Shangela accuser Eric Poff shares why it took nearly 8 years to come forward

Yahoo26-02-2025

Eric Poff, the accuser behind the latest sexual assault lawsuit filed against celebrity drag entertainer Shangela, is ready to share his side of the story.
"This whole experience feels like I won a lottery that I didn't want to sign up for," Poff tells Out, "that I never asked to join."
On Monday, Poff filed a complaint against Shangela — whose real name is Chantaize Darius Jeremy Pierce, informally known as DJ — in the state of New York with detailed allegations of sexual assault and rape. Twenty-four hours later, Poff, who is also known by his adult film star name Dakota Payne, shared his story exclusively with Out.
Poff and Pierce met in 2017 while filming Hurricane Bianca: From Russia With Hate. Poff was working as a production assistant, and Pierce starred in the movie as an actor.
"In working on the set, I got to know the cast and crew," Poff recalls. "A select number of the crew and cast had gone out a handful of times out in Hell's Kitchen to little gay bars, post-shooting hangouts. It wasn't until production had wrapped and I'd gone out to hang out with DJ one-on-one that this night happened."
Leading up to that night out, Poff describes having a "friendly co-worker" relationship with Pierce. "I'm a fan of Drag Race [and] I was a fan of DJ's, so I felt comfortable. I thought I felt safe, hanging out with someone who I thought that I knew based on limited experience working with them and having seen them on TV."
As detailed in Monday's complaint, Poff had "one or two drinks" before reportedly losing consciousness. Poff's next memory, as he recalls, took place inside a hotel room while he was anally penetrated by a man he did not know. Pierce, according to Poff, watched it unfold from the corner of the room. The complaint goes on to allege that "Pierce then anally penetrated Plaintiff without his consent."
"I don't think I was meant to gain any kind of consciousness," Poff says. "I don't think that I was meant to see anything or have any memory of experience. I think I was meant to have gone out, wake up, and be like, 'Oh, you were crazy, hahaha, that happened. Goodbye,' like he's done with so many other fans."
Pierce's defense, Poff says, alleges that the two "went out that night, met up with someone, had a threesome, and joked about it the next morning, and then Dakota suddenly just asked me for payment."
That isn't Poff's recollection of the events.
"I don't have any contact in my phone where it's like, 'Oh, remember that time we had a threesome with DJ.' There is no person in my life. I have no recollection. We did not meet up with anyone that night. That didn't happen. This John Doe person, I just have a recollection of what he looked like and what was being done when I did come to. He was not there in the morning when we allegedly woke up and joked around about it. There was no third person, there was no talks of, 'Oh, wasn't that crazy?' None of that."
Following the alleged assault, Poff recalled the experience with mutual friends in an attempt "to let people know what happened." However, Poff believes that things kept being swept under the rug. He often heard advice like,"You just need to hold your head up high and be ready to work in environments with people like that."
After years of silence and ruminating on the experience, running into Pierce at a bar in West Hollywood in 2024 was a turning point for Poff. "I was just festering and frustrated and felt powerless," Poff says. "I just happened to see him, and as calmly and as collected as I could, I went and I let him know how I felt."
Pierce's reaction pushed Poff to share his story. "It was the dismissal. It was the change of look in his eyes when he looked up from his table, surely thinking this was going to be another fan encounter, someone singing his praise. He recognized me and the shift in his face ... and then how easily it was for him to just say, 'I'm sorry you feel that way.' And the people at his table wouldn't even look up. They wouldn't look at me. Eyes down the whole time. The whole thing felt so awful. I just felt compelled to make a video because that's the only thing that was in my control."
Pierce first rose to fame in 2010 as Shangela on the second season of RuPaul's Drag Race, quickly becoming an iconic figure on the reality competition show. In the years since, Shangela has appeared on Dancing With the Stars, A Star Is Born, Hurricane Bianca, We're Here, and many more television shows.
Poff's lawyer, James A. Vagnini, says it's time for Pierce to take accountability.
