‘You might never get the opportunity again' – Hibs boss urges stars to relish sell-out Easter Road against Midtjylland

Scottish Sun21 hours ago
DAVID GRAY has urged Hibs to finish the job in front of a record Easter Road crowd tonight.
Club chiefs confirmed more than 18,500 home fans will take in their Europa League crunch after last week's gutsy 1-1 draw with Danes Midtjylland in Herning.

Now Gray is desperately hoping his side can find the win they need to book a tie against Norwegians Fredrikstad.
Hibs haven't lost at home since November, but asked if his message will be to not let down a bumper crowd, Gray said: 'Not so much. It's more not letting yourself down.
'You need to take a personal pride into it. These are the games, it's why you do it.
'You might never get the opportunity to do these things again.
'We're under no illusion that the task is going to be huge but go and enjoy it as well, you need to embrace it.
'It's been touched on, some of the big teams we've managed to beat at Easter Road.
'And this would certainly be right at the top of that list if we progress here.
'Since I've been at the club, this is as strong a connection with the fans as I've seen. They'll be right behind us. It's about constantly trying to improve. Can we keep getting better? I believe we will.'
Midtjylland battered Sonderjyske 6-2 in the league on Monday.
And as much belief as he has in his own team, Gray is also still wary of the Danes.
He said: 'They score a lot of goals, they force you to defend a lot, they've got a lot of quality players, technical players, but also physical players.
Legendary Mixu Paatelainen lifts lid on Jim McLean's brutal blast, infamous Walter Smith bust-up and his Hibs job regrets
'It's a tough challenge but I tell the players all the time, when you play Rangers and Celtic with their Champions League players, it's no greater test for you as a player than to try to test yourself against the best.
'I'm no different testing myself against a top-level coach to try to learn from the first leg.'
Gray, who could have Aussie defender Lewis Miller back for Sunday's Premiership opener at Dundee, senses they have the backing of the whole of Scottish football.
He said: 'Regardless of which Scottish clubs play in Europe, you want them to do well.
'The more of us getting further the better. It can only be good for the country and the league.'
Gray, meanwhile, has accepted defeat in his bid to get Nectar Triantis back from Sunderland.
But he added: 'I'll keep an eye out to see how he gets on and wish him all the best if it's not here.

Plucky Greek journo's Rangers question to Russell Martin shows Panathinaikos devastation - and Ibrox fans must get real

Seriously, the criticism of him and his team's performance has been ridiculously over the top writes our man who was in Athens Only one plucky Greek journalist managed to muster a question at Russell Martin's post-match press conference in Athens. ‌ The rest were probably hurting too much. ‌ The guy was gutted, having just watched Panathinaikos get dumped out of Europe by Rangers in their own backyard. ‌ When he addressed Martin on the podium, the pain was etched on his face. He asked the Rangers manager if he felt his side had all the luck in their Champions League qualifying tie. And if he didn't, could he pinpoint a single aspect of the game where the Scottish team were better than Rui Vitoria's beaten side. At one point, you wondered if there might be tears. OK, I'm over-egging it. But the point I'm trying to illustrate is just how devastated the Greeks were by the 3-1 aggregate result. ‌ Yet in the aftermath of Rangers' victory, judging by some of the reaction, Martin and his players should somehow feel guilty about their Champions League progression. Seriously, the criticism of him and his team's performance has been ridiculously over the top. Even Record Sport's own Keith Jackson, was scathing in his assessment. ‌ On the way home from Greece, Rangers fans at the airport seemed deflated, rather than elated. Football's changed eh? Remember the days when it was all about winning? Now, if your team's display is not aesthetically pleasing, for some the result is almost irrelevant. It's madness. ‌ Martin has worked with this group of players for a matter of weeks. A hotchpotch squad of some guys riddled by failure for years, others who want out, some who aren't good enough - and a few prized assets the manager will hope to build upon. He's then added a raft of new signings to the mix, a couple of whom aren't even fully fit yet. ‌ On top of that, he's been 100 percent clear that he's bringing a completely new way of playing that will take time to implement. Remember, for Rangers this isn't just a tweak or tinker job in terms of style. It's a seismic, cultural change not seen at Ibrox in years. ‌ So, after 57 days in the job, what exactly were supporters and pundits expecting from Martin and this team? Free-flowing phases of play and attacking football from the off? Get real. When the draw for the Champions League qualifiers was made, Panathinaikos was the nightmare pairing for Rangers - the toughest possible opponent at this stage. ‌ Most outsiders felt it would be a tall order to go through. Instead, they've scored three outstanding goals over two legs to win 3-1 and secure a guaranteed Europa League group spot again. But Martin's getting flak? ‌ Would supporters or critics rather be in the shoes of that Greek journalist or the Panathinaikos fans after Wednesday night? Absolutely delighted with how they played, creating loads of chances - but out of Europe altogether before August? ‌ Didn't think so. So why the negativity? Martin's squad is still a million miles away from being Champions League ready. He'll want at least another four players in before the transfer window closes, with a few going out as well. ‌ But right now, he's had to navigate a hugely difficult European tie with the cards he's been dealt. And he hasn't done too bad a job. Of course, there were scares at Ibrox and in the Olympic Stadium. Aye, Jack Butland had to pull off a few good saves in the tie. But that's what he's there for. ‌ Rangers were under the cosh for 45 minutes in Greece and had to dig in. But with Panathinaikos two goals behind, at their own ground, with 40,000 fanatics demanding they go for Rangers' throats - did anyone seriously expect anything else? Martin's team could obviously have been better on the ball but it's still early days. ‌ There WERE glimpses of what he wants from this team and how he expects it to look. But he's still well short of quality in the final third of the pitch. I've read accusations of Rangers being 'wide open'. So what does that make Panathinaikos, who shipped three goals in the tie? ‌ The key thing about Wednesday night - which is a really important sign of what the players think of their new gaffer - is the shift they put in for him in testing conditions. They didn't wilt. Instead, they grafted their a***s off for Martin and his staff. That tells me they've bought into him, which is vital. When Ange Postecoglou arrived at Celtic in the summer of 2022, he also vowed to transform the Hoops' playing style. ‌ Early on, just like Martin, he was thrown into a tricky European qualifier against FC Midtjylland - and came a cropper. Celtic were beaten by the competent Danes but excuses were made for their new Aussie gaffer. ‌ That's despite the fact he deployed a multi-million pound forward line in the two games, consisting of Liel Abada, Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie. All of whom are considerably better than Martin's attacking trio - Kieran Dowell, Danilo and Findlay Curtis - against the Greeks. Postecoglou also lost his opening league game at Tynecastle against Hearts when, while trying to get his team playing out from the back, the likes of new Swedish defender Carl Starfelt was all over the place. ‌ Again, it was seen as a work in progress. There were signs it was coming together but defeats to Rangers at Ibrox and Livingston in West Lothian suggested his style wouldn't work away from home. Their Old Firm rivals were apparently certs for the title. ‌ We all know what happened next. Before too long, Postecoglou's side were sweeping aside all before them and hoovering up trophies. Martin has a long way to go - with a mountain of work ahead of him - to get to that stage. But he knows that. And he knows it'll take time, as well as more quality players. ‌ If he gets found out at Fir Park on Saturday and loses his Premiership opener to Motherwell? Or if there are early slip-ups in the league that leave them trailing Celtic? There will be a queue of people lining up to have a pop - and I'll be in it. ‌ Because unlike in Europe, domestically Martin HAS to get results even amidst a period of transition. If it goes haywire on that score, of course he'll deserve flak. But after an emphatic Champions League victory over Panathinaikos this early in his Ibrox reign? That's grossly unfair.

