Concerns after horses fall pulling carriage
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some Memphians are saying horse-drawn carriages and passengers in downtown Memphis should be banned.
For years, horse-drawn carriages transported passengers, many of whom were tourists, and have been a part of the downtown Memphis landscape.
On Thursday, the sight of what some thought were injured horses lying on the ground near a white carriage left some people disturbed.

One of them was Memphian Annalisa Kirchner, who reached out to Your News Leader to share her concerns.
'So, I was driving onto Mud Island taking the back way and saw a horse under a carriage laying down on the grass on the side of the road, people standing around it. It appeared to be sick or hurt,' said Annalisa Kirchner, a Memphis resident.
Some of the photos sent to WREG show carriage workers, witnesses, and first responders tending to the animals.

'There were a few people standing around and looked like the people who had been on the carriage and some people who stopped their cars to get out and help,' said Kirchner.
WREG learned the horses belong to Mark Bills, who owns Uptown Carriage Company. In a statement, Bills tells WREG what he says happened.
'We were testing a team of new horses to make sure they are safe for the public,' said Bills. 'But on the way to the barn, one of the horses stumble,d causing the other horse to fall.'

'Our team arrived on the site to transport the horses to the barn. Memphis Animal Services came by and inspected the horses,' said Bill. 'There was not even a scratch on the horses, and they are fine.'
On the website change.org, some are calling for a ban on horse-drawn carriages on Memphis streets, similar to what was done in cities such as Chicago, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, and others.
Kirchner said she and her friends signed the petition to see if they could make a change that way.

'This incident is extremely rare, and we've been in business for almost 30 years and like any industry you're going to have mishaps and at the end of the day the animals are safe,' said Bills.
Kirchner said that she is still troubled that Memphis is continuing carriage rides and that the horses are being treated so poorly.
WREG also reached out to the City of Memphis and Memphis Animal Services for an official comment but have yet to receive a response.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A day after a deadly multi-car crash, a witness told WREG that he tried to help victims. Memphis Police said that five vehicles were involved in the wreck on I-40 and N. Hollywood around 3:30 on Saturday afternoon. Officials said that while vehicle #1 was traveling westbound on I-40 W and struck the rear of vehicle #2, which was also traveling westbound on I-40. That caused vehicle #2 to strike the rear of vehicle #3 and vehicle #3 struck the rear of vehicle #4. Vehicle #4 then struck the rear trailer of vehicle #5. The wreck led to all westbound lanes of the interstate being shut down for hours. A WREG reporter spoke with a man who said he's an Army reservist and has trained for casualty situations. He described to WREG what happened next. 'I go to the driver's side and I'm able to pull the driver out and I unbuckle the passenger but by the time I get over there the car is already going up in flames and another bystander passes me a fire extinguisher and we try to use that to put the fire out but it's not enough,' he said. 'I just want to offer my condolences to the family, I feel really bad for the family and all the loss they're going through in such a short amount of time.' Police told us a fourth person was also hospitalized, but should be okay. WREG has reached out to investigators for more information about what happened. Data says there have been 17 homicides in Frayser this year
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The investigation into the death of a man outside a Frayser shopping center continues. Now, Memphis Police are asking for the public's help to bring the suspect to justice. 'It's getting worse. It's going to get worse,' a Frayser resident said. People working at the Frayser Village Shopping Center on Frayser Boulevard went about their Sunday morning as usual. However, some employees WREG spoke with said they are still processing the events that happened the day before. Memphis Police said a man was shot and killed. The brazen attack has customers and people living nearby talking. Those WREG spoke with did not want to go on camera for their own safety. Man killed in Frayser shooting 'I said, 'Did the security guard shoot him?' I thought maybe he was stealing,' a resident said. 'They said, 'No. It was another person who shot him.' And you know that's a norm out here.' Surveillance video viewed by WREG showed a man leaving a tobacco store. Suddenly, a man wearing a black hoodie and a ski mask appears, shoots the victim and runs off. Police said that the suspect fled in a silver late-model sedan. All of this took place in broad daylight while the parking lot was packed with unsuspecting shoppers. 'Don't nobody care who they shoot,' a resident said. 'They just shooting.' We spoke with a woman who works at a nearby business, who said she's still traumatized by the act of violence. She said she even tried to help the victim, but it was too late. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Man hospitalized after Frayser shooting This shooting comes after a violent start to the year in the Frayser community. According to the City of Memphis Safer Communities dashboard, there have been 248 aggravated assaults and 17 murders in the 38127 zip code this year. Just hours after the shopping center shooting, another man was shot in the 3700 block of Donna Drive, only two miles away. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and one person was detained. People WREG spoke with said they fear the violence is only going to get worse. 'You can't say more police because they're out here. They are out here,' a resident said. 'You see them all day long, but it's like they don't care about the police. They don't even care about going to jail.' Police said the Frayser Boulevard shooting is an ongoing investigation. If you have any information about either shooting, you are encouraged to contact Crimestoppers at 901-528-CASH. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Kroger addresses concerns about rodents in Midtown store
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Kroger says there is no rodent issue at its Union Avenue store, despite WREG showing the company a video of a mouse running down an aisle away from employees Wednesday morning. This comes two weeks after someone posted a video of a bread bag with holes in it, claiming the Midtown store was infested with mice and rats. Another person also posted a video of a mouse running across what looked like a store aisle. 'The video that you had from yesterday was taken to the pest control company, and the goal is to find out how that mouse got into the building and make sure it doesn't happen again,' said Associate Communications and Engagement Manager George Brown. Brown said as soon as Kroger saw the social media posts, they contacted a pest control company to investigate, and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture did not find any signs of rodents in the building. 'We really want to thank the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, which came out right away. They didn't find any rodent activity in any of the food areas, which was great because we could confidently serve our customers,' said Brown. The TDA told WREG its Food Safety office has not received any consumer complaints, but decided to inspect the store after also noticing the social media posts. During a May 14 visit, the TDA reported that no rodent activity was observed, but acknowledged that a store manager had previously reported seeing signs of rodent activity. Kroger said it has taken steps to protect the property from rats spotted outside near a former fast-food restaurant next door. The business has been closed for years, and it appears that homeless individuals have been staying there, leaving behind food and trash. Several rats were spotted in the shrubs surrounding the vacant property on Thursday. 'As you saw, that abandoned property is attracting rodents and other issues. We contacted the health department and reported that we want to protect our business, and we also want to protect the neighborhood, because if that building stays that way, the problem could get worse,' Brown said. Several rat traps have been placed around the former restaurant. Kroger has also placed traps around the back of its store. A spokesperson for the city stated that another company has purchased the restaurant property, but code enforcement is referring the matter to environmental court through the Neighborhood Preservation Act. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture said it will conduct a follow-up visit to the Kroger store within the next 30 days. Kroger said they always want customers to feel safe in their stores and know that the food they are getting is safe. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
