'The timing was poor' - Bothroyd on Cunha comments
The timing of Matheus Cunha's comments implying he wants to leave Wolves "doesn't make sense", says former Wanderers striker Jay Bothroyd.Forward Cunha said in an interview with the Observer that he has told the club he needs to "take the next step" and fight for titles in his career. However, in a social media video on Monday, the 25-year-old said people did not have the "correct interpretation"."The timing was poor," Bothroyd told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast."Everyone knows he wants to leave - he's a quality player who is going to go to a bigger club."But when you've signed a new deal and they've paid you more money - and they've given you a new contract so they can demand more money for you - why would you say this now?"This should be a period where he gets his head down and tries to contribute to the team getting results, and then at the end of the season look at the scenario which comes around then."Right now, it just doesn't make sense."It doesn't affect the way you treat them, because obviously they're still your team-mate, but some players might go to him and say: 'Why did you do that?'"I had a situation at Cardiff in the last year of my contract where every weekend I was being asked if I was leaving and why I hadn't signed a new deal My answer was simple and what it should be: 'I'm focusing on my football, I haven't got time for anything else.'"That is what Cunha should have said to whoever interviewed him about Wolves because it is a big part of the season, there are some big games coming up and he needs to be on form."The manager won't be happy he spoke like that either. It's a strange one."Listen to the full chat on BBC Sounds from 08:21

West Ham set to go head-to-head with Premier League rivals for £25m-rated Nice striker
West Ham are preparing to compete with Wolverhampton Wanderers for Nice forward Evann Guessand but need to secure sales first and that could hasten the exit of Mohammed Kudus. Wolves are reported to be preparing an offer for Guessand, who scored 13 goals last season for Nice as they finished fourth in the French League behind Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille and Monaco. The 23-year-old Ivory Coast international figures highly among Graham Potter 's options as he looks to rebuild the team he inherited in midseason. West Ham considered moving for Guessand in January but Nice were reluctant to sell as they chased a Champions League place. The Hammers remain interested in a striker with three more years on his contract who is expected to be available for £20-25 million. Wolves, West Ham's rivals for Guessand, are set to bank £62.5m from the sale of Matheus Cunha to Manchester United. Both Wolves boss Vitor Pereira and West Ham manager Graham Potter are keen on Guessand They are committed to spending £23m to make Jorgen Strand Larsen's move permanent from Celta Vigo but still have money to invest as Vitor Pereira looks to reshape his squad. West Ham boss Potter will have to be creative to perform the surgery necessary to revive a squad that laboured to 43 points in the Premier League last season. His priority is to revive the front line with Michail Antonio, who made his return from injuries sustained in a car accident in December with Jamaica at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, is out of contract.

'Early days' to judge Wolves' transfer activity
There has been a fair amount of talk on social media about Wolves' transfer window, with some fans already feeling anxious about a lack of action. It is early days though, and I think there are some positives as well as plenty of time left for the club to make the right departures of key players are a worry. Replacing talent and leadership will not be easy, and it is vital the club gets these decisions right. While I would prefer most signings to be completed in time for Vitor Pereira to work with them in pre-season, it is more important to focus on making the right additions rather than rushing into risky in-house changes have caught my attention too. With the arrival of technical director Domenico Teti, perhaps Pereira will take on more responsibility for transfers, working more like a traditional manager than the modern head coach. The involvement of Jorge Mendes' agency Gestifute and Valdir Cardoso could also be key. This all suggests the club is setting up for a significant summer in the transfer far, Fer Lopez is the only signing. He seems a great prospect with impressive stats, though he lacks top-level experience. The good news is he will get a full pre-season with Pereira and chance to settle stand out as a need. Hugo Bueno impressed on loan at Feyenoord and will probably claim a starting spot, but Wolves need more depth and strong competition on both flanks. Nelson Semedo's contract situation adds another question mark, and a replacement for him may be front, more changes seem likely. Both Goncalo Guedes and Hwang Hee-chan could move on, opening doors for fresh attacking options. Pereira wants players with pace and the ability to win one on ones, so new arrivals should fit this the club's financial year restarting on Tuesday, 1 July, I expect transfer activity to ramp up. There is a lot of work ahead, but I am hopeful we will soon see some thoughtful, well-planned more from Dazzling Dave at Always Wolves, external

Man Utd transfer news LIVE: United ‘want Ndidi', Garnacho exit LATEST, Barcelona eye Rashford LOAN, Mbeumo bid
Man Utd transfer struggles Manchester United are facing an uphill battle to move on some of their unwanted players, including one forgotten title-winning star. The Red Devils need to sell in order to bring in new signings beyond the addition of Matheus Cunha and possible arrival of Bryan Mbeumo. It's a situation that United have rarely found themselves in - struggling to find the funds to bring in their transfer targets. Their financial woes follow a shocking campaign last term in which they failed to qualify for Europe for the first time since 2015. And although they are safe with regard to FFP, United will need to sell before they can buy - backed up by chief Omar Berrada's admission that they "are going to have to balance the books" to United We Stand. Historically, selling isn't something that United have been particularly good at, with The Athletic reporting that club insiders have described departures as "an afterthought" in the past. While United have made just £105.5m in profit from player sales over the past five years, a figure dwarfed by the £508.6m and £435.8m that Chelsea and Man City have made in the same period.
