Clr Sizwe Mathebula brings community together for Mandela Day soccer tournament

The Citizen24-07-2025
Mgewana Sports Ground was buzzing with fun as the community, young and old, came together to celebrate Mandela Day in the name of sport.
On July 19, ward 17 councillor, Clr Sizwe Mathebula, hosted a soccer tournament at the sports ground to honour Nelson Mandela's legacy of unity.
'As we all know that the old man believed in sport, I decided to bring the community together to honour him through what he believed in,' he said.
Clr Mathebula added that they have also noticed that there is under development in the area and young people need to be assisted in terms of sports equipment and facilities, and that is why they are trying to assist.
Three teams that included the Ntaks FC, Mgewana FC, and Tiger Boys FC, participated, and though Ntaks FC was crowned the winner of the tournament, all three were given soccer kits, medals, and cups.
Bonginkosi Shabangu, Provincial executive member of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in Mpumalanga said, 'This tournament was hosted to ensure that young people interact in social cohesion and furthermore they must participate in sport activities.'
Regional chairperson of the ANCYL in Nkangala, Jafta Mosotho, stepped in and emphasised the importance of hosting such tournaments.
'We really thank the ward councillor who made sure that the tournament becomes a success. We must continue making sure that such programmes continue and that young people gather together and forge a way forward,' he said.
Clr Mathebula assured that the tournament was not an end but the beginning of many to come.
'We will continue to host such tournaments in honour of this gallant fighter,' he concluded.

Bobbies Rugby Club has become a beacon for young development

The Bobbies Rugby Club launched a junior team last year in response to the Springs community's call for an additional club catering to the underprivileged parts of town. Practice began on June 25, marking the start of a journey that proved they are more than just a rugby club; they're a home to many youngsters across Springs. Team manager Isabella Greyvenstein said, 'With no fields, no equipment and no funds, we were driven by passion and the desire to overcome and conquer, and to prove these young people's worth, not only to the opposition, but to themselves. Eventually, we beat the odds.' On July 13, 2024, the new players participated in their first league games. The U6 team won 15 out of 20 league games, lost four and drew one. Their performance brought their win rate to 75%. The U7 team won 10 matches, lost six and drew one, bringing their win rate to 59%. The U6 team was awarded overall best team, with the highest win rate among all senior and junior teams. By the end of 2024, the club had 19 players, and practice resumed on January 8. 'There are children less fortunate, children from the welfare system, and each has one common goal: to get on the rugby field, to matter, and to feel like they belong,' Greyvenstein said. She praised the coaches for their impact on the players, saying they had contributed to their skills development, fitness and emotional well-being. This year, for the first time, the club has an U10 team that will participate in the A League. 'We worked hard to recruit kids and are proud to say we have grown,' Greyvenstein said. Sprucing up the environment around Amanzimtoti Sports Centre

HARD work led to heaps of bags full of litter as the Amanzimtoti community came together on Mandela Day (July 18) to spruce up the Amanzimtoti Sports Centre, giving it a much-needed clean sweep ahead of Amanzimtoti Athletics Club's annual cross country league which took place on July 19. Also read: Sprawling community upliftment centre starts garden project A whopping 100 bags of litter were collected thanks to the collective efforts of hosts, Clean Surf Project, along with the Amanzimtoti Athletics Club, Sapphire Coast Tourism, Wakefields, CSW Educational South, Amanda Primary School, eThekwini Parks, Gardens and Recreation and dedicated community members. Participants rolled up their sleeves for a worthy cause and a cleaner environment. Romy Wenzel of the Clean Surf Project applauded the community's efforts. She explained that the area is in dire need of ongoing restoration. 'Trees and branches are wrapped in plastic with the entire river bed being choked by waste material, including napkins, car parts, glass bottles, household goods and more,' said Wenzel. This is an unfortunate result of recent flooding affecting the area. Wenzel explained that inappropriately discarded waste washes down and either makes its way to the ocean or gets trapped along the way, with Amanzimtoti river and iLanda Wilds being prime examples of this.
