Telangana gig workers welcome insurance in new rules

HYDERABAD: Telangana gig workers unions, including IFAT and TGPWU, has welcomed certain provisions of the newly notified Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2025 while raising serious concerns over other aspects.
IFAT general secretary and TGPWU founder president, Shaik Salauddin, lauded the government's decision to mandate health and term insurance for drivers, with coverages of `5 lakh and `10 lakh respectively. He also appreciated the focus on safety protocols, including background checks, induction training, and vehicle safety standards.
However, the unions expressed discontent over several unresolved issues. They reiterated the long-pending demand for a uniform fare policy across the country and urged the government to ban bike taxis operating illegally with private registration plates.
The guidelines also allow fares to spike two to three times during peak demand hours, emergencies, or festivals. While passengers are forced to pay inflated fares, drivers receive only a minimal share of the increased amount and often bear the brunt of customer dissatisfaction.
The unions also fear that the financial liabilities imposed on aggregator companies, such as license fees of `5 lakh and security deposits up to `50 lakh may eventually be shifted onto the drivers through higher commissions or hidden charges.

New cab, auto aggregator rules skewed

Hyderabad: Commuters are at the receiving end of the central government's recently approved sweeping changes to cab and auto-rickshaw aggregator regulations under the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2025, though, ironically, the modifications were made to 'bring greater clarity, equity, and predictability to the sector'. Although the new rules promise a relatively more stable and predictable ecosystem for both commuters and drivers, driven by a demand and supply model, due to certain skewed provisions, the commuters have started feeling the pinch. Even the drivers are not happy, while the aggregators are laughing their way to the bank. There are serious concerns over the lack of uniform fare regulations, unchecked surge pricing, and gaps in enforcement that continue to hurt both customers and drivers across India. K Sridhar, an accountant from Naryanaguda, pointed out that the rides had become costlier not only during the so-called rush hours straining his budgets for important trips, but also left him confused about what makes 'rush hours' and which are 'peak hours'. Speaking to 'The Hans India', he said, earlier the peak or rush hours meant, from the standpoint of commuters, 7 AM to 10 AM when the traffic goes up with most people out on the roads to go to offices or educational institutions. Similarly, during the evenings, 5 PM to 9 PM are considered so when people will be returning to their homes. However, 'for three days from August 13 to 15th, irrespective of the timings, Sridhar had to shell down more than Rs 100 for just 4 to 5 km. When questioned, the auto drivers claimed the fares had gone up due to festive days.

Delivery Rider Falls Into Open Drain, Loses Phone; Union Asks Zomato To Help

Hyderabad: A food delivery worker in Hyderabad fell into a drain while on duty amid heavy rains in the city, prompting calls from the Telangana gig workers' union for accountability from the company. Syed Farhan fell into an open drain on Saturday while on an active Zomato order. His phone was lost in the drain, while his motorcycle got damaged. The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers' Union (TGPWU) questioned if the cost of workers' lives is equivalent to a Rs 10 or 15 rain bonus. "This is not just an accident - it is a direct consequence of platforms prioritising profits over worker safety. God blessed Farhan with his life yesterday, but tomorrow may be too late for another worker," said Shaik Salauddin, TGPWU chief. Urging the food delivery company to take accountability for the accident, Mr Salauddin demanded that the delivery worker's phone be replaced, his bike repaired and his lost income be compensated. The union further called upon delivery platforms to stop risking workers' lives, provide fair rain and surge bonus, and share real-time weather data to allow informed decisions. "This is not about a Rs 10 or Rs 15 rain bonus - it's about whether a worker returns home alive," Salauddin emphasised. TGPWU urged the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to act against companies risking delivery workers' lives. The civic body has already issued advisories to aggregator companies about the dangers of sending riders out in extreme weather, but these warnings continue to be ignored, Mr Salauddin said.
