Principal Secretary (PS) Oluga Calls for Action-Oriented Approach at Global Financing Facility Meeting
On the sidelines of the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, PS for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga joined the Global Financing Facility in a breakfast meeting where he underscored the vital role the organization plays in the medical space, particularly in strengthening the health workforce, commodity visibility, and reducing women and child mortalities by boosting blood reserves.
He outlined Kenya's advancement in the digitization of health records to enhance data use and noted that Kenya was proud to be part of the Global Financing Facility, which has worked quite well so far. He, however, challenged the institution to re-engineer some of its processes to enhance stakeholder cohesiveness and become more action-oriented in implementing decisions.
To fast-track actions, the PS called for the initiation of a Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) framework. He also urged for the swift translation of policies to support devolved units in aligning their goals with national priorities.
He further observed that the global financing landscape has shifted fundamentally and called for a rethinking of strategies and the adoption of scalable innovations to keep up with the changes.

India: Active Covid-19 cases cross 4000, 5 deaths reported in a day
The number of active Covid-19 cases in India is currently 4026, according to data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday. A total of five new Covid-19 deaths have also been reported in the country in the past 24 hours. Kerala continues to have the maximum number of cases, standing at 1416, followed by Maharashtra (494), Gujarat (397), and Delhi (393). Karnataka, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat also recorded a sharp increase in active cases over the last few days. The spike is attributed to a highly transmissible new variant, several Indian media reports say. The highly contagious COVID-19 variant NB.1.8.1, along with LF.7, has been circulating rapidly in India and many other Asian countries. Elderly patients among the decased The five deaths recorded in the past day were one each in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal and two in Maharashtra. Among the deceased were elderly patients, including an 80-year-old male from Kerala with severe pneumonia and a 73-year-old woman in Maharashtra with diabetes and hypertension. West Bengal reported its first COVID-related death of 2025 on Tuesday. A 43-year-old woman from Alipore in Kolkata, who had been on ventilator support at a private hospital for a week, succumbed to the virus. According to hospital sources, she was also suffering from Acute Coronary Syndrome, septic shock, and acute kidney injury. India has has recorded 32 Covid-related deaths since January 1. Severity of infections low Officials from the Indian Council of Medical Research and the health ministry have stated that the COVID-19 situation in India is being closely monitored while stressing that the severity of infections is low, with most of the patients being under home care and that there was no cause for worry. Dr Rajiv Behl, Director General of ICMR, on June 2 stated that genome sequencing of samples in West and South have shown that the variants leading to the current rise in cases are not severe and are sub variants of Omicron only.

Kenya: No More Silos in the Health Sector, Cabinet Secretary (CS) Duale Assures Development Partners
Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale has assured Development Partners in Health, Kenya (DPHK), of the government's resolve to eliminate fragmentation in the health sector through full digitization. Speaking at a high-level consultative meeting in Nairobi, the CS emphasized that all health systems, existing and new must be certified and coordinated through the Digital Health Agency, as outlined in the Digital Health Act and its regulations. He noted that digitization will enhance service delivery, enable telemedicine, track and trace health products to end users, and ensure only qualified professionals provide care. 'We are building an integrated digital framework to align donor support with national goals and ensure long-term sustainability,' he said. The CS also briefed DPHK on Kenya's Universal Health Coverage (UHC) progress, built on six key pillars: publicly financed primary health care, a rights-based social health insurance model, transparent digital health systems, strengthened emergency and referral services, sustainable health commodity security, and a motivated, well-distributed workforce. He underscored the need for coordinated efforts, aligned investments, and joint accountability, which he termed essential for effective health delivery. He committed to institutionalizing the existing partnership framework based on the principles of 'one national plan, one budget, and one monitoring and evaluation framework.' DPHK Chair Dr. Serawit Bruck-Landais reaffirmed support for Kenya's UHC priorities under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Hon. Duale thanked DPHK for their role in policy dialogue, financing, technical expertise, and capacity building, and called for structured alignment to replace fragmented goodwill. The meeting also reflected on key areas including KEMSA reforms, expenditure tracking, resource mapping and mobilization, and outbreak response strengthening. He was accompanied by Principal Secretaries Dr. Ouma Oluga (Medical Services) and Ms. Mary Muthoni (Public Health and Professional Standards), Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, WHO Representative Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo, and other senior Ministry officials.
