'Thug Life' Karnataka ban row: Supreme Court seeks KA govt's reply over screening of Kamal Haasan starrer
The
Supreme Court
on Friday issued a notice to the Karnataka government in response to a plea challenging the alleged unofficial ban on the screening of
Kamal Haasan
's 'Thug Life' in the state. The petition, filed by M
Mahesh Reddy
, claimed that threats and police interference have prevented the Tamil film's theatrical release in Karnataka, despite it being certified by the
Central Board of Film Certification
(CBFC).
The bench, comprising Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan, scheduled the next hearing for Tuesday (June 17).
Petitioner alleges verbal instructions
Filed through the advocate A Velan, the petition argued that the ban was not implemented through any formal government order or legal process, but through oral instructions and indirect pressure. According to News 18, it alleged that the officials failed to work against the groups threatening violence, which led to a cold impact on expression and freedom of cinema exhibition.
The petition stated that such intervention violates constitutional rights, including the right to free speech and practicing a profession under Article 19 (1) (A) and 19 (1) (G).
State accused of yielding to threats and violence
The petition also accused the state government of becoming a silent spectator amid threats of arson and communal violence targeting linguistic minorities. "This surrender to violent, non-state actors is not only a lapse in governance but a breakdown of constitutional machinery,' the plea stated.

It called for urgent intervention to ensure law and order and protect citizens' rights.
Call for legal action and safe screenings
M Mahesh Reddy urged the court to declare the de facto ban on 'Thug Life' illegal and to direct authorities to ensure safe, uninterrupted screenings in willing theatres. It also demanded legal action against those inciting threats or communal hatred. Notably, the film was released in other states on June 5 in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi, but faced resistance in Karnataka following controversial remarks made by Kamal Haasan regarding the Kannada language.

Actor Rishab Shetty escapes unhurt as boat capsizes during Kantara-1 shoot
A boat carrying actor Rishab Shetty and around 30 crew members capsized during the shoot of 'Kantara: Chapter 1' at the Mani reservoir in Karnataka's Shivamogga district, reported news agency PTI. The incident occurred in the shallow waters of Melina Koppa in the Masti Katte region, narrowly averting what could have been a major tragedy. All members onboard, including actor-director Shetty, escaped unhurt, the police said. However, filming equipment, including cameras, is believed to have been damaged or lost. The exact value of the loss is still being assessed, according to Thirthahalli police, who confirmed an investigation is underway. This incident comes just days after the death of actor-mimicry artist Kalabhavan Niju, 43, who suffered a heart attack in Bengaluru while shooting for the same film. According to a report by OnManorama, Niju complained of chest pain at the homestay arranged for artists and was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead. The Kerala-based actor had reportedly joined the film after an audition and was last seen in the Malayalam film 'Marco'. His death marks the third fatality linked to 'Kantara: Chapter 1' in the past month. In May, Kannada comedian Rakesh Poojary, 33, died of a cardiac arrest while attending a wedding. Around the same time, a 32-year-old junior artiste from Kerala, MF Kapil, drowned in the Souparnika river after being caught in a cross current. The Hombale Films production has endured a series of misfortunes since filming began. Last November, a minibus carrying 20 junior artistes met with an accident in Mudoor; though all escaped unhurt, it raised alarms over on-set safety. Earlier, a costly set constructed for the film was destroyed by heavy rains, further delaying the shoot. Kantara: Chapter 1 is a prequel to Shetty's critically acclaimed 2022 film Kantara. The new instalment is scheduled for release on 2 October 2025, with Rishab Shetty once again taking the lead role.

Reacher fans familiar with Gone Tomorrow may notice that the OTT series has tweaked some of the character names from the novel, with Merrick replacing Mark, Tamara swapping in for Theresa, Elspeth trading out the 'p' for a 'b' to become Elsbeth, and Svetlana becoming Amisha. The only major characters from Gone Tomorrow who remain to be cast for Season 4 are Susan Mark (likely Susan Merrick in the series) and Mr Springfield. The streaming platform handed Reacher an early Season 4 renewal back in October 2024, four months before the third season premiered on the platform. It went on to become the biggest returning series in the streaming platform's history. The first three seasons of 'Reacher' are now streaming on OTT. A release window for Season 4 has not yet been announced.
