Hawkers oppose eviction drive at Shillong's Police Bazar, seek fair relocation plan
2
Shillong: Street vendors at Khyndailad in Shillong's Police Bazar area on Monday voiced strong opposition to the Shillong Municipal Board's eviction drive, demanding a mutually agreeable solution before any relocation takes place.
The Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association has opposed the forceful eviction of hawkers without a consensus on relocation plans.
Civic body staff, accompanied by officials from the East Khasi Hills district administration and police personnel, launched an eviction drive targeting street hawkers without certificates of vending. Goods belonging to the vendors occupying public spaces were seized and loaded into trucks, even as some hawkers attempted to retrieve them.
Over the past week, the civic body had issued public announcements asking unauthorised vendors to vacate the area, which has officially been declared a no-vending zone.
Hawkers with valid certificates have been directed to shift to designated vending spaces, including the govt-owned MUDA commercial complex in Police Bazar, by July 22.
Meanwhile, the civic body has also directed shop owners and commercial establishments at Khyndailad not to display goods outside their premises.

A June 29 notification issued by the civic body chief executive officer PK Boro warned that non-compliance would result in the removal of such goods by the municipal board and could lead to suspension or revocation of business licences.
"It was found that many shops and commercial establishments are displaying goods outside their premises. This is a blatant encroachment on public paths and roads, causing inconvenience to the public and violating conditions of the Business License under Shillong Municipal By-Law 136 framed under the Meghalaya Municipal Act, 1973 (as amended)," the notice stated.

IBBI proposes cap on assignments for insolvency professionals to curb delays
The IBBI has proposed imposing a cap on the number of assignments that insolvency professionals (IPs) can handle across key roles, in a bid to improve efficiency and ensure equitable distribution of work. Currently, IPs are restricted to a maximum of 10 assignments as resolution professionals (RPs) in corporate insolvency resolution processes (CIRPs), of which not more than three can involve admitted claims exceeding Rs 1,000 crore each. As of March 31, 2025, out of 4,527 registered IPs, 2,198 held valid authorisations for assignment, with many juggling multiple roles alongside their regular practice. Live Events Under the proposed framework, the IBBI said IPs already handling 10 or more assignments, whether as RP, IRP or liquidator, when the new rules come into force will not be permitted to take on fresh work until their active caseload falls below the threshold. The changes will be effected through the deletion of Clause 22 of the Code of Conduct under the IBBI's (Insolvency Professionals) regulations, 2016, and the insertion of a new norm specifically capping total assignments. In a separate discussion paper, IBBI has also proposed deleting Clause 6 from the Code of Conduct for Insolvency Professionals (IPs), citing duplication with existing rules that already govern the sale of debtor assets during liquidation and bankruptcy. Under the clause, it prohibits IPs and their relatives from acquiring assets of a debtor during liquidation or bankruptcy process unless it is shown that there was no impairment of objectivity, independence or impartiality, and the board's approval has been obtained in the matter. However, the board noted that similar prohibitions are explicitly laid out in the IBBI's Liquidation Process rules, and the Bankruptcy Process for Personal Guarantors to Corporate Debtors norms. "It is proposed that to avoid duplication and for promoting harmonisation within the Regulations, Clause 6 be deleted from the Code of Conduct for Insolvency Professionals," the IBBI said. Removing the clause from the Code of Conduct would avoid potential duplication and redundancy, and also ensure that specific prohibitions are primarily housed within the rules that govern the procedural aspects of asset realisation, it added. The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) has invited public comments on the proposals by September 1.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed sends firefighting team to aid Albania's wildfire battle
UAE dispatched a specialized firefighting team to help Albania/Image: File In response to the unprecedented wildfire crisis devastating large parts of Albania in August 2025, the United Arab Emirates has deployed a specialized firefighting team to support local crews in combating the blazes. Arriving on August 11, 2025, the UAE team brought qualified personnel, helicopters, advanced firefighting equipment, and materials to assist in extinguishing fires in critically affected areas including Petrela and Gramsh. These operations follow directives from UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to provide urgent climate disaster assistance as Albania faces some of its worst wildfires in recent history. TL;DR: The UAE dispatched a specialized firefighting team with helicopters and advanced equipment to help Albania battle multiple large wildfires in August 2025. Wildfires across Albania, fueled by a severe heatwave and strong winds, have caused fatalities, injuries, and the evacuation of numerous villages. Albanian officials praised the UAE's swift and efficient support, highlighting deep bilateral relations and critical international cooperation during the crisis. Overview of the Albania wildfire crisis Albania has been enduring a severe wildfire emergency, with at least 37 forest fires reported nationwide within 24 hours at the peak of the outbreak. More than 30 of these fires remained active as of early August, ravaging forested areas particularly in the provinces of Elbasan, Vlora, and Berat. The wildfires have resulted in tragic consequences including one elderly man's death from smoke inhalation, eight injuries, and widespread evacuations of villages to ensure civilian safety. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Local authorities have reported that some fires originated from accidental blazes that quickly escalated due to dry conditions and strong winds. The southern city of Delvina saw unprecedented fire activity threatening urban zones, prompting emergency evacuations and military support to contain the flames. The heatwave plaguing Albania and neighbouring countries intensified the risk, worsening the scale and speed of the fires. UAE firefighting support mission Following the directives of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a highly trained and equipped UAE firefighting team arrived in Albania on August 11, 2025. The mission aimed to bolster Albanian firefighting efforts with: Qualified firefighting personnel experienced in complex wildfire suppression. Helicopters conducting multiple sorties over affected areas including Petrela and Gramsh, dropping water and retardants. Modern firefighting equipment and materials suited to handle large-scale forest fires in challenging terrain. Despite difficult weather and fire conditions, the UAE team's deployment has been lauded by Albanian officials for its quick impact and strategic effectiveness, demonstrating strong bilateral ties and regional solidarity in times of environmental crisis. Regional and international collaboration Albania has received firefighting support from several countries in addition to the UAE, including Czechia, Slovakia, Greece, and European Union Member States. International aircraft, ground teams, and coordination centers have been mobilized under various frameworks, such as the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. This multi-national cooperation has been critical in managing the widespread fire outbreaks and protecting populated and ecologically sensitive areas. National Civil Protection authorities in Albania have also intensified preparedness and response, conducting large-scale wildfire emergency exercises earlier in 2025 to build readiness for precisely such scenarios. The ongoing collaborative firefighting efforts reflect a shared commitment to combating climate-driven disasters in the Mediterranean region.

