Hong Kong to invest up to an additional HK$30 million into National Games team
Hong Kong is investing up to HK$30 million (US$3.8 million) more in its National Games team as the city goes all out to optimise every aspect and ensure the smooth running of eight locally hosted events, according to the sports commissioner. Commissioner for Sports George Tsoi Kin-pan said on Saturday that the Hong Kong venues designated for the National Games had completed test runs and were ready, with the countdown to the 15th edition of the Games in November under way. 'Work in the coming three months will focus on optimising every aspect to ensure the events will be held smoothly,' he added, referring to minor issues such as how to ensure athletes had the most convenient access back to locker rooms after finishing their warm-ups. The Games, which run from November 9 to 21, will feature more than 400 events across 34 sports staged in the Greater Bay Area, which comprises Hong Kong, Macau and nine Guangdong province cities. Hong Kong will host eight sports – fencing, men's under-22 basketball, track cycling, golf, men's handball, rugby sevens, triathlon and beach volleyball. Choi also revealed at the forum that the government would allocate HK$20 million to HK$30 million to support athletes' expenses during the Games, such as logistics and accommodation. This is in addition to the HK$15 million already budgeted for their preparation, including training.

How table tennis' former No 1 Zhu Yuling cherishes life more after comeback
Fresh from winning in Las Vegas last month, former women's table tennis world No 1 Zhu Yuling will return to action on Thursday in Sweden. Zhu, 30, will head to the World Table Tennis (WTT) Europe Smash on a high after WTT US Smash success in the gambling haven, which included victories over some of the game's biggest stars, including present No 1 Sun Yingsha. Since her international comeback following serious illness, at the WTT Champions event in Macau last September, Zhu's ranking has rocketed from No 164 to a recent high of No 6, and now No 7. It is not bad for someone who said she lacked professional-standard preparation and has described herself as a 'slasher' – no longer a full-time player but also a professor-slash-student-slash-businesswoman. Zhu Yuling's ranking rocketed from 164th to sixth after her comeback. It is some workload, but Zhu has found more time for training during the summer.

China v Canada water polo match in Brazil halted by gunfire, players take cover
Brazilian police have said there were no injuries after shots were fired near an under-20 World Cup women's water polo game between China and Canada in the city of Salvador. China won 12-8 on Sunday, the opening day of the tournament, but footage showed the game being briefly interrupted as players got out of the pool, lay down and took cover by a small barrier after hearing gunshots outside the water polo venue in the Pituba neighbourhood. China led Canada 3-2 at the time. 'The match stopped for about a minute. Our team saw that the police was taking care of it,' Marco Antonio Lemos, head of the Bahia state water sports federation, said in a statement on Monday local time. Police said the cause of the shots was a confrontation with an alleged local thief who was outside the venue and tried to escape. No more details were given. Spectators were told about the incident after the game had resumed. Brazil is hosting the 16-team tournament for the first time.
