The newer entrants have grown their collective share to around 4% in March 2025, up from 2.3% in October 2024 and negligible a year earlier, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which runs the UPI network. Even so, PhonePe and Google Pay continue their domination, holding on to a combined market share of 82%—47% and 35%, respectively—in the last two months, the data showed.
'The newer apps are not offering pure-play payments; they are going beyond that with credit, ecommerce, and bill payments,' said Rohan Lakhaiyar, partner at Grant Thornton Bharat. 'UPI is their customer acquisition hook, and it seems to be working,' he said.
Navi is focused on consumer lending, Cred is expanding unsecured loans and bill payments through Bharat Connect, and Super.Money is binding itself into Flipkart's ecommerce ecosystem.
These firms are offering cashbacks and other incentives to move consumers away from their preferred apps at a time when the growth rate of UPI has slowed down. The payment network grew about 36% in 2023 and 2024, down from around 54% growth in 2022, albeit on a larger base, ET reported on April 7.
Currently UPI is estimated to have more than 200 million active users.
While Super.Money is offering up to 5% cashback on every UPI transaction, Navi is positioning UPI payments as a 'rewarding' experience, bundling features such as buy-now-pay-later through Navi Trezo. Cred had until recently promoted cashbacks for every Cred UPI transaction.

India stands out as global fintech bright spot as credit demand surges

New Delhi: India has emerged as one of the most dynamic fintech markets globally, driven by a potent combination of digital public infrastructure (UPI, Aadhaar, Account Aggregator), a mobile-first population, and regulatory clarity, a report showed on Monday. Fintech-led digital lending grew at 35 per cent CAGR in 2024, driven by rising credit demand, according to the report by QED Investors and Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Tools like UPI have enabled a wave of fintech innovation from digital lending to payments to wealth particularly benefitting underserved and unbanked populations. These enablers have accelerated innovation and financial inclusion at scale, making India a key focus for both global investors and domestic fintech players, said the report. India features among the top geographies poised for future fintech investment. Investors are encouraged to diversify capital into high-growth regions like India, with an emphasis on AI integration and disciplined scale, it added. India's affluent middle class, currently 31 per cent of the population, is projected to grow to 40 per cent (nearly 600 million) by 2031. This demographic shift is fuelling a surge in consumer demand for credit across retail, consumption, and SME sectors. "India stands at a unique inflection point in the global fintech landscape. With a strong foundation in digital infrastructure like UPI, Aadhar, Account Aggregator, and tech-savvy mobile-first population, the country has already shown how innovation can drive financial inclusion at scale,' said Sandeep Patil, Partner and Head of Asia at QED Investors. To win the next chapter, fintechs must pair innovation with disciplined execution. 'That means building trust, demonstrating profitability, and navigating an evolving regulatory landscape with maturity. The Indian market is large, dynamic and underpenetrated — well-positioned to be one of the defining arenas for global fintech over the next decade,' Patil mentioned. Globally, in 2024, fintech revenues grew by 21 per cent — up from 13 per cent in 2023 — marking a threefold acceleration over the financial services industry at large. 'A class of scaled fintechs is coming of age. Investors are demanding greater maturity, and regulators want more accountability,' said Deepak Goyal, a managing director and senior partner at BCG. 'Meanwhile, emerging disruptors are harnessing next-generation technologies like agentic AI and pioneering new business models, pushing established players to continuously innovate,' he added.

