Minnesota Vikings could cut Minnesota QB in favor of more veteran presence

USA Today01-07-2025
With training camp on the horizon, projections are coming in for the Vikings' 53-man roster from every corner of the media circle. The latest comes from the well-respected Judd Zulgad, who recently spoke about his thoughts on the Vikings roster while on The Purple Daily Podcast.
The conversation included the entire roster on a recent episode, but the discussion around the quarterback position proved to be most interesting. Don't worry, there was no suggestion of Kirk Cousins or anyone else coming back. Instead, they did focus on the idea of a veteran presence being the one they lean on in the quarterback room.
Zulgad explains, 'Now, I do think that Brosmer winds up spending the season on the Vikings' practice squad, I guess the wild-card here is, what does Howell show in training camp? Does Howell firmly take hold of the No. 2 position and prove he belongs there? Do the Vikings say, 'You know what? There might be better options?' But as of now… as we head into the offseason, the last gasp of it at least — McCarthy, Howell, Rypien.'
Rypien has proven to have a soft spot in Kevin O'Connell's mind as he builds out his quarterback room every year he has been on the roster. The former Boise State quarterback has had a live arm since his college days, and it's something that makes him a fun player to keep around on the practice squad.
It will be interesting to see how reps are split during training camp and in preseason games between Rypien and Brosmer as the competition heats up.

Stefon Diggs got cryptic about his status for Patriots' Week 1 game vs. Raiders

Stefon Diggs has not looked like a man less than a year removed from ACL surgery during his first training camp with the New England Patriots. The veteran receiver has looked close to his normal self as he's made catches and cuts throughout the summer, and all signs have pointed toward Diggs being on the field for New England's Week 1 clash against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 7. But with the Patriots' opener now just over three weeks away, Diggs is getting a little cryptic about his Week 1 status. In an interview with Dianna Russini on the Scoop City podcast while in Minnesota for joint practices with the Vikings, Diggs gave the host anything but a scoop on his plans for the opener. "We'll see," said Diggs. "Everybody is excited. I'm taking it day by day. We'll see how it goes." Diggs tore his ACL last October while with the Houston Texans, and the injury and subsequent surgery usually requires 9-12 months of recovery. But Diggs was given full clearance ahead of training camp and has been on the field for the majority of New England's practices. He's not just participating, but making big plays to boot. Russini asked Diggs if he was "overdoing it" in his attempt to come back as quick as possible. "I feel great. I'm pushing the knee, always. I'm always doing more than less," he said. "We'll see about Week 1. I don't now how I feel about it. Coaches aren't too excited. I'm not too excited. We just don't know where it will go." The comment certainly seemed a bit tongue-in-cheek, since it's been speculated Diggs could be ready for Week 1 ever since he took part in offseason workouts with the Patriots. But Russini tried once again to get a definitive answer from the veteran receiver at the end of their chat, and Diggs once again played coy. "I don't know. It's up in the air right now. You gotta take that up with coach Vrabel," Diggs responded. Reporters did just that Thursday ahead of New England's second joint practice with the Vikings in Minnesota. Vrabel sounded a little irked when NBC Sports Boston's Phil Perry took Diggs' comments seriously. "Did you really believe that, Phil? You're a smart guy. I don't know where you went to school – I know it wasn't Ohio State. But do you really believe that or are you trying to bait me into something," asked Vrabel. Vrabel said he didn't know the context of Diggs' Week 1 comments, but also didn't want to try to predict the future on Thursday. "He's been out here almost every day. I'm excited where he's at, and we'll see when Week 1 comes," Vrabel said of Diggs. "He'll practice today and hopefully he helps us in the red zone. But we can't predict the future about Week 1. I know he's going to be out there today, and he works hard and he cares, which are two important things." Diggs had a big catch during Wednesday's joint practice with the Vikings, and was back out for more in Thursday's second practice as the Patriots put a big emphasis on work inside the red zone. Diggs did not play in New England's preseason opener last Friday against the Washington Commanders, and it's unclear if his heavy workload in joint practices with the Vikings this week will keep him out of Saturday's preseason tilt against in Minnesota. It would make sense to keep him out of the preseason during his recovery. But now there's some doubt about Diggs suiting up on Sept. 7 when the Patriots kick off the 2025 season, so it's unclear when we'll see the veteran playmaker put on a Pats uniform for some game action for the very first time.

