a limited edition of 10, each selling for 990,000 yen ($7,000). Darth Vader T-shirts were more affordable at 8,000 yen ($56).
"It makes me so happy to think everyone here loves 'Star Wars,'" said Yoshiki Takahashi, 26, who was holding a remote-controlled R2-D2 miniature robot.
"I love the directing, the sound of the gun and the lightsaber, but above all the story, with great fight scenes and, of course, human drama," he added.
Another Japanese man, who said he goes only by Hiro, was dressed as the "Star Wars" character Mandalorian, in a detailed costume he made himself, complete with a plastic sword and armor.
Also present were "Star Wars" fans from around the world, including a robed Raul Herrera, a computer science teacher from Chile, who was there with friends.
"All of them," said Herrera, when asked which 'Star Wars' films he'd seen. "The sense of commitment of the characters, I really like it."
With offshoot stories spanning generations and literally the cosmos, "Star Wars" is one of the highest-grossing franchises of all time since its 1977 debut, starring
Mark Hamill
as Luke Skywalker.

Gavin Newsom Recasts Trump as Iconic ‘Star Wars' Villain

California Governor Gavin Newsom mocked President Donald Trump in a series of TikToks comparing him to a Star Wars villain. Newsom's press office took to X on Tuesday to share two TikToks of what appeared to be the AI-generated voice of Star Wars antagonist Emperor Palpatine, who was played by Ian McDiarmid, reading two of Trump's Truth Social posts. Both posts denounced the Los Angeles protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with the president calling them 'lawless riots.' The first video showcased one of the president's Truth Social posts from Sunday with clips of Stormtroopers and music from the film franchise playing in the background. The caption read: 'A ONCE GREAT AMERICAN CITY HAS BEEN OCCUPIED!' 'Order will be restored, the illegals will be expelled, and Los Angeles will be set free,' said the AI Emperor, dictating the president's post. Another video with the caption 'LOS ANGELES WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY OBLITERATED!' had a similar structure, this time with one of Trump's Truth Social posts from Monday. 'The very incompetent 'Governor,' Gavin Newscum, and 'Mayor,' Karen Bass, should be saying, 'THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP, YOU ARE SO WONDERFUL. WE WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT YOU, SIR,'' said Palpatine's voice, as Star Wars music blared in the background. Newsom and Trump have been locked in this back-and-forth trading of insults since Saturday, when the president announced that he would be deploying the National Guard to L.A. to quash anti-ICE protests. The California governor wrote on X that 'the federal government is sowing chaos so they can have an excuse to escalate. That is not the way any civilized country behaves.' Trump and the Governor continued to go at it both online and in interviews, with the president even suggesting on Monday that his border czar, Tom Homan, should arrest Newsom. 'I like Gavin, he's a nice guy, but he's grossly incompetent. Everyone knows that,' Trump said. Trump is known for posting AI-generated photos and videos on his own social media accounts, as well as the White House's accounts. A notable example was a Studio Ghibli-style AI cartoon of a crying woman being handcuffed by an ICE officer, which was posted on the White House's official X account back in March. Trump also sparked outrage when he posted an AI-edited photo of him as the Pope on Truth Social days before the papal conclave convened to deliberate on who to name the new pope following Pope Francis' death in April.

ABOUT BARBIE™ Barbie was founded in 1959 by Ruth Handler, a mother and visionary entrepreneur, whose inspiration for Barbie came from watching her daughter project her dreams and aspirations onto paper dolls. Recognizing a gap in the market, which only offered baby dolls for girls to imagine themselves as caregivers, Ruth invented the fashion doll category with a three-dimensional doll that girls could use to imagine their future selves. Ruth's philosophy behind Barbie was that through the doll a little girl could be anything she wanted to be and that she has choices. Over the brand's 60 years, Barbie has empowered girls to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. Tears, tattoos, Cartier watches: fan frenzy at BTS army discharge

South Korea's Yeoncheon county, just kilometres from the heavily fortified border with the nuclear-armed North, is best known for its honey. But on Wednesday, it was flooded with K-pop supergroup BTS fans. Despite pleas from the band's agency HYBE to stay away from the area where members Jimin and Jungkook were being released from mandatory military service, a screaming, weeping frenzy ensued early Wednesday. Decked out in the band's signature purple, and some even sporting BTS tattoos, fans began gathering at 3 am. Some had flown in from Brazil and Indonesia, eager to catch the first glimpse of the pair after their discharge. As the two BTS stars emerged, fans screamed, cried and hugged each other. Wu Ruohan, an 18-year-old Chinese fan, said this was her "dream come true". Their release means that six of the seven members of BTS have now finished their service. The final member -- SUGA -- is due out on June 21, bringing the group one step closer to reunion and new music. Security moved the cordons to keep fans at bay as Jimin and Jungkook arrived, dressed in camouflage military uniforms, AFP journalists saw. The K-pop idols, who have spent 18 months on the frontline with North Korea serving in the 5th Infantry Division Artillery Brigade, thanked the crowd for waiting for them. "It's been a while since I've been in front of a camera, and I'm a bit embarrassed because I didn't even put on makeup," said Jungkook, who looked slightly flustered at the mass gathering. Jimin confessed they had gone for a 5 am jog, hoping to look their best. The pair bowed to fans and media before getting into a black minivan and driving off, promising to speak on their superfan platform WeVerse later. - 'Not real fans'? - Online, fans bickered about whether it was right to turn up at the bases, against requests from HYBE and BTS. Before they enlisted, the BTS members had knelt during a live broadcast to earnestly entreat their fans not to show up at army bases as they entered military life. "They're not real fans, the boys even knelt and begged for them to not come," one social media user wrote, sharing screenshots of those at the scene, in a seeming effort to shame them. Experts have said the members will likely have a "visual adjustment period" of a few months, while they grow out their military buzz cuts and hone their K-pop look. Even so, fashion enthusiasts were looking for any scraps of personality amid their military attire, seizing on the watch worn by member V who was discharged Tuesday. His Cartier piece was estimated to be worth around 20 million won ($14,649). In contrast, his bandmate RM wore an affordable Casio. But to the disappointment of online sleuths, neither Jimin nor Jungkook wore a watch on Wednesday. On Friday, the seven-member group celebrates the 12th anniversary of its debut, known as FESTA. Fans from around the world are pouring into South Korea for the occasion. On Wednesday, thousands of people were seen outside HYBE's headquarters in downtown Seoul waiting for vans carrying the stars to arrive. While waiting to see their idols, fans sang along to BTS songs and chanted 'Jimin, Jungkook,' as multiple local broadcasters aired the scene live. Local media were seemingly taken aback by the huge interest in the releases and called the reunion a "revival of the K-pop industry". aw-hs-ceb/lb
