Australia dump Marnus Labuschagne for first Test against West Indies and recall Sam Konstas

7NEWS6 hours ago

Out-of-sorts Australian veteran Marnus Labuschagne has been axed for the first Test against the West Indies.
Australian selectors released a statement on Friday morning confirming the bombshell decision, while also revealing that exciting young gun Sam Konstas and reserve wicketkeeper Josh Inglis had been recalled.
The series opener kicks off at Bridgetown's Kensington Oval next week and, as expected, vice-captain Steve Smith will also be absent after suffering a gruesome finger injury in the World Test Championship final on the weekend.
'Steve needs more time for the wound to heal so we'll give him another week's rest and assess his functionality after that,' chief selector George Bailey said in a statement.
'We have made the decision to give Josh and Sam the opportunity to replace Steve and Marnus. We are excited to see them get the chance to further their fledgling Test careers.
'In his only opportunity in Test cricket to date, Josh was outstanding in Sri Lanka, showing great intent and ability to put pressure on the opposition.
'Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team.
'He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects.
'We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover. We continue to value his skill and expect him to work through the challenge positively.'
Australia will unveil their batting order and bowling attack closer to the start of the first Test next Wednesday.
But it is the decision to drop Labuschagne that will be the biggest talking point since Bailey took over as chief selector in 2021.
Labuschagne was the top-ranked Test batter in the world as recently as two years ago, but has averaged just 27.82 for the past 12 months.
He was moved from his regular spot at No.3 to open in the World Test Championship final loss to South Africa last week, for returns of 17 and 22.
Konstas's recall comes after he was left out of the team for Sri Lanka, following the teenager's high-profile start to Test life with a half-century on debut on Boxing Day against India.
Selectors opted to go with Travis Head at the top of the order in Galle, given their preference to have him open on spinning wickets.
But that move was only ever temporary, leaving the opening spot free for Labuschagne at Lord's last week and now seemingly Konstas in the West Indies.
Inglis also impressed with a century on debut in Galle in January, before being squeezed out of the side for the Test Championship final.
The decision to drop the 30-year-old Labuschagne comes after former coach Justin Langer urged officials to keep him in the side this week, with his experience valuable.
Usman Khawaja is aged 38 and Smith 36, meaning a transition in the top order looms after David Warner's retirement from Test cricket last year.
'He's actually a very, very important link in this chain,' Langer said on Monday.
'You think about the history of Australian cricket. The best young players come in surrounded by absolute guns.
'Michael Clarke, Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn and Matthew Hayden. They come in and they're around gun players.
'If you just all of a sudden bring a couple of kids in, Cameron Green's still young to the game, and you have to bring another kid in there (to replace Labuschagne).'

‘I don't think it's too serious': Panthers provide Nathan Cleary update ahead of rare match in New Zealand

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary doesn't think his son's groin issue is 'too serious', with the champion halfback expected to be fine to take his place in the side for next Thursday's showdown with the Bulldogs. Nathan Cleary battled a groin complaint in Wednesday's second Origin clash, with the NSW No.7 forced to wear a compression sleeve on his right leg. Cleary didn't kick goals and was kept quiet in the first half, only for the four-time premiership winner to take control as the Blues chased points in a dramatic final 40 minutes. The injury caught everyone off guard, but it's not considered serious at this stage. Cleary was always going to miss Penrith's trip to New Zealand for Saturday's game against the Warriors, with all five of their Origin stars rested, including hat-trick hero Brian To'o, who overcame a hamstring injury to dominate in Perth. 'Nathan had that little groin injury. I'm not too sure how he's going at the moment, but I don't think it's too serious,' Ivan Cleary said in Auckland. 'Bizza (To'o) went into the game with a bit of a hamstring issue but he's come out pretty good.' The undermanned Panthers can jump back inside the top eight with an upset win across the ditch in what will be their first match in Auckland since 2019. Isaah Yeo was still playing in the centres back then, James Maloney was halfback and James Fisher-Harris was still at the club as they overcame two sin bins to win 19-18. Cleary, who used to coach the Warriors, voiced his frustrations recently at the timing of this away trip after Origin that forced him to rest his Blues players given the hectic travel schedule. But he's moved on ahead of two massive matches in five days against a couple of top-four teams coached by two of his former assistants. 'It's disappointing for the New Zealand fans because we haven't played here for six years, so they haven't seen any of our team through that pretty good period,' he said. 'That's a little unfortunate, but I know it must be difficult trying to work out the draw, and everyone has their own hardluck stories.'