"I think it's very telling that [Pierce's] response has been to go on attack. It's very rare that I've had a case where it's just been one survivor that's come forward and nobody else has ever said, 'Me too.' [That is] the whole basis of the Me Too movement. It's just a way to shield and put more fear into people into not coming forward and in this situation."
Vagnini also claims that "DJ and his legal team are using politics and the community as a weapon back. 'This is damaging to the community...' Well, what's damaging to the community is the fact that there's a predator running around drugging people. There's a pattern of it that now dates back to 2014 from the people we've spoken to."
This is why, he says, big defense lawyers are brought in — "because they've got to limit the amount of exposure that their client has and keep as many people from coming forward. Taking accountability, which is the right thing to do, is really never an option, no matter the amount of evidence I've got, no matter going all the way in a legal claim. It is the fear of the floodgates opening that forces them into this position because otherwise there could be a conversation out here. There could have been a conversation had in L.A. when Eric ran into him and opened the door."
At the end of the day, Pierce is "the only one who knows what he's done already," says Vagnini. "But there's a lot of other people out there, and there will be more to come, as you see in the next steps."
Vagnini claims that he's made contact with other survivors in other cities who have shared similar stories, "including a John Doe being in the room when they wake up. I just really want to address that, as a member of the community, they're doing a bigger disservice to the community by not taking some level of accountability and ownership in this. This isn't a drag issue. This is a human issue. Men, women every day go through experiences like this, unfortunately. To mask it in sort of what we're doing to the community and drag in particular is really, really offensive."
Pierce and his lawyer have not responded to Out's request for comment.
Meanwhile, Poff remains steadfast. "I understand how it upsets people. And trust me, I did not want to do this. As someone who also does drag, as someone who has performed in adult entertainment, I don't want to have to be this person to call him out, but it seems like I'm the only one that can."
"We have to hold our own accountable," Poff says.
Minutes before this Out interview with Eric Poff was published, Shangela shared a new statement on Instagram claiming to be "falsely accused in the most heinous ways." The drag star added:
"I'm advised to stay silent, and I'm doing my best to continue on without engaging in a back and forth with dishonest people seeking money or a moment."

'King of Drag's Dr. Wang Newton says the kings' moment is now: 'we're no longer chasing approval'

While Dr. Wang Newton is already one of the most successful and well known drag kings in the biz, he's about to strut his stuff for a brand new audience on a new, massive stage as one of the permanent judges on the upcoming — and highly anticipated — competition series King of Drag. It's a moment that's been a long time coming for the drag community and one that has Wang asking the same question we are: 'Why did it take this long for kings to take center stage?' he poses to PRIDE. 'After 16 years of RuPaul's Drag Race, 20+ global spinoffs, and nine years of Dragula, the real question is: why not yesterday?' It's a hypothetical question but one that's worthy of being answered — even if doing so requires taking a hard look at the queer community and who we choose to uplift. Thankfully, King of Drag looks to be equal parts entertaining and restorative representation. When Wang says it's been a long time coming, he means a long time. 'I joke that kings go way back — from the Tang Dynasty to the Wang Dynasty — because theatrical male impersonation has existed for over 1,300 years. We've always been here. Literally, facts.' While the inequity between representation of kings and queens is unquestionable, Wang sees this moment as a change for the kings to be seen on their own terms. 'No 'pick me,' no victim energy — we're no longer chasing approval from spaces that were never interested in including us,' he says. 