Rassie Erasmus announces Springboks squad featuring new talent for Barbarians clash
Lions prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye will anchor the Springboks' scrum against the Barbarians on Saturday.

Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus has named four uncapped players to face the Barbarians in their season opener in Cape Town on Saturday.
Prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye and flank Vincent Tshituka have both been named in a relatively experienced starting lineup, while Marnus van der Merwe (hooker) and Neethling Fouche (prop) will feature off the bench.
'They have all slotted into our systems really well and have a good understanding of what we want to do in this match, while it also presents us with a fantastic opportunity to see how they measure up against a handful of experienced players in the Barbarians team,' Erasmus said.
'This may not be an official Test match, but we are approaching it as such, and a good result will hopefully set us on course for an exciting season.
'Asenathi, Vincent, Neethling, and Marnus have all been impressive at training and for their respective franchises this season, and we hope to see them replicate those quality performances in this match.'

Another notable inclusion in the starting team was Lood de Jager, who will partner up with Jean Kleyn in the engine room. The experienced lock is back for his first Test since the Springboks' 2023 Rugby Championship clash against the All Blacks in New Zealand, which was his only Test in the last two seasons following a string of injuries.
'Lood is in great form and hopped straight back into the thick of things with the intensity and work rate that we are used to seeing him deliver, and we are thrilled to see him and players like Faf (de Klerk) and Sacha (Feinberg-Mngomezulu) who missed a large chunk of last season back from injury.'
Players from the Bulls, as well as Ireland-based lock RG Snyman, and flyhalf Handre Pollard, only joined the squad last week following their involvement in the United Rugby Championship and English Premiership finals.
As a result, only Bulls utility forward Jan-Hendrik Wessels has been included in the match-23 from this group of players.
The squad assembled in Cape Town on Sunday afternoon after two weeks of training in Johannesburg and started their on-field match preparations on Monday. They were also joined by utility forward Pieter-Steph du Toit, who has recovered from his injury, taking the size of the squad to 46 players.
However, Erasmus' team still boasts a lot of experience with Aphelele Fassi, Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse joining forces in the back three, while double Rugby World Cup-winning centres Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel will look to make their presence felt in the midfield. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Morne van den Berg will dictate play at halfback.

Soon-to-be Springbok tighthead prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye has gone the extra mile in trying to keep up with the free-running Barbarians in Saturday's clash at Cape Town Stadium. Moreover, his gut-busting actions over the past few weeks will help him fit in with the Springboks. Ntlabakanye has toiled on the farm of Springbok scrum coach Daan Human and has trimmed down from about 160kg to 141kg before Saturday's clash. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus said the burly Lions prop's time on Human's farm has had the desired results. 'He went a few times to Daan's farm and stayed there for a week and Daan worked with him — with the blessing of the Lions coach and CEO — after the Lions fell out of the URC,' he said. 'Whenever there was a break, he drove to Bloemfontein, went to the farm and he dropped 15kg to 18kg. So let's hope he can now perform at Test-match level — that will be great.' Erasmus took to social media to post pictures of Ntlabakanye and Wessels being put through the wringer on Human's farm in Verkeerde Vlei, just more than 80km south of Bloemfontein. The coach referred to the exercise as 'Kamp Daandraad' in reference to the Springboks' jaw-droopingly infamous pre-2003 Rugby World Cup boot camp. Getting Ntlabakanye fighting fit is in the Boks' interest. Long-time occupier of the No 3 jersey Frans Malherbe is out injured for the remainder of the year and the Boks need to deepen their reserves in that position. At 26 Ntlabakanye is an investment in the Bok future when one considers Malherbe, Vincent Koch and Neethling Fouche are 34, 35, and 32 respectively. Wilco Louw, who has been laying serious claim to the No 3 jersey, is 30. Erasmus's attempt to get Ntlabakanye up to Bok speed, though radical, has been proactive. Despite bending defences on the charge and stunting opposition attacks with his firm embrace for the Lions, the 160kg version of Ntlabakanye would not have fitted the Bok mould. 'When we started looking at Asenathi two years ago, we tracked his 'battle' stats and they are up there with almost anyone,' Erasmus said. 'We then got him in with the help of Rudolf [Straeuli] and the Lions, and we said we've got to get this right.' The Lions' failure to reach the URC knockout rounds presented Ntlabakanye with the opportunity to accept Human's offer to improve his skills and fitness. The Lions' loss this season may turn out to be the Boks' gain. This Saturday Ntlabakanye appears ready to slip into a new role. When will Barbarians name team to face Springboks?
Earlier this week, the Barbarians reported for duty in South Africa to begin preparing for this Saturday's clash against the Springboks. As many as 18 players with Test experience from across the world touched down in Cape Town, with the 23-man squad – which includes former Junior Springbok lock Ruben van Heerden of the Stormers – set to take on the Springboks for the first time on South African soil. The first five players confirmed for the fixture were the Irish centurion trio of Cian Healy (prop), Peter O'Mahony (flanker) and Conor Murray (scrumhalf), while former All Black captain Sam Cane and his Kiwi teammate Shannon Frizell (both loose forwards) were also locked in. Bok berths up for grabs for Italy Tests
'It's definitely a different challenge to what we normally would have. 'The Barbarians have always knocked over a lot of great sides over the years, so for us around that challenge it's massive, so exactly what we want for our first game for the year. 'We're preparing our players like it is a Test match, and it won't be Barbarians versus Barbarians. 'It will be Springboks versus Barbarians, so everything we do will be around how we play the game, how we play Test match rugby, and how we're going to win the game.
