Job cuts for agility, not because of AI: CEO In a statement on the job cuts, TCS said it is on a journey to become a 'future-ready organisation', which calls for realigning the workforce model, among other things."Towards this, a number of reskilling and redeployment initiatives have been underway. As part of this journey, we will also be releasing associates from the organisation whose deployment may not be feasible," the company said.
Talking to Moneycontrol, TCS chief executive K Krithivasan emphasised that the retrenchment is not a case of AI taking jobs, but rather a skill mismatch issue. The company has been training employees in AI skills, but senior-level staff may not be able to use entry-level skills, causing issues with their deployment, the TCS CEO stated.
What TCS is offering affected employees
The laid-off employees will receive payments for their notice periods, along with a severance package, TCS said. The company said it is also looking to extend insurance benefits and other outplacement opportunities for the impacted employees. In its statement, the company said it will 'provide appropriate benefits, outplacement, counselling, and support' to employees 'as they transition to new opportunities.'CEO Krithivasan told Moneycontrol that the company will not rush the process. It will first talk to the employees identified for layoffs, and try to deploy them. If unable to do so, the fired staff will be given benefits as per the HR policy, he said.

Markets extended losses today as multiple headwinds weighed on investor sentiment. The Sensex dropped 572 points, closing at 80,891, and the Nifty fell 156 points, ending at 24,680. That's nearly ₹4.9 lakh crore in market cap wiped out in a single session. Here are 5 key reasons behind today's slide: 1. India–US Trade Talks Stalled Trade negotiations between India and the US have hit an impasse, mainly over tariffs on dairy and agricultural goods. While the US struck a framework agreement with the European Union over the weekend, India's deal still hangs in limbo. That's hurting investor confidence and raising concerns about India's global trade momentum. 2. Weak Q1 Earnings, Led by Kotak Bank Kotak Mahindra Bank plunged 7.3% today after posting a drop in quarterly profit. Gross NPAs rose to 1.48%, margins narrowed to 4.65%, and overall asset quality weakened. This adds to earlier disappointments from Axis Bank and points to rising pressure in the banking sector. 3. IT Ministry Keeping Close Watch On Tata Consultancy Services' Layoffs Situation: Report
New Delhi: The IT Ministry is keeping a close watch on the developments after Tata Consultancy Services' (TCS) decision to lay off over 12,000 employees, according to sources. Employment growth remains a key priority, with sharp focus on how initiatives like Employment Linked Incentive can help boost job creation, they asserted. At the same time, the emphasis is on skilling and reskilling, they added. The IT Ministry is keeping a close watch on the entire situation, and is in touch with the tech company, sources said. The ministry is concerned and will go into why it is happening to understand the underlying causes. The stance assumes significance as India's largest IT services firm, TCS, is set to lay off 12,261 employees or two per cent of its global workforce this year. The bulk of the impact will be felt on middle and senior grades. TCS's workforce stood at 6,13,069, as of June 30, 2025. It increased its workforce by 5,000 employees in the recently concluded April-June quarter. The move is part of the company's broader strategy to become a "future-ready organisation", focusing on investments in technology, AI deployment, market expansion, and workforce realignment, TCS said in a statement on Sunday. "TCS is on a journey to become a future-ready organisation. This includes strategic initiatives on multiple fronts, including investing in new-tech areas, entering new markets, deploying AI at scale for our clients and ourselves, deepening our partnerships, creating next-gen infrastructure, and realigning our workforce model. "Towards this, a number of reskilling and redeployment initiatives have been underway. As part of this journey, we will also be releasing associates from the organisation whose deployment may not be feasible. This will impact about 2 per cent of our global workforce, primarily in the middle and the senior grades, over the course of the year," it said.
