Early Cancer Symptoms Like Fatigue and Body Pain That Young Adults Should Not Ignore
Young adults must become aware of these risks and symptoms not just for their own health, but to educate future generations
Recent data from the national cancer registry reveals a sharp increase in cancer incidence compared to a decade ago, with a noticeable shift toward younger populations. While many cancers are now detected early through robust screening programs, symptoms can often be so subtle or misleading that patients end up consulting an oncologist only at advanced or near-terminal stages.
Unfortunately, the general public still lacks awareness about key warning signs of cancer. Many symptoms overlap with more common and benign health issues, which leads to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Gopinath, Consultant, Hemato-Oncology at MGM Cancer Institute, Chennai, shares a telling case, 'We recently treated a young, fitness-conscious man who experienced back pain and fatigue for about a month. He attributed these symptoms to gym workouts or vitamin D deficiency. However, when he developed persistent fevers, he came to us. Imaging revealed he had stage IV lymphoma. He subsequently underwent intensive chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant. Traditionally, we don't suspect cancer in young adults, but evolving lifestyle patterns have increased their risk. A simple blood test and earlier consultation with his primary physician could have led to an earlier diagnosis, potentially reducing the duration and intensity of treatment."
It's crucial, especially for women, to learn and regularly perform breast self-examinations and to undergo routine mammograms. The rising incidence of breast cancer is closely linked to high-fat diets, delayed pregnancies, and shorter durations of breastfeeding, all of which are influenced by changing lifestyles and work cultures.
In addition, human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and related cancers are increasingly being diagnosed in younger individuals, often due to early sexual activity and multiple sexual partners. This prolongs the duration of HPV exposure, making cervical cancer during pregnancy a more common scenario today.
Young adults must become aware of these risks and symptoms not just for their own health, but to educate future generations. Embracing a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity, routine health checkups, and preventive vaccinations can significantly reduce cancer risk. The goal must be twofold: lowering cancer incidence and ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment.

WHO Alert: Chikungunya Virus Back After 20 Years, 560 Crore People At Risk
Last Updated: Chikungunya resurfaces after 2 decades, with WHO warning millions across Asia and Europe now being at risk In 2005, Chikungunya wreaked havoc across several countries, beginning in the Indian Ocean region and eventually affecting over half a million people. After seemingly fading away, the virus has now made a worrying comeback, prompting the World Health Organisation (WHO) to issue an urgent alert due to rapidly rising cases across Asia and Europe. 560 Crore People At Risk Worldwide WHO Medical Officer Diana Rojas Alvarez has reportedly revealed that approximately 560 crore people across 119 countries are currently at risk. Chikungunya is transmitted by mosquitoes, especially those active during the rainy season. It can cause high fever, intense joint pain, and in rare cases, long-term disability. There is currently no vaccine available. Rapid Spread Mirrors 2005 Outbreak The 2025 surge has revived memories of the 2005 epidemic, which began on small islands such as La Réunion, Mayotte, and Mauritius. Today, up to 33% of La Réunion's population has reportedly been infected. The virus has also spread to parts of Africa, including Madagascar, Somalia, and Kenya, with signs of epidemic growth in South-East Asia, particularly in India, where increased mosquito breeding during the monsoon season is heightening the threat. Health officials are especially concerned about the virus's spread into Europe, a region where Chikungunya was previously rare. This change is being attributed to global travel and climate change. Since May 1, France has reported around 800 cases, including 12 local transmissions, while Italy has also confirmed an infection. Aedes Mosquitoes: The Daytime Danger Chikungunya is primarily spread by Aedes mosquitoes, which are active during daylight hours and also transmit diseases such as dengue and Zika. These mosquitoes flourish in warm, humid conditions and are particularly difficult to control during rainy seasons. While many recover fully, joint pain can persist for weeks or even months. The elderly and those with existing health issues are at higher risk of complications. With no vaccine or cure currently available, the WHO stresses prevention as the best defence: Global Call To Action The WHO has called on governments and health agencies worldwide to ramp up mosquito control, public awareness campaigns, and disease surveillance to avert a repeat of the 2000s crisis. Early action could be the key to preventing a global outbreak. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. The diet now includes plenty of veggies, grilled chicken and boiled eggs. 'We have controlled our diet a lot," Naushad told Hindustan Times.
