PwC's chief AI officer: AI is moving quickly. Here's how leaders can avoid getting left behind.
With generative AI radically reshaping how everything from accounting and human resources to sales and marketing gets done, CEOs' leadership skills are being put to the test. How they go about their AI strategy today, warned Priest, will likely mean the difference between achieving greater cost savings and faster growth in the next few years versus falling behind the curve.
"It is a disruptive journey that needs to be managed," he told Business Insider.
Consider, for example, a PwC survey of approximately 4,700 CEOs last year found that four out of 10 expect their business models to no longer be viable in the next decade if AI continues to develop at its current rate. Priest said this suggests companies will need to come up with new — and likely AI-powered ways — of generating revenue, which can be difficult.
Given how fast generative AI has been evolving, Priest stressed the importance of CEOs investing in AI tools and strategic planning around them now, if they haven't already, to set their businesses up for success. But he conceded that the task is challenging.
For one, leaders need to find ways to distinguish their companies from others using AI if they want to stand out from competitors, said Priest. Most use cases today are merely setting a new standard for table stakes.
"If AI is ubiquitous and everybody's got it, it can't be your differentiator alone," he said.
Leaders also need to figure out which job functions will be aided by AI and to what extent, and which ones will become obsolete, said Priest. Further, they should determine where new skills are needed, invest in helping employees develop them, and assess where talent may need to shift to other areas of the business.
"If you believe that people are an important part of your success in the future, you should invest in their reskilling," he said.
Workers aren't all using AI tools in the same way, added Priest.
"Early-career-stage team members are more likely to turn over the thinking too much to AI," he said. "Late-stage-career team members are probably too reticent to use it consistently."
One tip Priest has for anyone using AI to write memos or other text is to only rely on the technology for a second draft. People should produce a first and last version on their own, he said.
"You want the thinking to be yours. That's why the first draft is so important," Priest said. "You want the benefit of the edit and you want the final draft to be in your voice."
This is also an example of why he believes humans should be at the center of companies' AI-related initiatives.
"The shiny new object is AI, but I don't know a single AI agent that is changing a business," he said. "It's the humans combined with those AI agents that change the business."

AMD, in particular, has been showing that it isn't content playing second fiddle. CEO Lisa Su recently dropped a bombshell at the company's big "Advancing AI" event, unveiling the new Instinct MI350 series. These powerful new GPUs are built to supercharge AI, delivering up to four times more compute performance and a 35× boost in inference. More importantly, the top AI juggernauts in Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI are already kicking the tires on these chips. That shows the bellwethers in the hyperscaler space are itching for a serious Nvidia alternative. Though it was primarily a key player in motherboards and chassis, Supermicro now considers itself a leading hyperscale AI systems powerhouse. Last month, Saudi-based DataVolt signed a jaw-dropping $20 billion multi-year deal to deploy Supermicro's liquid-cooled GPU racks across AI campuses in Saudi Arabia and the U.S. Such an enormous order indicates that Supermicro's modular, dense, and energy-efficient designs are critical in powering AI mega-centers. Nvidia still calls the shots in the AI space, but AMD's MI350X ramp and Supermicro's hyperscale push highlight room for major competition. Mizuho's latest bullish note shows how AMD and Supermicro offer strong upside for chipmakers looking to feed AI's insatiable compute appetite. Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh stuck with his Outperform call on AMD stock but raised his 12-month price target to $152 from $135. That implies a 10.2% bump from Thursday's close at $137.91 and a 12.6% increase from the previous price target. Rakesh called out a "slightly better MI355X ramp" in the second half of this year. That's huge, considering the new Instinct series is arguably AMD's most promising play at challenging Nvidia's AI accelerator dominance. Hyperscalers want alternatives, and AMD's open-standard hardware is firmly on their radars. Related: Analyst reboots AMD stock price target on chip update Still, Mizuho didn't sugarcoat everything. It left its near-term numbers mostly unchanged, keeping the June-quarterly sales forecast at $7.40 billion and EPS at 47 cents, both just shy of consensus. For the full year, Rakesh has trimmed its EPS slightly to $3.90. Nevertheless, the real story is what happens next, with AMD's robust margin mix and high-end AI chips offsetting any short-term softness. Over at Supermicro, Rakesh sees plenty to like, too. He nudged his price target to $47 from $40, a healthy 17.5% bump, while keeping a Neutral rating. The veteran analyst believes the demand for AI servers is running hot. Sizeable shipments for Tier-2 Microsoft Azure partners, plus a steady drumbeat of orders for Supermicro's liquid-cooled GPU, point to an excellent runway ahead. Also, Rakesh models the Saudi Arabia DataVolt deal, adding $2.5 billion in annual sales starting next year, highlighting a massive ramp-up in top-line expansion. A troubling new trend is crystallizing in the tech industry. A company at the forefront of AI development lays off thousands of its human employees, then encourages them to seek comfort from the very technology supplanting them. It's the automation of suffering, and it's happening now. This week, Matt Turnbull, an Executive Producer at Xbox Game Studios Publishing, became a case study. Following Microsoft's decision to cut thousands jobs from its gaming division, Turnbull took to LinkedIn. With what seems like good intentions, he encouraged former employees to turn to AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot to manage the emotional and logistical fallout. 'These are really challenging times, and if you're navigating a layoff or even quietly preparing for one, you're not alone and you don't have to go it alone,' his post began. 