It may not be your birthday but you're the one getting the gifts. Digital travel platform Agoda is turning 20 on May 19, and it plans to celebrate with a "global birthday sale".
The company will be giving discounts of up to 70% on their platform.
"As we celebrate Agoda's 20th birthday, we can proudly say that Agoda has become one of Asia Pacific's preferred travel marketplaces," Agoda's CEO, Omri Morgenshtern, said in a press statement.
He added that the company's success comes from its strong tech foundation and "deep understanding of Asian cultures".
It plans to keep improving with Artificial Intelligence and other tools to offer more personalised travel options. To meet customers', Agoda has developed a search experience that assists travellers in finding and booking their trip with ease.
It does so by performing daily tasks that include handling one trillion price checks, recording over two billion user interactions, and running over 1,000 experiments to improve user experience.
It also performs the monthly task of processing 12 petabytes (PB) of data, which translates to 12,000,000,000,000,000 bytes of yearly storage.
The travel platform also gives back to the community, especially in the APAC region, through campaigns like Eco Deals, which has raised over RM5.7mil for wildlife conservation and tech workshops for students in Thailand.
Agoda's 20th Birthday Sale will run from May 7-21 on Agoda.com and through its mobile app.

US$84bil short book putting pressure on India's rupee

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee is emerging Asia's worst performer this quarter and may continue to lag peers as the central bank aims to avert a depletion in its foreign-exchange reserves, according to analysts. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had dollar repayments of near record high of US$84.3bil as of March as indicated by its net short forwards position, a measure of the amount of greenback it has agreed to sell at a future date. That may pile pressure on the RBI to buy dollars to prevent a drain on its reserves and lead to the rupee falling to 86.50 per dollar by end-December, according to IDFC First Bank Ltd. The currency is likely to weaken to 87.50 per dollar from 85.5813 last Friday, according to estimates by Commerzbank AG. The rupee is on track to 'underperform even as the dollar remains under pressure,' Barclays Bank Plc strategists including Mitul Kotecha wrote in a note. The RBI is expected 'to be focused on replenishing its foreign exchange buffers while allowing its forwards book to run off.' The RBI will likely avoid keeping a large book as it represents a large potential drain on reserves, said Gaura Sen Gupta, chief economist at IDFC First Bank. The rupee has fallen 0.1% this quarter, missing out on a rally against the dollar that has lifted other emerging Asian currencies amid outflows from India's bond market. RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra has been flexible in allowing the currency to transition to a market-determined trading regime. Reserves are expected to cushion volatility in the exchange rate and build resilience to the increasing reoccurrence of geopolitical and economic shocks, the central bank in a report last week. The RBI's short dollar book up to three months stood at about US$24bil while the three-month to one-year bucket was at US$40bil, according to central bank data. — Bloomberg

China's 2025 LNG imports expected to fall in unusual downturn, analysts say

BEIJING/SINGAPORE: China's annual imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) are forecast to decline for the first time in three years on weak industrial demand and strong domestic and piped gas supply, according to revised forecasts from five research firms. A decline in imports at the world's top LNG buyer would drive up global supply and drag Asian spot prices, which are down 12 per cent so far this year. Imports are set to fall between 6 per cent and 11 per cent from the 76.65 million metric tons shipped last year. Previous estimates had noted that imports were to hit an all-time high as economic stimulus measures from Beijing were expected to lift industrial demand. However, US tariffs have had a significant impact on China's exports, said Rystad's analyst Xiong Wei "China's consumer price index has also posted year-on-year declines for several consecutive months, reflecting weak consumer confidence," said Xiong. Weak industrial demand and a mild winter have hit natural gas consumption overall, according to analysts at Rystad, Kpler and ICIS. Consumers are increasingly opting for the cheaper domestically produced gas or pipeline imports, they added. The import fall would also be an unusual blip in a sector that has otherwise recorded steady growth. China's LNG imports last contracted in 2022 as demand tumbled during the pandemic lockdowns, according to customs data. China imports fell to 20 million metric tons during the first four months of this year, down from nearly 29 million tons in the corresponding period last year, customs data showed. "Even with a sudden and sharp rebound in the second half, it wouldn't be enough to offset the weakness seen so far," said Yuanda Wang, a senior analyst at ICIS. Rystad Energy estimates that gas consumption for the industrial and chemical sectors combined will fall by roughly 1 per cent. Demand from the industrial and chemical sectors usually grows by 10 to 15 bcm each year, according to analysts from Kpler. DEMAND WANES Weaker demand in China is already showing up in import statistics as Chinese buyers cut back on purchases from major producers like Australia. Imports from Australia, Malaysia and Russia were all down more than 20 per cent year-on-year during the January–to-April period, according to Chinese customs data. Australia, China's top LNG supplier in 2024, shipped 6.38 million tons to China in the first four months of 2025, down 24 per cent from a year earlier, according to China customs data. Kpler data showed the decline came mainly from long-term contract volumes, while spot purchases held steady.
