Qatar in talks to host 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Sky News22-07-2025
Qatar has confirmed it is in talks to host the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics and bring the games to the Middle East for the first time.
The Qatar Olympic Committee said it wants to "showcase the potential of Arab youth on the global stage" - building on the hosting of the 2022 World Cup.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC), under the new leadership of Kirsty Coventry, has pledged to involve its members more in the selection of host cities.
Qatar had been overlooked for the 2032 Olympics because Thomas Bach's IOC fast-tracked Brisbane as host under a preferred bidder process.
The Gulf nation could face a neighbouring challenge from Saudi Arabia, which is staging the men's World Cup in 2034 after also investing its wealth into sports megaprojects.
India is also a potentially strong challenger with Nita Ambani, an influential IOC member. She is the wife of India's richest man, Mukesh Ambani, who heads the Reliance Industries conglomerate.
"I think if we can embrace new regions across the entire movement, it opens this up for so many different opportunities, including revenue growth, including being able to reach new audiences."

The Qatar Olympic Committee said it is already involved in "ongoing discussions" with the IOC as part of the host city election process and has 95% of the required sports infrastructure already in place.
Qatar Olympic Committee president Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani said: "Our participation in the ongoing dialogue around hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036 reflects a national vision that sees sport as a driver of development and a platform for promoting mutual understanding and peace among nations.
"We have made sport a central pillar of our national strategy, and today, we aspire to elevate that role regionally and globally by presenting a new model - one that reflects the diversity of our region and celebrates its authentic human values."

Johnny Manziel leads pack of sports stars taking part in season four of Special Forces

Former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel headlines the pack of sports stars taking part in season four of Fox reality competition Special Forces: World's Toughest Test, which premiers next month. The quasi-military training reality show will put the 18 contestants through intense conditions and tests to see which can brave the elements similar to what members of the United States Special Forces go through. Half the cast has connections to the sports world, with former NFL players Andrew East, Randall Cobb, and Eric Decker also on the cast. Decker and East will also be joined by their respective wives - Jessie James Decker and Shawn Johnson East. Johnson East is a former Olympic gold-medal gymnast for the United States, who wore the Stars and Stripes at the 2008 games in Beijing. A unique connection to the sports world exists with Brianna 'Chickenfry' LaPaglia, a poplar face within Barstool. Rounding out those with a sports connection on the cast are former NBA star Nick Young and longtime United States soccer defender Christie Rampone. Outside the sports world, fans of the show were mostly aghast at the inclusion of 'hate crime hoaxer' Jussie Smollett, who wisecracked to his 4.5M Instagram followers on Wednesday: 'It was at this moment I said… "I should've just done The Masked Singer."' The disgraced 43-year-old swore he was attacked in 2019 by two Trump supporters, who turned out to be his former personal trainers the Osundairo Brothers, and they claimed he hired them to pour bleach on him and put a noose around his neck in order to boost his celebrity profile. Jussie only served six days of his 150-day sentence for five counts of felony disorderly conduct before the Illinois Supreme Court reversed his conviction on November 21 citing his sweetheart plea deal with Cook County State's Attorney Kim Fox. Someone with a sports connection has been part of the winning team each of the previous three seasons with Carli Lloyd, Erin Jackson, and Kayla Nicole all passing the set of tests.

Democratic Los Angeles city councilwoman asks jaw-dropping question to LAFC's new star Son Heung-min

Democratic Los Angeles city councilwoman Heather Hutt hilariously asked LAFC's newest A-list signing, Son Heung-min, if he will help the United States win next summer's World Cup. Son is South Korean. His responsibilities with the American club not doubling into national-team duty for the Stars and Stripes. The World Cup will be hosted primarily in the United States next summer, with SoFi Stadium in nearby Inglewood being the stage for two of the three group-stage games for the American squad against yet-to-be-determined opponents. Son will likely play at the tournament, as South Korea have qualified for the event, which expands to 48 teams in 2026. Hutt came off as excited for her hometown to garner a player of Son's quality but did not appear to understand how the World Cup works. 'How smart is LAFC? Let's give it up, because this is the right time to bring the right person. And no pressure, but when a World Cup comes, we're expecting a win here in Los Angeles for the USA, aren't we? And so we are here to support you to get that done,' Hutt said, staring at Son. Son was introduced by LAFC on Wednesday, with Hutt's comments coming as part of the event to welcome him after he exited Tottenham after 10 years. 'I want to welcome you to our city,' Hutt added. 'This is the way you do it, right? It is Los Angeles. It is a beautiful city. It's somewhere that we call the tapestry, and we love it here, and we're so glad to have you. Your bringing your smile and your talent, your culture, to LAFC.' Daily Mail has reached out to Hutt for clarification on her comments with no response. Hutt gave a little background as the councilwoman representing Los Angeles' 10th District, the home of Koreatown. Hutt stated that Los Angeles' Koreatown has more Koreans than any other city in the United States and has 'the best food' in the country. This is not the first time a world-renowned foreign soccer player has been asked about winning a World Cup upon their arrival on US soil. German sensation Bastian Schweinsteiger, fresh off helping Germany win the 2014 World Cup, was bizarrely asked if he would do the same with the Chicago Fire in 2017.