There is no…: ChatGPT head on what you need to be successful at OpenAI
OpenAI ChatGPT. OpenAI 's head of ChatGPT says the one trait that determines success at the AI giant isn't technical prowess or prestigious credentials—it's the ability to build "from scratch" without following established blueprints. Nick Turley told tech podcast host Lenny Rachitsky that approaching problems without preconceived solutions is crucial because "there is no analogy for what we're building." Unlike traditional tech companies that can iterate on existing products like Instagram or Google's offerings, OpenAI operates in uncharted territory where employees must create entirely new frameworks. "You can learn from everywhere, but you have to do it from scratch," Turley explained during Saturday's podcast. "That's why that trait tends to make someone effective at OpenAI, and it's something we test for" during the hiring process. Despite receiving criticism for launching features before they're fully polished, Turley defends the approach as essential for learning from real users. "We get a lot of crap for the model chooser," he said, referring to ChatGPT's now-discontinued dropdown menu that allowed users to select between different AI models. However, he argues it's better to "ship out something raw even if it makes less sense" rather than wait for perfection. The company's recent GPT-5 launch exemplifies this philosophy. Following user feedback , OpenAI replaced the confusing model picker with an automated "real-time router" that selects the most appropriate model for each request. Building AI requires constant adaptation and user feedback Turley's core argument centers on the unpredictable nature of AI development . "You won't know what to polish until after you ship," he explained, noting this is "uniquely true in an environment where the properties of your product are emergent." This approach means OpenAI employees must comfortable with ambiguity and rapid iteration . Success requires abandoning traditional tech development playbooks and embracing the uncertainty that comes with pioneering artificial intelligence technol