'I know these types of tools engender strong feelings in people, but I'd be remiss in not trying to offer the best advice I can under the circumstances.' He continued: 'I've been experimenting with ways to use LLM AI tools (like ChatGPT or Copilot) to help reduce the emotional and cognitive load that comes with job loss.' AI Is Not in the Memo, but It Haunts Every Layoff at Xbox The message landed with a surreal thud. Microsoft, which just ended your employment, was now outsourcing your emotional support to a bot. The July layoffs hit Xbox Game Studios. Alongside the job cuts, Microsoft announced that ambitious titles like Perfect Dark and Everwild are being canceled, and at least one studio, The Initiative, one of Microsoft's newer, high-profile studios, is being closed entirely. In his now deleted post captured by Aftermath, Turnbull even offered prompt templates to help the newly unemployed start their conversations with the AI. Where a hefty severance package from a large corporation once included connections to human career coaches, AI now appears to be the cheaper, more scalable solution. While the prompts themselves may be useful, the gesture feels hollow coming from a leader at the company responsible for the layoffs. This is a stark redefinition of corporate care: outsourced, AI assisted, and quietly depersonalized. It's a chilling reframing of the social contract, where even empathy is routed through software. This is the tech world's cynical feedback loop. The same industry obsessed with automating jobs is now positioning its products as the cure for the emotional damage it inflicts. Microsoft, which has invested over $13 billion into OpenAI, has a direct financial stake in this solution. When an executive at a Microsoft owned studio promotes ChatGPT or its own Copilot as the first resource for the unemployed, it blurs the line between genuine concern and brand alignment. Empathy becomes a use case. Trauma becomes another customer journey. Traditionally, outplacement services offered a human touch. As LLMs become more powerful, the corporate pressure to automate post layoff support will only grow. A chatbot can rewrite your resume, coach you for interviews, and talk you down from a mental spiral, at least in theory. But what gets lost in that shift? What happens to the human dignity of grief, reflection, and real connection during a time of professional crisis? Even Turnbull acknowledged the tension in his post: 'No AI tool is a replacement for your voice or your lived experience. But at a time when mental energy is scarce, these tools can help get you unstuck faster, calmer, and with more clarity.' Turnbull's post isn't an isolated incident; it's a flare signaling a major cultural shift in tech, where recovery is being privatized, individualized, and automated. There's a strange, unnerving optimism embedded in all this: the belief that you can prompt your way out of pain. But pain isn't a productivity issue. And a layoff isn't a user experience problem. If the only support a worker receives is from a chatbot trained on the internet's vast archive of trauma, we are witnessing the dawn of something much darker than a downturn. We are seeing the first wave of algorithmic grief management, sanctioned by the very forces that deemed human workers disposable in the first place.

Researchers make incredible breakthrough with batteries that mimic human brains: 'This approach unlocks new capabilities'
Government researchers are applying mind function to battery making. By mimicking neural networks in human brains, National Renewable Energy Laboratory team members said they can predict battery health 1,000 times faster than standard methods, according to a news release. Common lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles and other technology include complex parts that need to operate in changing conditions. By better understanding battery cell health ASAP, the experts plan to expand pack lifetimes. It's an obvious win for EV owners and anyone else using a battery-powered device. "Battery lifetime and aging dynamics vary significantly with chemistry, operating conditions, cycling demands, electrode design, and operational history, which makes optimal handling, design, and maintenance difficult," researcher Kandler Smith said in the summary. He leads the lab's electrochemical modeling and data science research. "It's especially difficult to understand the physical degradation mechanisms of a battery during use without opening it up. We need reliable methods to check in on batteries' internal state in a nondestructive way," Smith added. The lab's approach replaces the common physics-based model with what's called a physics-informed neural network, or PINN. It also uses artificial intelligence. It's geared to quantify degradation and provide better solutions to manage battery aging during cycling, per the release. It's a field the team has been working in for a while. The lab has already produced a couple of physics-based predictive models. But they require a slow quagmire of computations. PINN understands physics and can quickly apply its laws to a pattern-based prediction model. It's an ingenious marriage of the two diagnostic setups, according to the summary. Other labs are researching sensors and scans that can detect flaws in packs to better prevent failures and even rare, yet serious, fires. It's part of a whirlwind of battery breakthroughs happening around the world that are providing better components, chemistry, and production methods that are lowering costs and improving performance. Goldman Sachs forecast that pack prices will drop 50% by next year, partly thanks to improving technology. The units are crucial to the cleaner energy shift by both powering EVs and storing renewable electricity. Battery backups combined with a solar panel system at home can greatly reduce or eliminate your utility bill. A setup can charge your EV while providing blackout protection. And if it's part of a virtual power plant, you can even sell some of the excess electricity back to the grid. Should the U.S. invest more in battery innovations? Back in the lab, the government renewable energy experts are planning for more testing to expand the open-source model's function. The goal is for onboard analysis while the battery operates. It could be a key upgrade, giving next-gen tech a longer life. "This approach unlocks new capabilities in battery diagnostics. … This means that batteries of the future may include systems to extend their useful life by identifying degradation signals and adapting fast-charge limits with age," Smith said in the release.
