Egypt arrests 8 TikTok creators on ‘indecency' charges in latest morality crackdown
According to the interior ministry, the creators' videos contain 'obscene language', 'violate public morals' and constitute 'a misuse of social media'.
The advocacy group Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) has accused authorities of seeking to control public discourse, urging them to 'stop prosecuting online content creators on vague, ethics- and class-based charges such as 'violating Egyptian family values''.
The wave of arrests followed an online smear campaign and a complaint filed by 32 lawyers that alleged the videos 'posed a danger to young people', without explaining how.
The ensuing crackdown 'is the largest since 2020', said Lobna Darwish, EIPR's gender and human rights officer.
In 2020, Egyptian security forces launched a similar crackdown mainly against young women dancing and lip-synching on TikTok, deeming the content too suggestive.

Analysts say that while there are multilateral efforts under way to reduce reliance on China they are largely diplomatic, and there is a lack of investment or technical expertise to move away from Chinese supply. They also say that developing countries with rare earths are emerging as the new front line of a high-stakes contest between China and the West.

Israeli PM Netanyahu decides on ‘full occupation' of Gaza: reports
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided that his forces should occupy the whole of Gaza, media reports said on Monday, amid mounting criticism of the dire humanitarian situation in the coastal territory. Netanyahu reportedly plans to consult his cabinet and military leadership in the coming days to muster support for the plan. News portal quoted a senior official said to be close to Netanyahu as saying: 'The die is cast, we are going for a full occupation of the Gaza Strip.' The Israeli prime minister himself said earlier that he was planning to convene the Security Cabinet to discuss further actions in Gaza, as the conflict nears 22 months. In a video message published on Sunday, Netanyahu said Palestinian extremist group Hamas refuses to agree to a negotiated solution. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) has repeatedly opposed a full occupation of Gaza, warning that demolishing all Hamas tunnels and bunkers could take years, according to the Times of Israel newspaper.
