Additional funds approved for Porthcawl Grand Pavilion project

Yahoo27-03-2025
Councillors in Bridgend have approved the use of an extra £4m worth of funds from the Welsh Government for the next phase in the Porthcawl Grand Pavilion redevelopment.
Members at a full council agreed to release £4m of capital funding from the sale of land, which is part of a new owners agreement with Welsh Government, to jointly progress the Porthcawl Regeneration Programme.
It will now allow for the £20m project to renovate the town's popular Grade II-listed building and give it a new lease of life to progress to the next stage.

The latest version of the plans, which were supported by the UK Government's Levelling-Up Fund, will see the conservation and repair of the some of the building's art deco features including the clock tower and stained-glass windows along with a new studio theatre, bar, and 'changing places' facility that would be open to the public.
They will also see the creation of new extensions including a glazed rooftop pavilion with views of the Bristol channel, a passenger lift, auditorium, gallery, toilet facilities, and supporting back-of-house areas.
Additionally there will be a "sensitive restoration" of the building's original domed roof with new insulation and the original marine-styled weathervane being reinstated.
At the meeting members were given an update on the project where "substantial progress" was said to have been made with the initial prep work and strip-out of the building now completed.
Officers said that there had also been a "compliant tender bid" received for the work which came in under the cost threshold though this was subject to the funding from the owners agreement being available.
They also noted there was a risk that if the extra capital funding wasn't approved the tender contract wouldn't go forward and the UK Government's Levelling Up Funding may be lost.
The report said: "If the Grand Pavilion main works contract is successfully awarded works will begin on-site during May 2025 and are anticipated to be completed by spring 2027."
Councillor Neelo Farr added: "This is exciting news for the Grand Pavilion project. We have already made huge strides in the programme with the initial preparatory works, including internal strip-out of the building, now complete. These works were essential in identifying and addressing any structural issues prior to the main building works starting." For the latest Bridgend news sign up to our newsletter here.

Fake news articles are appearing online which promote cryptocurrency schemes - some of which are designed to look like genuine WalesOnline articles and featuring phony BBC footage. Links for the articles have surfaced on Facebook to readers with headlines such as 'Online platforms allow investing in stocks and cryptocurrencies' and 'Now anyone can become an investor'. One article, made to look like a genuine WalesOnline article but with the url ending with even had a picture of First Minister Eluned Morgan and a made-up 'interview' between her and journalists. READ MORE: We loved meeting at our village pub so much we took it over READ MORE: The staggering Whatsapp messages sent to the new Archbishop of Wales by her colleagues The quote 'this is a special investment system, supported by the state and designed for the earnings of ordinary Welsh citizens' is attributed to her, but the First Minister has not said this and the interview is fake. Another fake article made to look like it was published on WalesOnline, complete with the website's usual logo at the top of the page, had the headline 'Welsh Government launches state investment platform', inviting people to 'safely invest and multiply their capital threshold'. This is categorically a fake advertisement and people who see such items or articles on Facebook or on any other social media platform are advised not to click on the link, and certainly not to sign up to any investments offered within it. A spokesman for the Welsh Government said: 'This is a fake advert. We notified the Advertising Standards Authority last month and they had it taken down immediately. UK Drops Mandate for Apple ‘Backdoor' on Americans, Gabbard Says

Apple Inc. will no longer be forced to provide a so-called backdoor to American users' data to the UK government, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said in a post on X on Monday. The iPhone maker had been compelled by a UK order in January to disable its most advanced encryption for user information stored in its cloud services, as authorities sought access to global user data, which may include communications like device backups and voice memos.

EV sales outshine other fuel types in UK market: BCA

UK electric vehicle (EV) sales are currently 'outperforming' those of other fuel types, reaching 'record levels' in August, according to the data from British Car Auctions (BCA). EVs are leading with the highest first-time conversion rate and the strongest CAP performance across both monthly and live evaluations. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! The Insurance Savings You Expect Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You Great Rates and Award-Winning Service The report noted that the EV market is unfolding against a backdrop of industry apprehension regarding used EV values. This concern stems from the UK Government's introduction of the Electric Car Grant on 15 July 2025, aimed at promoting the switch to zero-emission vehicles and supporting sustainable automotive practices. Despite a delay in detailed information about vehicle eligibility for the grant, the BCA said that demand for used EVs has not diminished in the last month. Live pricing for a three-year-old/60K mileage EV was recently adjusted to reflect the ongoing market strength. BCA COO Stuart Pearson said: 'BCA's inventory levels remain healthy for the summer months - we continue to sell more than 1,000 used EVs every week, so supply issues are not driving the daily strong price performance we are seeing in this sector. Many motor trade buyers have realised both the incredible value and the profit opportunity that many EVs represent, given the growing acceptance from consumers for electric vehicles. 'BCA continues to support our customers trading in the EV sector, introducing unbiased and detailed Battery Health Grading for electric vehicles last year and launching an upgraded EV report certificate this July that includes many new comparative features across similar model/ age/mileage vehicles, for a true indication of condition. 'We've talked about the remarketing basics for many years; however, there are new levels of sophistication that every seller should be using to ensure that EVs reach their optimum price in the market.' 'This includes investing in the right level of pre-sale preparation, describing them properly with in-depth information covering not just the cosmetic and mechanical condition, but also the health of the battery, and aligning all of this with real-time pricing intelligence to support accurate decision making. Then it is critical to put these vehicles in front of the largest and most engaged buyer audience, in the right channel and at the right time, for first-time entered and sold success.' Earlier this month, BCA reported that the resilience of used car values was evident in July, with the average price recorded at £7,677 ($10,313), only a marginal 0.9% decrease from the previous month.
