JENSEN BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida judge will appear on the other side of the courtroom after a traffic stop led to his arrest earlier this week.
Brett Waronicki, a circuit judge for Florida's 19th Judicial Circuit in Fort Pierce, was arrested Wednesday on charges of DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Deputies with the Martin County Sheriff's Office spotted a Ford F-150 swerving in a lane, striking the fog line and a bike lane several times and going through a roundabout without any lights on around 10:41 p.m. on NW Jensen Beach Blvd.
When Waronicki was pulled over, authorities noted a strong alcoholic smell on his breath, bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred 'thick tongue' speech, body tremors and trouble sitting still, the affidavit said.
The judge told deputies he was going to pick up two friends and head back to his home, before admitting he had had two vodka drinks, having his last drink at 6:30 that night.
Court documents show Waronicki did not want to do field sobriety exercises because he 'did nothing wrong,' and refused an alcohol breath test.

A K-9 searched Waronicki's vehicle, discovering cocaine residue in Waronicki's wallet. The circuit judge was taken to the Martin County Jail, along with the two passengers in his vehicle, who were also cited for possession of cocaine.
A statement from the 19th Judicial Circuit, obtained by NBC affiliate WPTV, read in part:
All cases currently assigned to Circuit Judge Brett M. Waronicki will be re-noticed for hearing before a temporary duty judge, when available, consistent with the chief judge's authority under court rules. The chief judge will take steps to ensure the speedy, efficient, and proper administration of pending and filed cases within the circuit. Litigants with questions regarding any schedule changes to upcoming hearings may visit the St. Lucie Clerk of Court website to locate up-to-date information.
According to WPTV, two people came forward about Waronicki's drug use. For several weeks, narcotics investigators with the sheriff's office have been looking into the judge.
Waronicki is scheduled to appear in court on May 22.

Animal control officer is mauled by dog during welfare check in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WFLA) — A Broward County Animal Control officer was hospitalized last week after she was attacked by a dog and suffered serious injuries. The attack happened in the 700 block of Southwest 14th Terrace around 7 p.m. Thursday. According to NBC affiliate WTVJ, the animal control worker, Martina Bernard, was doing a welfare check on an American Staffordshire terrier mix when the dog began to maul her. Police said that a neighbor called 911 after hearing a woman cry for help and seeing the dog with its teeth around her neck. Body camera video shows officers arriving at the scene to find Bernard laying on the ground in the backyard with her face covered in blood. The dog's owner is also seen in the video holding down the dog, which had been stabbed in an attempt to remove it from Bernard. The officer can be heard asking the woman where she was bit, to which she responds, 'All over my head, my face, my breast, my neck.' Bernard was rushed to Broward health Medical Center for treatment. Officers removed the dog who was transported to Broward County Animal Care where it was later euthanized. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Victim in fatal crash on I-90 was a musician set to perform at the Levitt this weekend

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety has released the name of a Flandreau man who died June 2 in a two-vehicle crash a couple miles west of Sioux Falls. Casey Joe Wilson, 50, died at the scene of the accident at mile marker 394 on Interstate 90. Wilson was one-half of Sioux Falls country duo The Barn Flies, which was scheduled to perform June 6 at The Levitt. The band was also scheduled to perform Aug. 15 at the Blue Rock Bar & Grill. Wilson was a leading Sioux Falls figure in efforts to reform state custody laws, organizing social media campaigns and leading the 'Kids Need Both Parents PAC.' Visitation services for him will be 4-7 p.m. June 6 at Flandreau High School, and a night of honoring Wilson will occur afterward at The Merc in Flandreau, which is owned by Wilson and his wife, Carleen Wild. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. June 7 at Flandreau High School. According to the Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred at 9:06 a.m., when Wilson's 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan was heading west and collided with the rear of a 2015 Ford F-350 road construction vehicle that was stopped in the right lane with active warning signals. He was directing traffic into the left lane. The impact sent the construction truck into the median, where it caught fire. Wilson's vehicle came to a stop on the westbound shoulder. Authorities confirmed Wilson was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. The driver of the Ford truck sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