'The truth is, [The Boulet Brother's] Dragula led the way with real inclusivity, and now King of Drag follows suit. And man oh man, do we have some snazzy suits!' TeAra DeBerry In the same way that queens generally explore heightened versions of femininity, kings play with the ideas and tropes of masculinity. Politically and culturally, this has the potential to become a hot-button topic, particularly in a time when discussions around masculinity have become so fraught, specifically in right-wing spaces that also tend to look for excuses to turn drag into a wedge issue. Wang, however, hopes audiences see kinging generally and King of Drag specifically as an exploration of masculinity that makes much more space for its expression and celebration. 'Masculinity isn't a monolith — it's a mood board,' he explains. 'Drag kings came with the remix and the beat drop. If traditional masculinity boxed us in, an all-king show is the jailbreak. Flipping the script to liberated masculinity is kinda hot.' Wang has high hopes for the series, and the impact it will have on kings moving forward. 'I hope it cuts the velvet rope and leaves the door swinging open,' he says. 'After 20 years in the game, I want to see something new. No more comparing apples to oranges with drag queens. I want a surge of facial hair absurdity, feral kings, and quiet masterful kings emerging from the woodwork.' We couldn't agree more. But that's not all: like his fellow King of Drag judge Tenderoni, Wang wants to see a positive economic impact for kings as well. 'Just for fun, maybe some actual social impact — like closing the gender wage gap, while performing gender with our gap,' he says with a wink. 'I've been blessed on this journey — but I can't keep all this Wang Privilege to myself!' View this post on Instagram A post shared by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻 (王扭臀) (@drwangnewton) Speaking of Wang himself, he shares that despite his decades in the biz, this experience caused his personal drag to evolve, too. 'This was my Wang 3.0 glow-up — the Outer Wang got some new polished lewks, but the Inner Wang glow turned up a notch, too.' But most of all, Wang is thrilled the world is going to get to see kings on the kind of platform they deserve. As for what to expect this season, he says to hold on to your mustache! 'Fans may think they've seen it all: Death drops, reveals, rinse, repeat. But kings do their own thing. Expect bold choices, big charm, and a whole new spectrum of sexy!' King of Drag premieres June 22 on Revry. Stay tuned for more updates about the series on PRIDE as they roll out, and watch the teaser trailer below. - YouTube

A Guide to Eating and Drinking Through D.C. Pride

The month of June has always been an exciting time in D.C., with Capital Pride Alliance putting on fun events and an exuberant parade; gay bars planning wild parties ; and restaurants around D.C. putting out their rainbow flags and hosting extravagant drag brunches. The list of events and specials is even longer this year, with World Pride bringing an even bigger parade and street festival to the District. This guide includes the best LGBTQ+ Pride-themed events across D.C. in the month of June. (And if you're looking for one-time drag brunches, scroll to the bottom.) For D.C.'s best gay bars, go here . Barrel House Cafe & Bar 1341 14th Street NW The June pop-up at this new Logan Circle spot is fairy garden-themed, with plenty of cabaret nights, live music events, and late-night dance parties to celebrate Pride all month long. Check out the second night of ElixHER World Pride Cabaret on Sunday, June 8 and a perfect seat to view the World Pride parade on Saturday, June 7 from Barrel House's new patio with live DJs, a parade live stream, and even bottle service. A special Pride menu will also be available for all of June in collaboration with Absolut Vodka. Aslin Beer 1740 14th Street NW Aslin is also a fantastic spot to watch the start of the World Pride parade in a huge beer garden overlooking 14th Street NW. The brewery is also collaborating with Rainbow Families again to serve a special double IPA beer called Now More Than Ever, with flavors of stone fruit and citrus with a bit of coconut. A percentage of each purchase of the fruity beer will go towards Rainbow Families' mission of supporting LGBTQ+ families and prospective parents. After a few beers you might even want to buy some of their Pride merch, including bright T-shirts and beer glasses. Via Sophia 1001 14th Street NW This Italian