Be accurate with hornbill design, zoologist urges bank
PETALING JAYA : A zoologist has urged Affin Bank to rectify the image of a hornbill on the bank's debit card for Sarawakians, saying that key features showed that it was not the rhinoceros hornbill, the state bird of Sarawak.
Jason Teo, a Sarawakian, said the casque of the hornbill shown matched that of the rhinoceros hornbill but its yellowish-white neck and stripes of white on its wings were features of the great hornbill species.
He said rhinoceros hornbills are native to East and West Malaysia, but not the great hornbills. Affin Bank should make the necessary amendments. 'Mistakes happen, and I believe this was an honest one,' he said, the Borneo Post reported.
Teo said the image of the hornbill on the card should not be a mix of several species. 'The designated state bird of Sarawak is specifically the rhinoceros hornbill, not just any hornbill,' he said.
The great hornbill is found in mainland Asia while the rhinoceros hornbill is found only in the forests of Peninsular Malaysia and the islands of Sumatra, Java and Borneo.
On Thursday, Sarawak DAP secretary Violet Yong had urged the bank, which is partly state-owned, to apologise and replace the cards.
Yesterday, Kuching South mayor Wee Hong Seng defended the bank, saying the graphic was merely a conceptual design that was 'quite close' to the rhinoceros hornbill.
The card was introduced by the bank for its Kenyalang savings account for Sarawakians last month. The Sarawak government has a 31.25% stake in the bank.

Kedah airport runway closed after ‘incident' with air force aircraft

(KLIA2 pic) PETALING JAYA : The runway of Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Kedah has been temporarily closed after an incident involving an air force aircraft at around 11.30am. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd said the runway was closed to help with the removal of the aircraft and for 'clearing works'. 'A notice to airmen has been issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, and the closure is expected to remain in effect until 4pm today. 'Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates,' it said in a Facebook post. It is not immediately clear what had occurred. In May, the Alor Setar airport's runway was also forced to close after an air force fighter jet skidded on its nose while landing. The pilot did not suffer any injuries in the incident.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) aimed to increase participation and offer visitors a unique opportunity to explore the advanced assets and equipment of regional naval fleets. 'The strong turnout, both local and international, reflects the spirit of unity in Penang's diversity,' he said, expressing his gratitude to the RMN for their efforts in ensuring the success of this year's Hari Buletin, during the closing ceremony. The ANCP and Hari Buletin featured a naval parade with ships from 10 Asean nations, combat boat demonstrations, a flypast by RMN helicopters, a silent drill display, a military band performance, as well as engaging activities such as a colouring contest, costume competition, lucky draws, exhibitions by various government agencies, and food stalls. The ANCP is an RMN initiative to introduce naval military traditions to the public. Hari Buletin, on the other hand, celebrates the readers of Buletin Mutiara, the state's official newspaper, which provides valuable insights into Penang's policies, community programmes, and local news. GEORGE TOWN, Aug 17 — The atmosphere at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) was vibrant today, as thousands of visitors eagerly took the chance to board naval ships from Asean countries. The event, part of the Asean Navies' City Parade (ANCP) and the 4.0 Bulletin Day celebration organised by the state government, attracted a diverse crowd, including families, school students, and military enthusiasts. They were thrilled to explore the advanced maritime defence assets from across the region. For retired Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) personnel Mohd Fauzi Bakar, 68, today's experience was especially meaningful. Despite serving for 21 years, he had never been on a foreign warship. 'Asean has some highly advanced ships with a wide range of weaponry, comparable to Malaysia's assets. Boarding these ships gives the public a unique experience,' he told Bernama after exploring the Asean naval ships at SPCT here today.
