
Odisha to train school, college students on emerging technologies, cybersecurity
BHUBANESWAR: The state government has planned to organise special camps for students on emerging technologies and cybersecurity to help them explore career opportunities in advanced fields and sensitise them on safe online practices and data protection.
Sources said Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC), the technical directorate of the Electronics and IT department, will collaborate with the School and Mass Education (SME) and Higher Education departments for the purpose. OCAC will also rope in an expert agency to organise the training camps at school and college level.
An official from OCAC said though emerging fields like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, virtual reality (VR), data science, and cybersecurity are redefining career landscape and creating new employment opportunities, a considerable gap pertaining to awareness and preparedness among students regarding these advancements and their career prospects still exists in the state.

Alternative data sources help in 'proactive intervention' for growth: CEA
Alternative data sources arising as the 'byproduct of everyday digital interactions' can help policymakers in providing "proactive intervention" for economic growth, said V Anantha Nageswaran, India's chief economic advisor, on Thursday. 'It is important to note that the value of alternate data is not in its volume or novelty, but in the distinctive lens it offers,' he said at the National Workshop on Alternate Data Sources and Frontier Technologies for Policy Making. The two-day event in New Delhi is organised by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). 'These data sources enable policymakers to move from retrospective diagnostics to proactive intervention. It captures emergent behaviour and reflects the lived experience of economic agents that conventional aggregates sometimes cannot.' It is important that researchers understand the huge amounts of data that is being generated, as it helps in improving the forecast accuracy of economic aggregates such as consumption, gross domestic product and investments, said Nageswaran. 'For example, satellite-based night-time luminosity has been used to indicate economic activity in regions with delayed or weak statistical reporting. The satellite data can help policymakers detect cropping patterns, assess soil moisture, and detect early signs of drought. These insights can inform timely decisions on input provisioning, crop insurance payouts, and regional procurement strategies.' Suman K Bery, vice-chairperson of NITI Aayog, told the workshop conventional data should be integrated with alternate sources while ensuring quality. 'The insights from traditional as well as alternate data sources need to be strengthened with emphasis on data processing and assimilation at the same time,' said Bery. Saurabh Garg, secretary at MoSPI, listed five building blocks for enhancing harmonisation of data. These are meta data structures, international and national classifications, unique identifiers, self-quality assessment tools and reconciliation of diverse data to achieve such endeavours. Nageswaran said data generated by statistical systems and alternate sources complement rather than substitute each other. The latest trends in technology, like artificial intelligence and Internet of things, have to go hand in hand with skilling manpower.

Another US-based semicon co to set up project in Bengal
Kolkata: After GlobalFoundries (GF), another US-based semiconductor company — Santech Global Inc — has expressed its interest in setting up a project in Bengal, the state govt said after US Consul General Kathy Giles-Diaz met Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna on Wednesday. Based in New Jersey, Santech Global specialises in semiconductors and nanoelectronics. "We are in consultation with the company to extend required support," an official said. He added that Santech Global setting up a project in Bengal would contribute in the creation of a robust semiconductor ecosystem in the state and open up more economic opportunities. The state govt further said GF has sought additional space to expand operations. The GF project was announced in Sept last year during a meeting between then-US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The CM had earlier stated that necessary land had already been provided to GF — around 13,000 sq ft in the Software Technology Park of India (STPI) at Sector V. GF has asked for another 19,000 sq ft and the CM has assured to look into the request. On Wednesday, the CM and the US Consul discussed the GF Kolkata Power Center, set to come up in collaboration with the US. The CM said the project would be a significant achievement for the state and expressed hope that once in place, it would generate substantial employment. According to an official, the new semiconductor fabrication unit will focus on advanced sensing, communication and power electronics for national security as well as next-generation telecommunications and green energy applications. The official further said GF is a major semiconductor manufacturing company that produces microchips used in electronic devices such as smartphones, computers and cars. He added that GF would also set up a fabless centre for design and testing. Officials said semiconductor units in Bengal would aid research and development in chip manufacturing, and cause major leaps in the fields of Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and data centres.