Netflix sells out all ad time for Christmas NFL games

More than four months before Christmas, Netflix has already sold all its available commercial time for the two NFL games it will show on December 25. 'For our two highly anticipated Netflix NFL games this December, we've sold out of all available in-game inventory and have closed sponsorships with multiple partners like Accenture, FanDuel, Google, and Verizon on in-game and broadcast features,' Netflix said in a statement. One of the reasons live sports have become so attractive to the streaming providers is that viewers are much more willing to sit through ads while watching sports than they are for scripted programming. The NFL is both the most popular programming on American television and a sport in which fans have come to accept that commercial breaks are part of the deal. Netflix will show Cowboys-Commanders at 1 p.m. ET on Christmas Day, followed by Lions-Vikings at 4:30.

2025 college football predictions: Air Force, Hawaii are live to win the Mountain West

The college football landscape has completely changed over the last few years, but one thing has remained constant: The Mountain West Conference runs through Boise. Fresh off an appearance in the College Football Playoff, Boise State is the only odds-on favorite in any conference going into the year. The Broncos have won the Mountain West two years in a row, and they've been to the conference championship in seven of the last eight seasons. Anything short of a three-peat would be deemed a disappointment for Boise State, but there are a handful of teams in this region who could give the blue-turfers a run for their money. 2025 Mountain West odds Team Odds Boise State -155 UNLV +650 San Jose State +750 Fresno State +900 Colorado State 14/1 Air Force 16/1 Hawaii 20/1 San Diego State 33/1 Wyoming 33/1 Utah State 50/1 Nevada 75/1 New Mexico 150/1 Odds via bet365 2025 Mountain West best bets, picks, and predictions The Favorite You'd think that Boise State would be projected to take a step back after losing all-world running back Ashton Jeanty to the NFL, but the Broncos are such a machine at this point that they could be better than they were in 2024. Spencer Danielson, in his second full year at the helm, didn't have too many holes to patch up aside from the Jeanty-sized one in the backfield, and he'll have the comfort of knowing that Maddux Madsen will be back under center after throwing for over 3,000 yards in 2024. The departure of Jeanty will put Madsen under more pressure, but he shouldn't have to light it up because the Broncos' defense projects to be a real force in the Mountain West. The Broncos are clearly the best team in this conference, but that doesn't make them a good bet to win the MWC for a third year on the spin. At -155, you'd need to think the Broncos have better than a 60.8 percent chance of winning the Mountain West to start to see value, and that seems a little rich considering the quality of competition around them. Ashton Jeanty is pictured during Boise State's game in November 2024. AP The Dark Horses UNLV's rise in the NIL era has turned heads, and they've got some heavy expectations in Year 1 under Dan Mullen, the former Mississippi State and Florida head coach, despite a massive amount of roster turnover. The Rebels rank 132nd in returning production, but the program won't be in disarray thanks to some deep pockets helping recruit plenty of former blue-chip prospects. Nonetheless, a team fielding upwards of 20 new starters is not one you'd feel comfortable backing as a +650 second favorite in a conference with Boise State. San Jose State is getting some hype as a potential upstart after a strong first season under former Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo, but the price has come down too much since opening to be interesting now. The Spartans are a team worth backing in other ways, however. Fresno State has been a model program in the Group of 5 for years and years, but the Bulldogs have undergone so much change in the past few seasons that it's hard to get excited about backing them at 9/1. Perhaps former North Dakota State head coach Matt Entz gets them rolling in Year 1, but the price isn't for me. Best bets for the Mountain West Anything can happen in the Group of 5, but this isn't the conference where you want to be careful about hunting huge prices. That said, there are two teams in the middle of the board that are intriguing options for a decent payday. Air Force to win the Mountain West (16/1, bet365) First up is Air Force at 16/1. The Falcons looked destined for a terrible campaign in 2024, but they turned a 1-7 record into 5-7 with four impressive victories to close out the season. That was something a lot of bettors put in their back pocket, hoping that the growth that the Falcons showed in the second half will carry over into 2025. Betting on College Football? Momentum from one season to the next is dubious for most teams in this era of college football because of the turnover, but it's different for the Service Academies. The biggest question mark will be at quarterback, with Josh Johnson a relative unknown. If he's able to run the show efficiently, Air Force becomes dangerous in a hurry. Hawaii to win the Mountain West (20/1, BetMGM) This could be the make-or-break year for Timmy Chang at his alma mater. Hawaii has shown some improvements in three years under Chang, but they'll need to make a serious dent in 2025 to keep his seat cool. The good news for Chang and the Rainbow Warriors is that they've got a real shot at making some noise thanks to an easy schedule and a high-ceiling quarterback who is drawing comparisons to…Chang. Hawaii fans got just a glimpse of Micah Alejado in 2024, but the 5-foot-10 quarterback made the most of it, throwing for 469 yards and five touchdowns against New Mexico at the end of the campaign. Alejado will need to be prolific for Hawaii to have a chance, but his pedigree and first impression suggest there's a chance he is just that.
