She said, 'Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the child's family and loved ones during this unimaginable time.' Wasu stated that the police investigation on the matter was currently ongoing. She added, 'This is still an open investigation. Out of respect for the family's privacy, we will not be releasing additional details until the investigation is closed.' 18-Year-Old Killed in Crash Right After His Graduation Dinner: 'Everything Is Painful,' Mom Says

Hendry Aceituno Gudiño, 18, of Riviera Beach, was with his girlfriend and her father when the fatal crash occurred in Martin County on Saturday, May 17, according to NBC affiliate WPTV and FOX affiliate WFLX. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) said the car slammed into a guardrail near the Martin Highway exit after the 52-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle, CBS affiliate WPEC reported. Both the driver and Hendry were pronounced dead at the scene, per WPTV. The 16-year-old girl who was also inside the vehicle was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Hendry had reportedly graduated from Boca Raton Community High School just hours before the crash occurred. He was returning home from a celebratory dinner when the crash took place. The teen and his mom, Anielka Gudiño, moved to Florida from Venezuela in 2023, according to WPTV. Anielka told the station that her son 'had a whole life ahead of him.' 'It's a tragic death, and I think nobody deserves to die like that,' Anielka said. 'Very painful. Everything is painful. A teen full of life, 18 years old.' She later added, 'I'm going to miss him so much. It was him and I. This is all going to be so difficult for me.' As of Tuesday, May 20, more than $5,400 has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign started to support Hendry's family following the crash. In an email to families on Monday, May 19, high school principal Dr. Suzanne King expressed 'heartfelt condolences' to Hendry's family and said the school would 'offer support' to them, according to WPEC. But that's just been raised to $100,000 for claims on homebuilding contracts signed after Jan. 1, 2025. There's no foolproof way to prevent contractor fraud — but you can take several steps to lower your risk: Research the contractor's background. Look up licensing status and check for complaints or lawsuits on your state's contractor licensing board and county court websites. Get everything in writing. A clear, detailed contract can help protect you if something goes wrong. Request lien waivers. This helps ensure subcontractors are paid and reduces the chance they'll file liens against your property. Watch for red flags. Frequent delays, evasive answers about payments, and requests for large upfront deposits can all be signs of trouble. If you find yourself in a similar situation, taking action is crucial to protecting yourself. While laws and regulations vary by jurisdiction, here are a few steps to consider: File a complaint with the state licensing board and your local consumer protection office. Dispute wrongful liens in court if you believe they're invalid or were filed in error. Hire an attorney to explore your legal options, including suing the builder or filing a claim in bankruptcy court. Apply to your state's Contractor Recovery Fund (also known as a Homeowner's Recovery Fund) if the contractor was licensed and your case qualifies.
