‘We want Joe!' - Thomas upstages headliner Anthony Hamilton at Women's Day concert
Vusi Nova was not being dramatic for losing his cool with the technical team because their mediocrity nearly ruined the entire night.
Zonke brought a feminine touch, and fans said they'd pay to see her 10 more times.
If performances and energy from music fans were anything to go by, the Women's Day Celebration with Anthony Hamilton, Joe Thomas, Zonke, Sjava and Vusi Nova – held at the Wanderers Cricket Stadium on 9 August – may as well have been renamed to Joe, We Wanna Party.
While Hamilton was widely advertised as the main headliner, conducting most of the media interviews, when it came to crunch time, Thomas' performance shone brighter and was more memorable.

The concert was not without challenges as the technical team had to pull Thomas off the stage for nearly 20 minutes.
This as the Good Girls hitmaker's attempts to serenade the crowd with his guitar skills proved futile as the audience could not hear the strings and occasionally, his mic became inaudible.
Vusimuzi Nongxa, popularly known as Vusi Nova, delivered the first performance of the evening.
He had initially been perceived as a drama king by some audience members when he lost his cool with the technical team over continuous sound glitches.
However, as the glitches persisted through Zonke and Thomas' performances, it became clear that Vusi Nova's outrage had been justified.
The technical mishaps reminded me of how paying fans had to endure a similar disappointment during Lauryn Hill's concert, more than a decade ago in 2012, where music lovers experienced delays of nearly 45 minutes due to sound issues.
More recently in 2023, Deborah Cox's tour was also marred with similar glitches.
Once the system was back up, Thomas melted hearts with his own hits and other R&B favourites, such as Softest Place on Earth by popular girl band Xscape, the timeless Missing You by Case – who collaborated with Thomas in Faded Pictures and Brandy Norwood's Never Say Never.
Fears that he was reverting to last year's show when he performed two of the songs from that concert, including Stutter were quickly wiped away by the switch to All The Things and All That I Am hits.
Before there was Beyonce's If I Were a Boy and Ciara's Like a Boy, there was Thomas' What If A Woman.
Love Scene, I Wanna Know and No One Else Comes Close almost brought some people to tears with the realisation that the R&B crooner with more than 10 albums to his name knew precisely which of his music reverberated with fans in Mzansi.
However, the same cannot be said of Hamilton, because while the Charlene hitmaker did eventually deliver that track, sing-alongs were few and far between during his performance.
For an artist who performs in this country regularly, reactions to the Grammy Award-winning musician gave the impression that his set was not made for a South African crowd in particular.
This may have been unintended on Thomas' part, but Hamilton was certainly upstaged. 'We want Joe,' chants from the crowd filled the stadium on multiple occasions.
Vusi Nova connected quite well with the fans, closing off his performance by paying homage to late afro-soul star Bulelwa Mkutukana (also known as Zahara), who passed in December 2023 in a moving delivery of his tribute hit Asiphelelanga.
Rose among the thorns, Zonke's feminine touch to the celebration that featured mostly men in music was among the most highly anticipated performances of the evening, with some fans saying they had seen her multiple times before and would pay to see her a few times more.

‘No Rain, No Flowers' Review: The Black Keys Attempt a Reset
The Black Keys had a rough year in 2024, which was notable because the two-piece rock outfit—singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney—has historically been light on drama. A series of undersold arena gigs led to a canceled tour and the firing of their management. After the announcement of the band's participation in a pre-election show sponsored by a pro-cryptocurrency organization, the Black Keys seemed lost and in danger of losing what had taken decades to build. Yes, at one point there was a minor feud with Jack White of fellow Midwestern blues-inspired garage-rock duo the White Stripes, and Mr. Carney has posted playfully confrontational rhetoric online from time to time. But personality has taken a backseat to music through most of the group's career, so it was odd for its members to be at the center of controversy. From its title on down, 'No Rain, No Flowers' (Easy Eye Sound/Warner), the band's 13th album, out now, feels like an attempt to get back on track. It comes across as the Black Keys retreating to a place of comfort, as it imbues its rock with a bit more pop while adding a fashionable smidgen of psychedelia.

Taylor Swift is driving everyone crazy (in a good way)
Musicians have long since figured out how to turn their album announcements into online frenzies. But it takes a different kind of superstar, and fanbase, to turn a release into a mystery treasure hunt. After a period of relative quiet, Taylor Swift appeared out of thin air to announce a new album, called 'The Life of a Showgirl.' Or she announced an announcement — she'll talk about the album first on her boyfriend's podcast later this week. This announcement arrived at the same time as a GQ profile of that boyfriend, Travis Kelce, making fans feel for the first time that they were really hearing from and seeing the couple, as a couple, directly. As a Swiftie, I can attest that we fans remain in a constant state of hunger for any dregs of connection, forced to search out breadcrumbs in her songs, music videos or even social posts that leave us spiraling (or 'clowning' as we like to say). The singer rarely does interviews and when she does they're in a much more formal setting — certainly more formal than on an often-meandering podcast with her boyfriend and his brother. This time? 'We're about to do a f*cking podcast!' Swift exclaimed in a preview for the episode of 'New Heights.' That podcast is expected to be released on August 13 at 7 p.m. ET. How excited are fans? One of my Swiftie friends even switched flights to ensure they're not 30,000 feet in the air when the podcast is released. Unable to wait a day to hear the podcast, eager fans have spent the hours since the announcement reviewing the hints that Swift appeared to sprinkle throughout her work in the past few years, pointing toward the album that fans took to calling 'TS12.' For at least a year, theorizing has revolved around the number 12 and the color orange. As always, the Swifties were right. On Monday morning a carousel of 12 photos was posted to Taylor Nation's Instagram with the caption, 'Thinking about when she said 'See you next era…'' All those photos feature Swift in orange outfits that she wore while on The Eras Tour. There was also the famous orange door of the Eras tour, featured on a screen on stage as she performed the last song of the show 'Karma' which left many fans frantic and theorizing. That same orange color was featured in the background of this weeks' teaser for the 'New Heights' episode. Prior to the announcement that Swift would be the special guest, many fans had already put the pieces together based on the background color, the silhouette and the fact it was posted along with Taylor Nation's Instagram post. And before all of that, there was the TikTok video that Swift shared in October before her show at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. Swift is seen walking near section A12 — for fans, that signaled to August 12, the announcement day. If you think that sounds conspiracy-minded, a countdown appeared on Swift's website to 12:12am Eastern on August 12, which is when the name of her 12th studio album was released. So if you have a Swiftie in your life, this is why they sound a little loopy, raving about random numbers and colors, as they put on every orange piece of clothing they could find. But tell us while you wait — what else have you noticed?
