All-rounder Ashraf leads Quetta to Pakistan Super League final
LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Quetta Gladiators made it to its first Pakistan Super League final in six years when it beat defending champion Islamabad United by 30 runs in qualifier 1 on Wednesday.
Pakistan's premier domestic T20 tournament was suspended for nine days due to tensions between India and Pakistan.
Quetta's only PSL title came in 2019 when it beat Peshawar Zalmi by eight wickets in the final.
All-rounder Faheem Ashraf was the star for Quetta as his rampant 45 off 23 balls propelled the former champion to 209-6 with Dinesh Chandimal also contributing a handy unbeaten 48 off 28 balls.
Ashraf and Chandimal countercharged with a 95-run partnership off 48 balls after Quetta ran into trouble at 113-5 in the 12th over as both batters smashed eight boundaries and six sixes in between them.
Ashraf (2-33) then struck immediately with the new ball when he bowled opening batter Alex Hales of England for a duck of his second ball and later also hit the top of James Neesham's off-stump as Islamabad got bowled out for 179 in 19.4 overs.
Opening batter Sahibzada Farhan top-scored with 52 — his fourth 50-plus score in the tournament — and Salman Ali Agha made 44 in an otherwise lackluster performance by Islamabad batters.
Off-spinner Usman Tariq picked up 3-32 while fast bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Wasim shared four wickets between them.
Karachi Kings will take on Lahore Qalandars in the eliminator on Thursday with the winner to face Islamabad in the qualifier 2 on Friday. The final will is Sunday.

Bermuda, Curaçao, Jamaica and Trinidad drawn into CONCACAF all-island World Cup qualifying group
MIAMI (AP) — Bermuda, Curaçao, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago were drawn into an all-island Group B on Thursday night for the third round of World Cup qualifying in North and Central America and the Caribbean. El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama and Suriname were put in Group A, and Costa Rica, Haiti, Honduras, and Nicaragua in Group C. A double round-robin will take place in September, October and November, and the three groups winners will qualify for the expanded 48-nation field next year. The region has a minimum six berths, with Canada, Mexico and the United States qualifying automatically as co-hosts. The top two second-place teams advance to six-team playoffs next March that include the No. 7 team from South America, No. 9 team from Asia, the No. 10 team from Africa and New Caledonia, which is the No. 2 team from Oceania. There will be semifinal single legs involving the four lowest-ranked playoff nations, with the winners advancing to single leg finals that will produce two qualifiers. Tigers lefty Skubal laments 2 walks in otherwise impressive 4-1 win over Orioles
BALTIMORE (AP) — Seven shutout innings. Only three hits allowed, along with two measly walks. Almost every pitcher in the big leagues would be delighted with those results. Not Detroit Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal, who wasn't fully satisfied with his performance in a 4-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night. 'I was kind of fighting myself early, and as the game wore on, I felt like I got better,' Skubal said. 'I'm probably more proud of grinding it out than when you're on early.' On a hot, humid night at Camden Yards, the 2024 AL Cy Young Award winner looked rather ordinary in the first inning. Baltimore's leadoff hitter, Jordan Westburg, whacked a drive to right that was caught by leaping Kerry Carpenter at the wall. Two batters later, Gunnar Henderson singled. Skubal then walked Coby Mayo in the second inning and Ramón Laureano in the seventh. The two free passes were the most he'd allowed since April 2. 'During my next bullpen,' Skubal said with a wry smile, 'I'll go work on my command.' When you're almost always sharp and that overpowering, it's difficult tough to cope when things don't go perfectly. Skubal (7-2) threw 98 pitches, 74 in the strike zone, but those 24 other pitches caught his attention. 'I just think my misses were kind of bigger than they usually are,' he said.