Hollywood icon Whoopi Goldberg announces huge partnership with Netball Australia

American actress Whoopi Goldberg and Super Netball might seem an unlikely pairing. But social media videos and two excited executives have brought the entertainment icon and Australian sports league together in a three-year broadcast deal. All Women's Sports Network, co-founded by Goldberg in 2024, took an interest in the sport after two of its heavyweights noticed Super Netball on their social feeds. AWSN reaches 900 million households worldwide. Former NFL player Tony Parrish and George Chung, the San Francisco 49ers' former martial arts coach who co-founded AWSN, reached out to Netball Australia (NA) with an interest to know more. Talks progressed and Friday's partnership is now expected to introduce the league to over 65 new countries. Super Netball balls and merchandise have been express posted to the United States, while Goldberg has shared her excitement about the partnership online. 'I am so proud to be thanking you for joining us on AWSN,' she said, addressing the league in a video statement. 'I see that your fans are really loving you, so we want to make sure that we put you everywhere in the world so that everybody knows about you.' Riding the coat tails of an increasing global appetite for women's sport, NA chief executive Stacey West said the deal will be a powerful tool for exposure. 'Super Netball is no longer a game that fans seek out, it's something they cannot miss,' West said. 'This breakthrough deal puts netball on screens across the globe and cements our place at the forefront of women's sport.' It hasn't been all smooth sailing for the governing body in recent years. The sport hit financial troubles during the COVID-19 pandemic, making headlines for a $4 million debt before protracted pay talks with players led to Kelly Ryan's resignation as NA boss in late 2023. But the Super Netball league audience has grown in the past few years. West has highlighted how the 2024 season resulted in record ratings on Kayo and Foxtel, and an average audience of 57,000 per match. AWSN viewers will have access to 41 Super Netball matches, including finals, through to 2027 under the partnership. 'AWSN shares our vision of taking women's sport to new heights,' West said. 'Together, we're creating a platform for our athletes and game to shine like never before.'

‘I'm not happy for him, but I'm proud': Cameron Munster set to play for Storm after earning Origin comparisons to Wally Lewis

Rival coach Wayne Bennett compared Cameron Munster's performance in game two of the State of the Origin series to something Wally Lewis would have done in the past. But he could be on the receiving end on Saturday, with the Storm five-eighth expected to travel to Sydney to take on the Rabbitohs. The former Maroons coach heaped praise on Munster for his man-of-the-match showing in Perth on Wednesday night, likening it to what Lewis did so many times in the past for his state. Storm coach Craig Bellamy wasn't happy for Munster given he's part of the NSW coaching team, but he was super proud of a man who has matured over the years on and off the field in Melbourne. 'Captaining his state would have been a really proud moment for him and his family and the Storm,' Bellamy said. 'He led them with a lot of energy and really stuck to doing what he does well. 'I'm not really happy for him, but I'm really proud of him. Hopefully, the Blues can get them next time. 'The one thing about Cameron and his whole time here, he's got a genuine care for the club, and I think that's his strong suit. 'He's got a lot of strong suits as a footy player, but he's got a genuine care for what's right for the club and what he can do for the club. That's always stood him in really good stead. 'At times he got a bit loose, but Bianca (his partner) and the kids have sorted that out now.' It's been an emotionally draining few days for Munster, who replaced Daly Cherry-Evans as Queensland captain and then led his state to a crucial win in the wet, with the champion playmaker heading home to Melbourne to be with his family. But he is expected to take his place on Saturday night for the game against Souths at Accor Stadium, with Bellamy confirming that try-scoring winger Xavier Coates would be rested given his history of hamstring injuries. Harry Grant, Trent Loiero and Stefano Utoikamanu are all expected to play, with the Storm's success built on stars wanting to back up to reward their teammates for helping them make representative sides. 'Xavier won't be playing, but the rest of them have been left alone,' Bellamy said, with Sua Fa'alogo likely to come onto the wing. 'Munster has come back (to Melbourne) to see his kids because he missed them, but he's not trained today. I'm pretty sure he'll play, but the rest of them we'll have to see how they come up and go from there. 'There's a chance of him (Munster) feeling flat because there are certainly going to be fewer people in the crowd. 'But the one thing all of our really good players here have prided themselves on is playing State of Origin and then coming back and backing up for our club. 'Cameron Smith, Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and Greg Inglis all prided themselves on that, and these guys have caught that bug off them. 'They mightn't be 100 per cent tomorrow night because of playing on Wednesday, but we know they're going to give their best, and their best is good enough.'