Hibs transfer news: Will Scotland star Hanley be won over by Euro drama?

And to win over any potential signing who just happened to be in attendance. Yes Grant Hanley, we're looking straight at you. David Gray certainly believes that last night's scenes at Easter Road, despite his Hibs side eventually slipping out of the Europa League courtesy of two world-class goals from mighty Midtjylland, couldn't have harmed his club's reputation as a prized destination. Scotland defender Hanley, sitting the main stand alongside former international team-mate David Marshall for a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat after extra time, would surely have been an interested audience of one. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Although Gray danced around his club's confirmed and obvious interest in the 33-year-old former Blackburn, Newcastle United and Norwich centre-half, the Hibs boss did respond in the affirmative when asked if the whole occasion would have impressed any potential signing who might have been there, saying: 'I would think so. It was a fantastic night in terms of the atmosphere. The fans were outstanding. 'The amount of tickets that were sold, the backing right throughout it. Because being there as a player, there's no better feeling than when you start to feel tired and the crowd get right behind you. They certainly did that.' Ex-Norwich defender Hanley has 62 caps for Scotland Asked outright if he was aiming to bring in Hanley, Gray said: 'No, I think we're just always looking into the squad to see what can be done. I think right now, whilst the window's open, you're always going to be getting speculation and rumours. 'But for me, I'd rather talk about the players that are in the building tonight, purely because of what they've given me. I think that would be the right thing to do. And then we'll look at that down the line.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs have made Hanley aware of their interest, obviously. Marshall's role as sporting director Malky Mackay's right-hand man suggests that there's been at least some discussion over the terms of any deal for a player whose loan spell with Birmingham last season saw the Blues win promotion to the EFL Championship. Seven-figure offers rejected for Socceroos star With reports down south suggesting Lewis Miller is bound for Blackburn, that leaves Hibs with a gap to fill. Wedded to playing three at the back, Gray needs a group of five central defenders on his books to cover for injuries and suspensions. Asked if Hanley's presence in the stadium suggested that contract talks had begun, Gray said: 'No, listen, I think, as I say, there's a number of players that we're looking at. 'There's a number of players that have come up. There's areas in which we might need to improve. There's areas in which we're always linked, players linked away from here as well. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'So whilst the window's open, there's always a need to be active, there's always speculation. So we always need to be moving towards making sure we finish the window stronger than when we started it. And that's what we're working towards.' Miller, currently out with a minor injury, had an extension clause in his contract triggered towards the end of last season. Hibs have already rejected a couple of £1 million-plus offers for the Socceroos star, who can play in central defence, right back or at right wing back – but reports in the Blackburn media last night claimed a fee had been agreed between the clubs.