India's manufacturing PMI eased to three-month low in May

New Delhi: India's manufacturing sector activity dropped to a three-month low in May as growth in new orders and output softened, a private survey showed on Monday. The HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, fell to 57.6 in May from 58.2 in April and 58.1 in March. India's manufacturing PMI was 56.3 in February and 57.7 in January. A reading above 50 indicates expansion. "Although rates of increase in new orders and output retreated to three-month lows, they remained well above their respective long-run averages," the survey said. "Panelists suggested that demand strength continued to support sales and production, though competition, inflation and the India-Pakistan conflict had reportedly weighed on growth," it added. In May, India and Pakistan were locked in a sharp four-day border conflict, marked by heavy shelling and multiple casualties, after tourists were killed in Kashmir in an attack allegedly carried out by Pakistan-backed terrorists. Though the fighting subsided tensions remain high, with diplomatic ties still strained and security on alert. Meanwhile, the survey showed that goods producers increased input purchases and hiring in May, with employment rising at a record pace. However, input cost inflation hit a six-month high, prompting one of the sharpest rises in selling prices in nearly 11-and-a-half years. "India's May manufacturing PMI signalled another month of robust growth in the sector, although the rate of expansion in output and new orders eased from the previous month," said Pranjul Bhandari, chief India economist at HSBC. "The acceleration in employment growth to a new peak is certainly a positive development. Input cost inflation is picking up, but manufacturers seem to be able to lessen the pressure on profit margins by raising output prices," she added. India's economic growth rebounded in the March quarter following a slowdown in September. Gross domestic product (GDP) for fiscal year 2025 grew by 6.5%, supported by a robust 7.4% expansion in the January-March quarter, show provisional data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. Both figures were lower than growth in the corresponding year-earlier periods—India's economy grew at 7.8% in the fourth quarter of FY24 while the full-year GDP growth was revised to 9.2%. Despite global uncertainties, growth was driven by strong output in agriculture, manufacturing, construction, mining, and services sectors in FY25 compared to FY24. India's economic outlook for FY26 is marked by cautious optimism, with GDP growth projected between 6.3% and 6.8%, according to the Ministry of Finance. Interestingly, manufacturing output grew at 4.5% to ₹ 29.54 trillion in FY25, although it comes on a higher base, with FY24 manufacturing output growing at 12.3%. Meanwhile, new export orders in May surged at their strongest pace in three years, driven by robust demand from Asia, Europe, West Asia, and the US, the survey said. This boost in sales prompted companies to increase input purchases and expand staffing, with job creation hitting a new record high. "Sustained job creation enabled manufacturers to stay on top of their workloads in May. Outstanding business volumes was unchanged, ending a six-month period of accumulation," the survey said. Companies in India's manufacturing sector faced a further monthly rise in purchasing prices, driven mainly by higher costs for aluminium, cement, iron, leather, rubber, and sand, it added.

‘Thalliki Vandanam' Scheme: How To Get Rs 15,000 Aid – Step-by-Step Guide For Mothers

Last Updated: Thalliki Vandanam Scheme: Andhra government will deposit Rs 15,000 directly into the accounts of students' mothers. Certain key conditions must be fulfilled to receive this benefit The Andhra Pradesh government has announced a key update on the 'Thalliki Vandanam' scheme. As part of the newly formed coalition government's 'Super Six' promises made during the elections, the scheme is set to be implemented this June. With schools reopening on June 12 after the summer break, the government is taking steps to ensure financial assistance reaches the mothers of school-going children on time. Under the 'Thalliki Vandanam' scheme, the state government will deposit Rs 15,000 directly into the bank accounts of students' mothers. The amount is intended as a token of respect for the efforts and dedication of mothers towards their children's education. However, to receive this benefit, certain important conditions must be fulfilled. To be eligible for the payment, the mother's bank account must be linked to both: Her Aadhaar number, and The NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) system. Officials have clearly stated that if either of these linkages is missing, the payment will not be processed. According to recent government orders, the Aadhaar and NPCI linking process must be completed by June 5. To facilitate this, postal department staff, village/ward secretariats, and bank officials will assist beneficiaries in completing the necessary procedures. Authorities have urged all eligible mothers to check whether their bank accounts are linked with Aadhaar and NPCI. If not, the linking must be completed urgently through the nearest Mee Seva centre, post office, or bank branch. NPCI linking is essential for enabling direct benefit transfers (DBT) under government schemes. Without it, even if the money is released, it won't be credited to the beneficiary's account. To avoid inconvenience, the government has directed all departments to provide special support. Linking centres are also being set up in rural areas to make the process easier for beneficiaries. The government emphasises that this is not just a financial aid programme, but a gesture to recognise and honour the pivotal role played by mothers. It also marks the beginning of fulfilling the 'Super Six' promises, aimed at increasing public trust and welfare. First Published: June 02, 2025, 10:55 IST