restaurant in the Hamilton Hotel is another great parade viewing spot, with an extra special World Pride Parade Viewing Party featuring RuPaul's Drag Race Season 13 winner Symone and Drag Race All Stars Derrick Barry and Miz Cracker. The Via Sophia patio peers directly into the parade route and the kitchen will be serving up themed cocktails and brunch bites amid DJ sets. Fashion icon Nigel Barker will also be serving up tastings of his signature Barker Martinis at the hotel's micro-bar, Society, during the parade. Café Riggs 900 F Street NW This elegant restaurant in the bottom of the Riggs Hotel has rolled out a thoughtful Pride Icons cocktail menu for June to pair with the contemporary French-American cuisine. The Harvey Milk is a bourbon and maderia drink that actually includes clarified milk and maple, inspired by Milk's favorite breakfast of matzoh meal pancakes, while a zero-proof Elton John spritz celebrates the musician's 34th year of sobriety. All four of the thoughtful cocktails include playful illustrations of each icon, drawn by LGBTQ artist Diego Blanco. Pair them with an order of french fries plus caviar and creme fraiche. Atlas Ivy City 2052 West Virginia Avenue NE The Atlas Brewery location up in Ivy City is throwing an LGBTQ Benefit Show on Saturday, June 14 from 2 to 8 p.m., with seven musical acts from across the Northeast. All ticket proceeds will benefit The Trevor Project, SMYAL, and HIPS. The $15 tickets are available on Eventbrite. Love, Makoto 200 Massachusetts Avenue NW If you'd rather watch the parade from a sunny spot or celebrate Pride in a park, this Japanese food hall is selling picnic packs for two with a Rainbow Roll, kale soba salad, two rainbow vanilla doughnuts, and two yuzu lemonades. The $45 picnic can be ordered at Love on the Run in-person or on Love, Makoto's website, plus you can get delivery through Uber Eats and DoorDash. Make it a boozy picnic by switching out the lemonades for Makoto margaritas or Chika Sake Cups, with the Party Pack version costing $65. Plus, all proceeds from any heart-shaped, rainbow vanilla doughnuts sold during June will go towards The Trevor Project. Lulu's Winegarden 1940 11th Street NW A special Love is Love at Lulu's cocktail menu is being served at this U Street-adjacent wine bar, with drinks like a purple-hued Taste the Rainbow gin, creme de violet, and fresh raspberry, and a strawberry-coconut daiquiri called Come to My Window. A dollar from each Pride cocktail and rainbow bottles of True Colours Cava sold will go towards the Human Rights Campaign. 1785 Florida Avenue NW The essential pupusas place at the foot of Adams Morgan unleashes a new lineup of summer cocktails just in time for Pride Month. Every $1 from each one sold goes to Ayuda in support of immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities in the DMV. In addition, a new Taco Tuesday revamp calls for 10 tacos and three sauces for $40 and a marg carafe-and-taco trio combo for $35. MXDC 1610 14th Street NW Located right along the Capital Pride Parade route, MXDC by Todd English invites attendees to celebrate with a one-day burrito stand on Saturday, June 7. Swing by during parade hours to grab a $15 burrito (chicken, steak, or mushroom), $12 margs, $8 Coronas, and more. Grab a burrito and margarita for $25 (or by the bottle for $40). A limited number of prime-time outdoor VIP tables are available by reservation. A speedy drag brunch round-up There are plenty of fabulous year-round drag brunches in D.C., but a few restaurants are throwing one-off drag brunches to celebrate Pride this weekend. Here are a few highlights: Arrels is throwing an unlimited tapas brunch on Sunday, June 8, with performances by De'ior Kouture, Nadia Cole, Jalah Nicole, and Ervena Chloe, hosted by Bombalicious Eklaver. The $60 brunch goes from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. RSVP on the Arlo Hotels website. (333 G Street NW) Lyle's famous drag brunch has a special visitor this weekend, with Miss Leggs Benedict returning for a very special Pride Drag brunch on Saturday, June 7. She and Hennessey will be hosting the bottomless cocktails brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Make a reservation on SevenRooms. (1731 New Hampshire Avenue NW) Hotel Monaco's Dirty Habit is hosting a drag brunch with Drag Race star Alyssa Edwards, along with Utica, Mercedes Iman Diamond, Crimsyn, and Druex Sidora, on Sunday, June 8.
