Borneo Flora Festival 2025 draws 104,543 visitors, boosts eco-tourism
The five-day event drew plant enthusiasts and tourists from across Malaysia, Brunei, Kalimantan, and even Timor Leste.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, said the overwhelming response underscores Labuan's rising profile as a hub for eco-tourism and cultural events.
'The response was beyond our expectations. This shows how the Borneo Flora Festival has grown into a regional event of international interest,' she said during the closing ceremony.
The festival celebrated Borneo's rich biodiversity, featuring rare orchids, giant pitcher plants, and exotic rainforest blooms.
Over 100 exhibitors, including local growers, NGOs, and hoteliers, participated. Activities ranged from floral workshops to conservation-themed competitions, engaging visitors of all ages.
Dr Zaliha highlighted the festival's economic benefits, noting a surge in business for hotels, restaurants, and homestays.
'This festival has not only beautified Labuan with nature's finest but also stimulated our economy,' she said. Many homeowners even offered temporary homestays to meet accommodation demand.
Adding royal prestige, Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofia, the Queen of Malaysia, visited the event.
Organisers attributed the festival's success to strong grassroots support for conservation and plans are underway to expand next year's edition with greater cross-border participation. - Bernama

"This highlights Malaysia's active role in ensuring regional peace and stability,' he said in a statement on Saturday. Ahmad Zahid is in Singapore for a two-day working visit beginning Saturday and is scheduled to attend the Singapore National Day Parade this evening at the invitation of the Singapore Government. In the separate meetings, he conveyed his warmest congratulations to the Government and people of Singapore on the occasion of their 60th National Day celebrations. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said his meeting with Wong, who is also Finance Minister, focused on strengthening long-standing bilateral relations, including strategic projects that have the potential to boost foreign direct investment (FDI) and create more job opportunities in Malaysia. "We also discussed new areas of cooperation in tourism, TVET, and strengthening people-to-people ties as the foundation for long-term understanding,' he said. Both leaders also examined ways to share best practices in enhancing laws related to the gig economy, which has become one of the key sectors in both countries. Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia and Singapore are studying the matter from legal and policy perspectives to ensure industry players, especially gig workers, receive appropriate protection and have their welfare safeguarded. "In this context, I also shared Malaysia's initiatives in supporting gig workers through social protection and progressive policies, as part of efforts to build a competitive digital economy,' he said. Ahmad Zahid said that in his discussion with Gan, they agreed on the importance of fully harnessing ASEAN's large market potential to boost bilateral trade. "I also emphasised Malaysia's role as the region's leading halal hub, supported by halal industrial park infrastructure, world-class certification, and close regional trade cooperation,' he said. Gan, who is also Minister for Trade and Industry, informed that Singapore had sent TVET trainers to Malaysia, in line with the shared commitment to strengthen quality and empower the TVET ecosystem. New e-commerce law proposed by KPDN to regulate digital trade
KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has proposed drafting a new law specifically to regulate e-commerce. The aim is to ensure a more organised and effective digital trade ecosystem at the national level. Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh stated that the proposal is built on three key pillars. These include clearer industry responsibility, stronger enforcement, and comprehensive protection for consumers and small businesses. 'KPDN will ensure that the e-commerce ecosystem is not only innovative but also safe, transparent, and ethical,' she said. She emphasised the importance of cooperation from all stakeholders to achieve these goals. The ministry hopes constructive feedback from engagement sessions will refine the draft legislation before submission. Fuziah spoke to reporters after the second E-Commerce Legislative Review Engagement Session. The session involved industry representatives, digital platforms, merchant associations, and consumer protection groups. Legal experts, academics, and government agency officials also participated in the discussions. KPDN organised the session to address the need for updated e-commerce laws. Existing regulations must remain relevant in governing the fast-changing digital marketplace. 'These improvements are crucial to adapt to dynamic shifts in online business,' Fuziah added. She highlighted the growing role of e-commerce in Malaysia's digital economy. However, rapid growth has also led to risks like fraud and unsafe products. Cross-border enforcement challenges further complicate digital trade regulation. Fuziah noted findings from the E-Commerce Legal Review Study. PM Anwar open to new urgent projects in Kelantan despite RMK13 allocations
KOTA BHARU: The government remains open to reviewing new and urgent project proposals from Kelantan, even though major projects have already been allocated under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that project prioritisation was determined through direct engagement with the state government. 'We have presented RMK13, but new applications have been submitted, and if they are urgent, we will study them, especially flood mitigation, water supply, energy, and hardcore poverty eradication,' he said. He added that the national budget process would consider RMK13 while reviewing additional priorities. Anwar spoke at the closing ceremony of the Kelantan 2025 MADANI Rakyat Program at Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium. Present were Science Minister Chang Lih Kang, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Chief Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud. Anwar noted that engagement sessions have been streamlined to include state government input.
