In what might be his final film, David Cronenberg keeps it perverse

Going by recent reports, The Shrouds may be the last film from 82-year-old David Cronenberg, Canada's onetime king of 'body horror'. If so, it's an apt farewell – typically morbid, perverse and self-mocking, but also emotionally direct in the manner of some of his most durable classics, such as The Dead Zone and The Fly.
Vincent Cassel, who stars as an eccentric tech entrepreneur named Karsh, is a generation younger than Cronenberg but here bears an unmistakable resemblance to his director, with slicked-back white hair, a long bony face that lends itself to dramatic lighting, and the detached verve of a scientist who enjoys the process of dissection.
He also recalls some of Cronenberg's earlier eccentric leading men, such as Christopher Walken as a troubled psychic in The Dead Zone, especially when he's flashing a disconcerting grin. Like Walken, Cassel has a knack for throwing us off-balance through his speech rhythms, though in Cassel's case this is partly the consequence of being a native French speaker acting in English.

Karsh, like Cronenberg, has 'made a career out of bodies,' in a very literal way. His ventures include a cemetery where the tombstones come equipped with screens, allowing you to log in and watch the corpse of your loved one rotting in real time. Naturally, there's an app for this, known as GraveTech (there's also a restaurant adjacent to the cemetery, encouraging visitors to make a day of it).
How many takers there would be for the scheme in real life is hard to say. But this is Cronenberg world, although we're nominally in something resembling present-day Toronto. In any case Karsh is his own most enthusiastic client, maintaining an ongoing relationship with the body of his wife Becca (Diane Kruger) years after her early death from cancer.

Jeff Bezos ‘obsessed' with making wife Lauren Sanchez next Bond girl

Jeff Bezos is 'obsessed' with casting his wife Lauren Sanchez in the latest Bond film, Hollywood insiders have claimed. The Amazon founder is reportedly pushing the makers of Bond 26 to consider Sanchez, a journalist, trained pilot, and one-time astronaut, for a role as the latest Bond girl. Since Ursula Andress first hit screens as the original Bond girl in 1962, playing Honey Ryder in Dr No, the role of the fictional spy's love interest has become a coveted one. The role, which has become almost as iconic as that of Bond himself, has been played by the likes of Eva Green, Honor Blackman, Halle Berry and Jane Seymour. 'This isn't just fantasy casting – Jeff wants her on screen, period,' a Hollywood source told Rob Shuter, a British gossip blogger and former executive editor of OK! magazine's US edition. The insider added that the billionaire is 'obsessed' with finding a role for his wife, 55, in the new film, which is slated for release next year or early 2027. Despite fervent speculation, it's still not clear who will replace Daniel Craig as 007 in the film. The actor bowed out of the franchise after starring in No Time To Die in 2021. The film's director was announced as Denis Villeneuve, the French-Canadian filmmaker behind the Dune franchise, in July.

Anna Wintour closing in on Vogue successor

Don't miss out on the headlines from Celeb Style. Followed categories will be added to My News. Chloe Malle is the frontrunner to take over at Vogue from the fashion bible's legendary editor Anna Wintour. Malle — the daughter of actress Candice Bergen and French film director Louis Malle — is currently editor of and is in the 'final rounds' of interviews to be the new head of editorial content for US Vogue. Anna Wintour is stepping down after 37 years as Vogue's editor. Picture: AFP The 39-year-old is a favourite of staff at Vogue and recently interviewed Lauren Sanchez for her Vogue cover ahead of her lavish Venetian wedding to Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos. The New York Post reported that Condé Nast bosses, including CEO Roger Lynch and Anna Wintour, who is stepping down as Vogue's editor-in-chief, have whittled the shortlist down to the final few candidates. Vogue declined to comment. Nicole Phelps, global director of Vogue Runway – the online platform of Vogue dedicated to fashion shows – is also in the running. Chloe Malle, pictured with her famous mum Candice Bergen, is a hot favourite to succeed Anna Wintour at Vogue. Picture: Supplied The new editor should be announced by the beginning of New York Fashion week, which starts September 11 and runs through September 16. There are believed to be four to five favourites left, including some external candidates. However, Instagram's Eva Chen, a friend of Wintour's, is no longer believed to be in the running as her role is so big at Meta. Chen, who is Head of Fashion Partnerships at Instagram, previously worked on Condé Nast's Teen Vogue and Lucky. 'Eva is making a ton of money at Instagram,' said an industry insider. 'There is no reason for her to move over.' W Magazine owner Sara Moonves has also been linked to the role, but another source pointed out that she's too entwined with her publication to make the move. Similarly, Chioma Nnadi, who replaced Edward Enninful as Head of Editorial Content at British Vogue in October 2023, is happy in London and doing a great job. Wintour, 75, broke the news that she was stepping down as editor-in-chief of American Vogue in June after helming the fashion bible for 37 years. Picture: Getty Images 'When I became the editor of Vogue, I was eager to prove to all who might listen that there was a new, exciting way to imagine an American fashion magazine,' she told staff. 'Now, I find that my greatest pleasure is helping the next generation of impassioned editors storm the field with their own ideas, supported by a new, exciting view of what a major media company can be.' As previously reported, the new boss won't get Wintour's editor-in-chief title, and will be a head of editorial content instead. They will also report to Wintour, who is staying on as Vogue's global editorial director and chief content officer for Condé Nast. '[I'll be] paying very close attention to the fashion industry and to the creative cultural force that is our extraordinary Met Ball, and charting the course of future Vogue Worlds, and any other original fearless ideas we may come up with,' Wintour has said.
