Drug gang used flights from France to drop £4m worth of cocaine in English countryside
Members of a gang involved in airdropping millions of pounds worth of cocaine into the British countryside are facing prison over the importation of illegal drugs.
Cocaine worth an estimated £4.2m was later discovered at a car wash in Hertfordshire and a house in Loughton, Essex.
An investigation led by the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU) found the gang liaised with contacts abroad to bring in the drugs, with flights leaving from the Cherbourg area of northern France.
The planes would intentionally avoid radar systems and disable transponders that alert other pilots of their whereabouts, police said.
Four members of the group have now been convicted, after Loughton man Tomas Bauza, 44, on Tuesday at St Albans Crown Court was found guilty following a trial.
Detective Inspector Daniel Barker, from ERSOU's ROCU, said: 'It's clear that this group had put significant thought and planning into how they could best bring class A drugs into the UK, and they went to great lengths in attempting to hide their illicit activities.
'However, the tenacity of ERSOU's investigators let to our teams uncovering vast amounts of evidence implicating each member of the OCG, and we were able to stop a significant amount of cocaine entering our communities.'
Police were made aware of at least three flights to southern England before immediately returning to France.
Each time, either Rolandas Bauza, 47, from the same address in Loughton, or associate Martynas Piecia, 37, of Thaxted, drove to the same location to wait to collect the parcels.
Bishop's Stortford man Arjan Lisaj, 33, who worked at the car wash, was arrested in September 2024 alongside Bauza and Piecia a short distance from the business in Spellbrook, Hertfordshire.
The three men pleaded guilty to being involved in the importation and supply of controlled drugs into the UK.
Officers found two blocks of cocaine in the car wash office, while Rolandas was found to be carrying £37,000 in cash.
Tomas was arrested at a raid of the Bauza brothers' home, where police also uncovered 54g of cocaine in the loft, and evidence the property had been used as a cannabis factory.
Detective Inspector Barker said police worked closely with other UK police forces and agencies abroad 'to ensure that those involved in serious criminality such as this are apprehended and brought to justice.'
All four men are due to be sentenced at St Albans Crown Court on Monday, 4 August.

The group were taking in the sights of the Avenue de Mallorca strip and had just left the Hippodrome Bar when the lifelong Manchester United supporter lost contact with his friends. In the early hours of June 23, Mike, a builder from Wythenshawe, was assaulted. His nose was broken and he fell onto the ground, hitting his head and sustaining severe head trauma. Mike spent a month unconscious in hospital, with his then-pregnant daughter Hayley and sister Nicola flying out to be by his side as he lay connected to ventilator machines. Mike had travelled to celebrate a friend's 50th birthday and watch the 2018 World Cup (Image: PA ) Article continues below After being flown back to Salford Royal Hospital, Mike spent the remaining year of his life unable to move or speak, in a vegetative state and requiring round-the-clock care. He tragically passed away in August of 2019, he was only 48. His attacker has never been found. Despite the incident sparking an inquiry by the local Spanish authorities no witness statements or police investigations have ever brought Mike's attacker to justice. Speaking on what would have been his 54th birthday, Mike's daughter Hayley said the family has spent years in the dark and "unable to have closure without answers" as they issued another desperate plea for information. Hayley told the Manchester Evening News: "You can't ever really move on, because you don't have any answers. It's been years and we haven't been told anything. "At the time, there were so many different witness stories. At one point we were told it was a stag party and someone in camouflage clothing. Then we were told it was a bouncer. "One stated that, the night he was attacked, my dad had a drink and was seen backing off with his hands in the air when he was punched to the nose, which broke, and then he fell backwards onto his head. They said they have never been able to get the sound of him hitting the ground out of their head." Back in the UK, the Greater Manchester Police conducted meticulous inquiries, pulling in over 15 British holiday-goers who witnessed the attack. The Hippodrome bar on Avenue de Mallorca in Benidorm Detectives have described the suspect in the assault on Mike as a white male, in his 20s or 30s, with a larger than average build, between 5ft 7ins and 6ft tall, and possibly wearing in camouflage clothing. Hayley, 36, recalled the harrowing moment she found out: "My dad's partner at the time got the call from one of his friends to tell her what had happened. When you hear that, you still never think it will be as bad as what we walked into." "When I first saw him in the hospital and he was lying there with tubes everywhere it was so painful I had to walk back out. "I was pregnant with one of my daughters, and I flew out the next day with my partner. Between me and Nicola his sister we kept going back and forth to make sure he was never on his own. It was so hard on us all. I had a young child at the time too, so it was really difficult." Mike was eventually flown home and admitted to Salford Royal Hospital. Hayley explained that despite surviving until the following August, he was unable to move or speak, making her feel as though she had 'already lost him' before his life support was withdrawn. Hayley added: "My dad never got to hold her or touch my daughter because he was in hospital. In 2022, I had a son which would have been his only grandson. He had always wanted a grandson." Greater Manchester Police confirmed there had been no updates in the case, which remains in the hands of Spanish authorities. Ross Monaghan, 43, had become a target following a feud with a Spanish drugs cartel which is connected to the south of England. He was gunned down alongside Eddie Lyons Jr, 46, at a popular Irish bar in Costa del Sol on Saturday. The Scottish gangsters were killed in front of horrified diners who were watching the Champions League final at Monaghans in Fuengirola. Lyons Jr was struck in the chest and died at the scene. Monaghan sprinted into the bar as customers hid underneath tables and chairs but was unable to escape his killer. He is believed to have been shot at least four times in the chest and abdomen. An insider told The Sun: 'A firm from England with connections to Alicante had warned of a £250,000 contract on Monaghan weeks before the shooting. It's not clear if that information found its way to Monaghan but he must have known something was brewing because it was related to debts." The pair were believed to have been relaxing with a group of friends as they watched the game at the bar. Despite some people having left the bar, the two Lyons gang members stayed behind. Monaghan's family are said to have confirmed that their long-standing Scottish enemies, the Daniels, are not behind the double shooting. According to sources, Monaghan had reportedly kept his distance from his Irish bar before he visited on Saturday night. It has been speculated as to whether the gunman was tipped off about his appearance. Another source told the publication: 'They obviously knew he and Eddie were there, what they looked like, what they were wearing and possibly where they were sitting. The assassin approached at speed and homed in on the target with any hesitation. It's no wonder people suspect he was being fed information." Spain's National Police said during an initial statement: 'Around midnight on Saturday an incident with firearms occurred in Fuengirola, specifically at an entertainment venue along the seafront. Two males died as a result from gunshot wounds. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made so far.'
